Thoroughly explained and very easy to do once the proper tools are assembled. Pipe wrench is the key to getting the old cylinder out along with the WD-40. Thanks folks!

Great video. For those watching who are about to take on this job, pay close attention to the "longer is better" part for the pipe wrench. Also, make sue that you are using a PIPE WRENCH, otherwise you may not succeed. I repaired one chair about a month ago and was lucky enough to get the cylinder off using a 10 inch pipe wrench and a few minutes' worth of hammering on it. On a second chair which I did today I used the same 10 inch pipe wrench, hammered for a half hour trying to get the top end out and it never budged.I was on my way to Harbor Freight to spend 12 bucks for an 18" pipe wrench when I saw my neighbor outside - I asked if he had a big pipe wrench and he handed me an 18" one. The top of the cylinder was loose in 10 seconds. I then went to hammer the cylinder out of the base as shown. It wouldn't budge. I let it soak for a half hour with PB Blaster. No dice. I took the 18" pipe wrench to it - 5 seconds later it was out. Big pipe wrench is the key to removal. Thanks for the video!

beegee22 if you only had a 10 inch wrench you could have added a short length of scaffolding pipe to the wrench for extra leverage. I always have a 16 inch piece handy for said situations. hope this helps someone :-)

This video is old, but still the best and really only accurate video on the internet for this topic. The critical part of this is the order of operations. If you want life to not be a living hell, it's: 1)gasket off chair swivel base using wrench (still attached to chair) -> 2)sleeves/wheels off base (now unattached from base) -> 3)hammer off the piston. It doesn't work any other way unless you get lucky AF or are using a garbage, plastic chair. I know this because I spent 2 full days taking apart x2 DX Racer chairs when most videos showed it only taking 5 minutes a chair. I also tried using a rubber mallet on the piston, but it had no effect compared to a real hammer which did the job in seconds. If you don't care about the piston, I'd use a sledge hammer if you can figure out how to make it happen.

Thank you for this excellent video and the use of the wd40! I got an 18inch pipe wrench ('the bigger the better") and then I sprayed the wd40 - had to do it twice for my 4 year old chair - and it worked perfectly. I ended up just twirling the pipe wrench until I was able to remove the gas cylinder - since I lack the upper strength to really push on the wrench, but it was perfect! Thank you so much! I feel so grateful I found this. I followed exactly as you did, laid out newspapers, sprayed the wd40, laid the chair on the arm side, and placed the pipe wrench and turned! I was able to not only remove the gas cylinder, but I also was able to place a brand new seat on the old wheel base that is much lower to the ground I am 5 feet tall. I did the whole thing to try and shorten the new chair seat to the old low seat base and it worked perfectly! Thank you so much! Appreciate so much Sir!

Great advice on using the pipe wrench. I fixed my chair by adding a PVC piece and black duct tape to secure the collar in place. Took all of 10 minutes to fix what I'd been complaining about for six months. Thanks for the video!

Don - Thank you so much for your very informative & helpful instructions. I spent days in trying to remove the cylinder from the base of my chair - until I viewed your tutorial. Yes, the secret is to apply WD40 spray to the joint before using a Plumbers Pipe wrench. Again thank you with best regards from Peter (South Australia)

I DID IT !!!! Followed his video for using the pipe wrench. I squirted wd-40 on both spots nite before. then took the base off to get more leverage. squirted a bit more wd-40 on & after 30 min of working it > push / pull > hammered it more wd-40 it came off ! Keep in mind this chair is pushing 12 years old or better. hammered the base piece & on 4th hit it popped out. The video is awesome. When I called to order > Don was the person that answered ! Great video. Easy to follow instructions. 😀👍 TYVM Don !!

Hi, watched the video, something that had been difficult to attempt in the past was a simple 5 minute operation after watching this video! Most difficult bit was getting the gas lift loose from the chair base (easier with a longer pipe wrench I know - but made do with what I had). Thank you for such a simple but effective video! :)

Great video! For those who are trying to remove the cylinder with a pipe wrench, here is a tip (they also have warned this on their website): the wrench will permanently scar the cylinder so if you try to re-use the cylinder (like to swap it to another chair), be sure to twist the cylinder at where it is as close to the top as possible so the scar won't matter very much.

Eight years later, and this video definitely helped me out. So much better than the other tutorials out there. I found that since my cylinder was so stuck in the chair, I needed to actually whack the end of the pipe wrench with a rubber mallet to get it out, but this video (and another you made) helped me out a lot.

Thank you Don. To save a few dollars I bought a used chair with a working cylinder at a thrift store, I figured I'd remove the cylinder and use it for the office chair at my home. I was unable to remove the cylinder from the base on the used chair, so I put my chair seat on the new to me base - works like a charm. ALERT, this might not work for everyone,

Thank you. This was helpful. Following up on another viewers ad hoc advice below, after the WD-40, I took a 48 oz hammer (yes, overkill), tapping back and forth on the cylinder loosening it enough to then use channellocks. The hammer, the persuader as he called it, kept me from running to the hardware store for an extra-torque pipe wrench. Before watching your video, I watched another video, which was good as well, requiring removing the base. I preferred his method, because I didn't have a large pipe wrench. His approach went along very smoothly as directed, until I removed the base. (My chair happened to be configured differently than that presenter's chair, where the other end of the cylinder on my chair was shielded by a non-removable plate, keeping me from hammering out the end of the cylinder from the base).

