DIY- How to: Remove + Install/Replace Water Pump and Alternator & AC Compressor Serpentine Belt on 2014 to 2020 Mazda 6, 3, CX-5 2.5L 4-cylinder engine
In this video I will show you how to change out two belts: water pump belt and serpentine belt. This repair applies to 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, which can be found in 2014 to 2020 Mazda 6, 3, CX-5.
You might have caught it in the video that the belt tension is leaky. This is a good time to check the belt tensioner as well. Look for signs of it leaking and once the serpentine belt is off, spin the pulley on it and see if you can hear the bearings, it should spin smoothly without making any sounds. If the shock is leaking or you can hear a rough sound, then it needs to be replaced. Here is a video that shows how to replace it:
• How to Remove + Instal...
While you have this area open, check out the water pump and see if it is showing any signs of leaking. See this video to see the early signs of water pump leaking and how to replace it.

I might have given a little too much detail, but I think having the extra details, would help someone who might get stuck on not understand how it exactly goes.
The passenger side of the car needs to be jacked up for this repair because you will be working in the area behind the wheel. Learn how to jack up the car and position jack stands under the vehicle to supported it safely in the following video.

Correction in the verbiage in video: • How to Remove + Instal...
-the most conservative crack count i found was "3 or more cracks with in a 3" section of the belt" not 1" section of the belt as stated in the video...is when the belt should be replaced.
-Also note, if the cracks are deep, then you should be replacing the belt.

I would like to add my thanks for your very helpful advice. My serpentine belt broke on my 2017 CX-5 at 63000 miles. I tried my best to use a 17mm combo wrench and it was hopeless. I invested in a 17mm offset and it was smooth sailing. Thanks again!

This is a really good descriptive and informative video. Thank you for uploading this Just an fyi I think you added a 1 to the end of the part number for the water pump belt in the description. I appreciate that you put all that info in the description too it nice to not have to hunt for part numbers too or other videos you referenced

This helped me immensely! It's good to note that turning the pulley with the wrench/socket set is probably the best thing you can do (if people weren't already doing that) The Water Pump pulley on the CX-5 is high behind a frame member, so be aware that it's not as easy as shown as the OP is on a different model. Not that it changes the procedure, but it's tricker to get your hand in there. Excellent Job!

I have 2016 Miata ND and did it from the top. Removed air box and got decent access. Tensioner hex was 18MM and crank shaft 21MM. At 61590 miles the serpentine belt had a crack but overall was in good shape. It could have gone more miles but once I had everything out to inspect it I just changed them both. I used Continental 4060374 and 4030330S replacement belts. Re-installing water pump belt was PIA - a midsize ratchet with flex head would have made the job easier. Stabilizer bar made job much harder. With water pump belt positioned on top of crank shaft (in groove) and bottom of water pump pulley I wedged my hand under coolant hose and just pushed to get tension belt seated. Serpentine belt was easy. Another example of why mechanics hate engineers :)

nice job and details! lol, i hear you. i know your comment is from a joking point of view. over the years i think i've come to understand this as....still can't explain all the things, but here is my thought: you have to remember that we all tend to view things from our own lenses and things aren't as clear as they are to us...as an engineer, there are a ton of things that even i wonder WTH! but in business, they apply the same item in multiple different makes, models, and years, so the surroundings change but the engine itself doesn't and so we find these weird fits and situations. there isn't any money for them to re-engineer items to make them better as they are don't with that phase and there must have been only a little bit of overlap to make sure things worked, but that is it....they don't see any more engineering giving them any more of a return on the car since it still sells for the same price, so they don't bother adding more cost into it....this results in all the frustration of those that work on the cars. since there isn't a feedback chain, things don't change either....the feedback chain that they have, don't and won't pick up on all the stuff that you and i see and do.

Thanks for posting this comment. I just lost my serpentine belt on my 2016nd at 150.000 km on a trip and ordered a new tensioner and both belts. I need to go back by bus and replace it. I can see that it's the same setup as on the 2.5L engine, though I will be able to do it from above with the hood open. Thanks for sharing. Wish me luck 🤞🏻😅

You can do from top down. Use half inch rachet with 17mm socket. Right arm to hold rachet while threading your left arm down side of engine. Be sure to place belt on crank first then holding tension thread under pully and around A/C. Then again...im 6'5" and got long arms. :)

I am trying to change just the serp belt, but the editing of this sub-video link that specified in text to click here to change the serp belt, has a lil other video info that i dont think helps me to do just the serp belt. From 5:25 to 7:25 and also from 8:30 to 10:45 is about the water pulley belt. Do i need to do any of that stuff in order to change my serp belt only? The editing confuses me if this sub-video is intended just for the serpentine belt. Can u fix or explain why i need to do it if not changing my water pulley belt?? Hello, while turning the crankcase the transmission is still in the the Park Section? and parking brakes on? thanks
@footprintsinconc
@footprintsinconc 5 ай бұрын
the car should turned off, your parking brake should be one if the rear tires are on the ground. you will then proceed to turn the crankcase...it has no effect on the transmission or the tires turning.. this is no different than , while in park with the parking brake on, you turn the ignition key or press the start button. the crankcase gets turned by a starter.

@footprintsinconc
@footprintsinconc Жыл бұрын
Honestly, it depends on the milage of the car. If you are over 150k, and doing the belts, then might as well do it. Otherwise check to see if the leak indicator hole is showing any signs of coolant leak...If it is, then you should change it regardless of the milage.

I don't know where you got that wrong info . But even if there's only one little crack on the belt. You have to replace the belt . I have 22 years experience. And if a belt is worn or cracked. You have to replace it . Unless you want next to cut off the alternator and overheat the engine. 🤦‍♂️

thanks for your comment. simply googling returns results like, they all have many years of experience as well...wide variety of opinions... www.cartalk.com: "Tiny cracks in a serpentine belt aren't necessarily bad, but the deep ones here mean it's running out of time..." www.aa1car.com: "...A good rule of thumb for older chloroprene-based serpentine belts (neoprene belts) is that if cracks are observed 3 mm (1/8 inch) apart all around the belt, the belt is reaching the end of its service life and should be changed..." www.colonyoneauto.com: "The general rule is if there are three or more cracks within a three-inch section of the belt, then your belt needs replacing." i was quoting the last quote as being the most conservative...so should have said "...with in a 3 inch section", not "1 inch section"...so i'm updating with this in my notes under description.
