Sewer Camera Video: Sewer Camera - Tree Roots in Sewer - DIY Sewer Inspection Camera - rootx
• Sewer Camera - Tree Ro...
In this video I show how to remove tree roots from sewer line by showing how to unclog main drain line with a sewer snake yourself. A stopped up drain can be frustrating, especially when you have tree roots in your main line. The drain clogs can be an ongoing problem. To fix this problem you can rent a mechanical auger or drain snake to clear out the roots in your sewer line yourself. It is really affordable and not too hard for do it yourself-ers. To have a professional camera your line with an inspection camera is super expensive. I made a DIY sewer camera to confirm that I had tree roots in sewer line, so I knew exactly where the tree roots where. That made unclogging the main line and remove the roots a lot less overwhelming, as I knew exactly what the problem was and where. I was able to retrieve the tree roots from the sewer and cut the roots in the sewer with the root cutter or roto rooter (roto-rooter). I then could re run the sewer camera into my main sewer line to confirm the tree root removal from main sewer line. I could then see that most of the tree roots were gone with the help of the diy sewer camera. I also discuss some products used treat roots in sewer line such as copper sulfate, zep root kill, rock salts, and rootx (RootX root x rootX ROOTX). You can then later inspect your sewer line with the sewer camera after using the chemical treatment to kill tree roots.

Thanks for this. I'm real cautious of jobs because I live in a 100-year-old house and often a seemingly small project ends up being the end of the damn world. It still looks like an overwhelming job but you took the mystery out of it and it's something that I can do. I'll be on edge the entire time in fear I'll find out the entire sewer pipe to the road will have to be replaced for 5 million dollars. I think I'm going to get that beer . That will help me through this.

In an old home you probably have out of round, cracked and or broken clay tiles, so to use a cutter can cause unwanted damage to the tiles, in which case it’s better to use the hydro jet for cleaning and a chain for extracting the roots.

My house had this issue recently and good thing the HOA was responsible for the repair and not me. It was a $10,000 job. They tore up the front lawn and replaced a 3 foot section of the sewer line. Roots all in there, 7 feet down. I have the whole job on my security cameras. I'm gonna put the files together and make a video. I am so damn lucky the HOA paid for it. edit: Foam Root killer works. I used that before the service was done.

I guess I should have made a video of this, but I'll recite what I did for my daughter's house. She had a clog in her main line, 60 feet from the roof stack, and it was indeed roots. I knew she had clay pipe from when I was digging with a shovel to plant something for my wife... So, I measured down from the stack, came out to the back yard (where there had been a septic tank years ago) went around the house to the street, and stopped at 60 feet. I laid down a tarp and started digging. Don't hate on me, but it was Florida soil (no clay, no rocks). I came within 1 foot of the joint and indeed! there were roots. I bought a 2' section of PVC & two clay-to-PVC rubber couplers, used diamond blade on my angle grinder (Don't even THINK about using a metal blade on a SawZall. The clay will laugh at you.) Within 15 minutes, I had the 2' section of clay including the Clay joint cut out and the PVC with rubber couplers installed & tightened. All that was left was to fill/compact, fill/compact. The entire project cost less than $50 in parts and a few hours of my time. I have to say, that clay had been there for probably 50 years and looked brand new on the inside. It's a shame the joints leak as they do and attract roots.

@@thebumpchannel any time thanks for the content I was trying to remember how I fabricated one of these roto rooters once, as I spend a lot of time helping the elderly of my quickly aging community fix or repair anything and everything, as social security doesn't go far, and part of my legacy to the Mason Hall community is to help one another. If I fix miss Jackson's washing machine, that means another reprieve so she can stay in her home, and not end up in the nursing home. So what if the water shutoff valve costs me a few bucks. I tell her I had it in the bone yard at my house. And she thanks god for me and small miracles. I hope they do the same for me.

I just got through unclogging my main (lateral) sewer line & learned a lot. I learned how slow the machines are in extended & bringing back in the line & that in my case I needed to put the line in the inner of the 2 Wash Out 4" ports which stick up out of the ground at my home, each about 2 feet apart, the inner one is the one to use, as the outer one has too severe a bend to enter the lateral line to the street. In my case these 2 Wash Out Ports form a U shaped trap. Also you need a 5/8" minimum line (read the find print before you buy a cheap augur which can't handle roots). The machine I rented cost about $100 per day (I think they cost new over $2000). I will need to put special root poison after cutting the roots to prevent grow back. To get a 5/8 inch line machine, I had to rent one that also had 100 feet of line, which i don't like as I fear getting into the street's sewer & having my augur get stuck there. I tried to go cheap at first & use a Husky steel ribbon style "rod", but the plastic (for crying outloud) spear head would not penetrate the blockage.

