In this quick video, I'll be showing you how extremely easy it is to remove the terrible weathering from the HASBRO PLASMA SERIES Ecto-1 toy with very basic household supplies.

It really is that straight forward, so if your Ecto-1 looks like it's been the victim of an arson attack, then this video is here to help you get things sorted to remove that awful paint application and make everything so much better.

Yeah, it does look better. I had to do this now because every time I caught sight of it, it just irked me. Thing is, now I can pack it away - though I should have done it weeks ago, but I've been busy.

I was lucky enough to have gotten the non burnt version originally. The tall striped part on the roof snapped, so I got another online, and used the parts. I plan on cleaning the burnt section, and repaint sections for more detail, and make it look like something in between the films.

Well good luck on your project! I've still not gotten around to adapting mine as that just fell by the way side, but I do want to add lights and weathering to it. One day...

I used to get Isopropyl Alcohol from Boots, the Chemists, for cleaning vinyl records with. I use unperfumed baby wipes now. A lot kinder to the plastic. The weathering as such as it is on that 'ECTO 1', was rubbish. It's not as if model weathering is a new thing. It's as if there is a paint station at Hasbro, where a worker has an airbrush full of a colour that I'll call 'Pigsty floor and shite', and that worker's instructions were: "Just slosh a load of it on the front. It'll do, and it's near enough. Don't think about the reality of it, or dirt you've actually seen: just slosh a load on it. The kids won't notice, or care." Glad you're rectifying this.
@PBProps
@PBProps 3 жыл бұрын
You're probably right, it's just a case of slosh it on and give it no thought. Oddly, it's only on a certain batch of these, so I guess it's what they've been told to do in one of the factories. As for the record cleaning, I used to use two slightly odd sounding ways of doing mine - I should make a video of this... if I can find any of my old records. Even then, there's no way that I'd be able to play them afterwards to show the efficacy of this as I haven't owned a record player for nearly 30 years now!

I just used alcohol Wipes isopropyl 70% used a couple to initially rub into the surface to soak a little then started using more wipes to slowly remove the dark areas probably takes just a bit longer because the wipes are not heavily saturated but it's non messy and as I didn't have any isopropyl already I thought I'd try the cheapest alternative and it worked but I only wanted to remove the dark area at the front and front sides the rest of the model didn't bother me

I used Tamyia's dry weathering kits to add mud and dust to resemble stills from the trailer and a very light application of Rub 'n Buff silver on the grill to add just enough faded chrome highlights.

@PBProps
@PBProps 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, just use whatever you had on hand. In the case of what I did, I just wanted to show that alcohol (hand sanitiser or otherwise - that most of us probably already have) could also do the job without you having to go out and buy anything special. But the toy does look much better without that paint job on the front.

I recently picked one of these up for myself with the intention of modding it to be the Ecto 1/1a hybrid I've always wanted to see, & I was wondering if you could recommend what I could use for the two different coloured hazard tape strips above the doors & along the side of the body? Would some reflective tape cut to measure & painted suffice or can you recommend something else?
@PBProps
@PBProps 2 жыл бұрын
There's a few ways that I can think to do this. If you can draw it up on your computer, you could always go down that route and print it up on to sticky backed vinyl... and if you're smart, I'd choose a yellow and an orange vinyl so that you're only printing the black stripes onto it. Alternatively, paint a yellow and orange stripe directly on to the toy, let that dry, then mask off the black striped bits and paint those on in black. I think either of these two ways would be ideal - the latter is probably the cheapest option and quite possibly the quickest too. Very best of luck with this!

Hello and thank you for the informative video. Quick question Would this prosses work on Matt paint ? I recently bought a Hasbro Black Series Boba Fett Helmet and for some reasons the lads at the factory went crazy with the weathering ( All Brown ) and it looks super cheap. Would this process be able to work on matt paint, or would it just remove the base coat I want to keep.
@PBProps
@PBProps 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. It all depends on the paint. As you know, the IPA removed the weathering on the Ecto-1, but not the horrible brown weathering on the Black Series snow speeder. For that, I used Xylene in the form of cellulose thinners. I would suggest that you try both on an inconspicuous area and see what happens. Go with IPA first.

Thank the maker someone did this! I was so disappointed with the stupid burnt look (spoilers anyone?). I was hoping you would have a go at the chromework on the front though, did that come up any, it's not clear to me in the vid.
@PBProps
@PBProps 3 жыл бұрын
It looks like the chrome work does have a thick pass of brown paint over the top, well - mine has. All the dirt and filth came off everywhere, including the grille, but there was that thicker brown under the "filth" in that area. That said, I noticed that the grille comes off if you unscrew the toy, so that means it'd be a quick fix with some paint and I do intend to do this when I get around to modifying mine completely.

What’s the alcohol liquid called the 90% and where did you get it from
@PBProps

99% IPA - you can get it at a chemists, eBay, Amazon - it's all over the internet and is very easy to find.
@MrVolvobloke
@MrVolvobloke 2 жыл бұрын
Well your 'burnt paint' came off a lot easier than mine did. 70% isopropyl hardly touched it, nor did white spirits and airbrush cleaner. In the end I ended up using a fine pan scourer and it still put up a fight.
@PBProps
@PBProps 2 жыл бұрын
Well, at least you removed it in the end. The hand sanitizer that I used was 70% IPA and took a bit more effort, but the 99% IPA from the large bottle just cut through it. It would appear that the paint is an acrylic base, so that would explain why your white spirits didn't touch it.

It makes a lot of sense when you want to remove the horrible rust effect paint application and replace it with your own - like I said in this video. There were two types of this release, one with terrible heavy weathering and one with decent weathering - this was the first type.

@@yournamehere6002 Not really - when the factory weathering is very poor and lets the side down on what is otherwise a very nice little toy. As I said elsewhere, there are two batches of weathering styles from two different factories - one being better than the other... This is the not very good version and so many people out there wanted to improve it.
