Thanks for making this video. After buying the chair parts, getting the cylinder from the base is the hardest part. Also, I soaked it with WD-40 for a few hours which really helped. I fixed my office chair in less than 10 minutes. No helper, just the old wooden stump outside, and a rubber mallet.

Finally! Someone who understands that I wanted to remove the base from the cylinder. Worked fast and was rather easy!

Thank you for sharing, the clylinder on my chair initially seemed to be badly stuck into the base, and I recalled using ball bearing exactractor from the old days for such situations, but luckly i saw this video, it was not as badly stuck as I thought and was able to hammer it out with rubber.

This is a video that there should never be a need for in a perfect world BUT I could not for the life of me figure out how to get it apart. Thank you 1000 times for this awesome video that saved my day!

Thanks for that. The central pillar on mine is nearly touching the floor dragging the carpet around. I didn't know it's a push fit, I couldn't tell from looking. I can remove it and put something in to raise it a bit now.

I never thought this kind of video existed (well, until my own chair was broken). I found out if can separate the seat from the leg structures, you can hammer away the cylinder by placing the 5-star base on your thighs. And if you don't have a mullet, place a piece of wood or old form 3 (9th grade in the US) math textbook on the cylinder and hammer away.

Thanks for the video, didn't have a mallet or a friend to help so made do with the end of a rubber weight and put the chair on its side but it worked.

I found a slightly different method to remove base that doesn't require a partner, I set the chair on its side so that I could push it with my legs as I hammer the cylinder, also I put a piece of cloth on the cylinder to protect from sparks / metal chips

For anyone who has issues where you CANNOT remove this part as I did, if you have a replacement base and lower part of the cylinder: Remove the tab and the washer from the bottom Let the base of the cylinder slide off Take your new parts(I gutted mine from an old sturdier chair, remembering that you need the star shape AND the lower part of the cylinder removed) (Also be careful, there are parts you don't want to lose inside and they may fall out) Put the base onto the desired chair, placing the washers back in their respective places, then sliding the tab back over. Upright your chair and voila, good as kind of new. I will say this isn't against this video, if he hadn't mentioned the base would slide off if you remove that tab, I would have never tried, so thanks mate!

I got the cylinder out of the column but the column is stuck. The column is even with the chair on bottom The cylinder is bad so upgrading chair parts to 500lbs. I have used rubber mallet, small and big hammer and 3-1 oil and hammered a lot but can't get it out. Any suggestions. I thought of replacing my wood banker chair base but can't find one. So I'm trying to avoid buying new wood banker chair.

Is there mallet free method to detach cylinder from the base?

If anyone has an issue with the cylinder being flush with the base, the remedy to this is to use a peg of some sort to use inbetween your hammer and the cylinder. I used a 1.5 inch x1.5 inch by 3 inch and it came right out after tapping it firmly. Good luck out there bros

my issue is my wheels dont turn well, so i dont know what to do, so i was thinking instead of buying a new chair just get a wheel base assembly? i.e. when i move in under the desk or away or want to move side ways the wheels scratch they just dont follow. my wife bought a cheaper chair and it works beautifully so my guess its the lousy wheels or the entire wheel base assembly ?

I have never seen a chair where the cylinder sticks out the bottom of the base. The chair I'm sitting in, as well as others I have, the end of the cylinder is flush with the bottom of the plastic, five-star base. I actually searched for a video like this because I want to remove the cylinder from such a base. I recently found a fancy computer chair in the trash (bulk trash, twice a year, the city hauls away almost anything you put on the curb), which was missing the base. It just had the metal rod sticking out. The chair is black and white, and I found a white plastic base, but without the cylinder. I then took a black base off another trash chair by removing the clip. So I have a white base without the cylinder and a black base WITH the cylinder. Now I'd like to transfer the cylinder to the white base, purely for looks. I suppose I can use a piece of wood on the bottom of the cylinder and beat that...

you mess up the mallet if you don't hit it square, just saying; wood may help

You can actually remove that clip at the top and pull it off very easily no hammer needed! Just make sure you do it carefully so you know how all the bushings and washers go back in.

I have thrown away some perfectly good chairs, all because they just needed a base replacement! Well, well!!