This the best and most realistic video I have seen on replacing the gas cylinder on office chairs. it took me about 2 hours to get the cylinder out of the chair and get the black piece out of the leg base. The previous videos I saw mention tapping the leg base with a mallet as well as the seat base; however, it took alot of WD-40 soaking for about 15-20 minutes for both areas. I will probably be buying a new mallet in the future but the leg base finally came of even though all the wheels came off in the process. The trick to getting off the cylinder is definitely soak the mentioned area with WD-40 and place the chair on the floor and on it's side. I appreciate the presenter indicating that he had replaced cylinders on that particular chair a few times before so it was easier.

Thank you for making this video. I found it of great value in replacing the gas cylinder on my office chair. It was easy and simple. I used WD-40 Rust Release Penetrant Spray making easier to remove. A small tap with my 3 lb. Hammer (Persuader) quickly released the cylinder from the base. The chair is over 8 years old, encase someone might think it was a relatively new chair. And I weight over 240 lbs. Thank you again for putting this on KZfaq.

There seems to be a lot of these chair cylinder videos. This one seems well done. However, as a caution I will share my experience here as I have with some of the other videos: I just did my older high quality desk chair. It took 2 days. The bottom wheel carriage came off easily enough I guess, but then...... I soaked the part that goes to seat portion in Wd and PB Blaster, No Joy, and I have a large 18" pipe wrench. Tried it again after soaking overnight. No joy. I was putting so much force on it I was afraid I'd break the rest of the chair. I then removed the seat adjustment mechanism from the seat and put it in a large heavy vice so I could hold it in place better. No joy. Then I clamped the cylinder in the vice and tried a HF hydraulic spreader to try and pop it off while wailing on it first with a dead blow, then with a 4lb sledge, but no joy. I went back to the internet thinking maybe mine was bolted or welded on, but no. Finally, I took some of the more fragile parts off of the mechanism took it out side, placed a board on the ground and placed it on the board and then used the front end loader on my tractor to hold it down. I then put a 4' cheater pipe on the pipe wrench handle and gave it everything I had. Joy!!! My chair is now fixed and works great again. All you need is a tractor with a front end loader and a few thousand pounds of weight and 4' pipe wrench and 220lbs of fat man and it comes right off as easy as pie.

Thanks for this. Was able to fix up a Herman Miller chair where the gas lift had cracked. It was a lot of elbow grease to get it out of the chair end even with the right tools. Probably would have given up on it if I hadn't the confidence from this video that it was the correct approach. If anyone is thinking of trying with anything less than a pipe wrench I wouldn't advise it.

Ok, one commenter said he used pliers and could not get the part out; the response was a somewhat snappy "too bad you used pliers instead of the pipe wrench we showed you". A better response might have been that some cylinders are jammed in there tighter than others and you may have to really work to get them out. My chair had a part blocking the top of the cylinder so we could not tap it out from the top. We tried vise grips and hammer, a vise with pipe wrench, then extender, then sledge. We are builders so no strangers to getting difficult stuff done. We ended up cutting the cylinder off a couple of inches up (it was already punctured so no worries there), then cutting down into the center of the cylinder and the slot to get it out. Even freed from the pressure it had to be wrenched out. So, swivelchairparts, we appreciate the video, but maybe less snap, hmm?

Hi, I have an Effezeta Chair. I removed the cylinder from the seat leaving the cylinder still attached to the base. I have tried to remove it from the base with no success. It seems that the plastic tube is forged to the base. The auto repair shops in my area are reluctant to use a bearing press on it fearing it might break it. Do you know if the tube can be removed for this brand of chair called Effezeta? It's made in Italy.

If only it were that easy in real life. I used a pipe wrench and turned the chair on its side. Wrenched and wrenched and it never budged. It did however make some huge crush marks in the cylinder to the point where when i gave up and just lowered the chair back to a normal level, the crushed cylinder jammed from the pipe wrench making the chair completely useless. Now it doesn't adjust at all and the whole chair is going in the trash and i will have to buy a new chair.

Every video misses the most important item to make the removal very easy. Purchase PB Blaster. This spray will allow almost any tightly set items to literally fall off. Spray around both of the insertion locations of the pneumatic tube. Allow the PB Blaster to be absorbed for 10 minutes. Tap on the base of the chair and subsequently the top of the chair base with either a steel hammer or rubber malet. No need to utilize pipe wrenches.

Only when I finally got mine in, I had to do it without the outer washer! what is that washer for? seems ok, but should I wrestle with it again, should it fail in the future cause I couldn't put it together right? thanks Don.

If now there is no room for a washer, then don't concern yourself. Forget about it. Thanks for yur purchase. Don

swivelchairparts hey friend, great video, you might tell people that if they only have a short pipe wrench (like me I was at the back of the line when wrenches we given out lol), but seriously, take a strong piece of piping, shove over the end of the wrench, hey presto big wrench. I saw mechanics doing it years ago, it has worked for me every time. things pop off in seconds rather than many frustrating minutes if not hours!