I'm glad you explained this so well. I just bought an old house and it's been one plumbing problem after another. First the old gas hot water heater in the basement went kaput right as I moved in. So I replaced it and moved it upstairs because the basement apparently floods easily. Which it has now several times and I haven't even been here 2 months. Then I can't take a bath without the system backing up because the release of all the bath water at once is too much for the system. And the plumbing hasn't been vented properly either so the kitchen sink gurgles loudly every 30-60 minutes all day and night. So the last plumber said I had roots in the main line and to get some foaming root killer which I had never heard of before. So that is my next step. 😟

Just be aware that once a root bundle has become engaged in the spiral bit, running it in reverse, even just a few turns, can cause the bit to ‘unthread’ from the root knot, become disengaged from it, and fail to remove it. It would be like running a corkscrew well into a cork, then when resistance is encountered in removing it, simply because it is tight; then mistakenly thinking that the cork has somehow become physically “stuck“; reversing the direction of the corkscrew; (I. E. lefty-loosey) thus backing it out of the cork, leaving everything right where it was; except now with a damaged cork. Once the root ball is engaged, you may have to pull really hard to drag it out of there; in fact, you may even have to go back and re-engage it. In my view, running the coil in reverse is a last ditch procedure only resorted to when it appears that something is in fact stuck, like, maybe you have engaged a cluster of roots that just can’t be pulled out that way, and that it is time to get in there with the actual cutter, meanwhile, the only way to extract the cable and bit is to run it in reverse.… Just a thought.

Hey Bump thanks for this video. Your video is the best one I have come across as far as the details description and use for the attachments. Renting an auger is what I plan to do if I have more root problems. The plumber charged me 300 dollars last time to do exactly what you did. He of course didn't advise me of the preventative maintenance products available. I have recently started using copper sulfate but the foaming product makes a lot of sense so going to look for some of that. I used to have 8 large Maple trees in my yard. I cut down one so 7 to go. Thanks again buddy 👍.

Usually not cost effective to cut down those trees just for the sake of roots growing into the sewer line...that tree root base will still continue to grow for 10-15 years. $300 is generally a fair price for snaking a main sewer line. Annual maintenance for tree roots is also pretty typical.

Once you remove the root, what do you recommend doing to the spot where the root got in from? Would the sewer water start leaking into the ground through the root access point?
@thebumpchannel

Best to get a camera to assess how big the issue is. Depends on what kinda of pipe, damage etc. If its clay most times roots make their way in from the top of the pipe at bell and spigot joint. If structurally sound periodically treating for roots will keep them functioning.

Tree roots start getting into pipes due to water leaking out of the pipe slowly typically out of the joints.. For the longest time people thought that the tree roots just grew wherever and would dislodge the pipes which kind of happens but there has actually been research now and it shows that even a slight leak in a sewer pipe Attracts roots that's when the tree starts to send more growth to where the water is so yes you have a leak if you have ropes But it shouldn't be too much and so long as the pipe has not dislodged shifted or collapsed you should be fine

Nice vid. Could you comment on how frequently you insert the chemicals (foaming, copper sulphate or Zep root kill) and where you apply then from? Do you pour them down the drain hole, or holes, outside your house? Can you apply copper sulphate from bathroom toilet and flush it? Aka so that once or so a month as maintenance? Just wondering about more info on how you use the chemicals.
@thebumpchannel
@thebumpchannel 4 жыл бұрын
I treated with Root X after clearing the blockage. I use my access closest to the house and main line. If you don't have an access you want to use a toilet on lowest leevl closest to main sewer line. You should plan to apply RootX every 1-2 years as part of your regular sewer maintenance, per their recommendations. Zep root kill(copper sulphate) recommneds twice a year. Rock salt every 1-2 months.

@@thebumpchannel When you have a septic system, you have to be concerned about chemicals killing the microbes in the tank which break down the sewage, after which solids can find their way to the drainfields and create a far costlier scenario to repair. When it's a municipal drain, you can send the problems to the local sewer authority and to the communities downriver.

I can't believe tree roots would be attracted to leaking pipes?!? Well actually the surprise is how folks think cutting tree down will fix their pipes problem, doh! You did say this was a temporary option until actually fixing pipe, that puts you way way ahead of the other professionals. As an arborist I really appreciate you mentioning that in video. Regarding another situation. Tree roots are supposed to lift sidewalks anytime anyone intentionally mechanically compacts grade directly under cement slabs. Thus preventing tree roots from going any deeper, but instead growing directly on top of grounds surface. Even inviting roots up against bottom of slabs created by temperature difference and shade producing perfect moist conditions. In fact EVERY Time one witnesses tree roots growing directly on top of ground, situation simply results from total lack of oxygen underground. Never because tree was not planted deep enough, as roots always seek out their own optimal ground level. Or assuming tree species evolved to grow in wetland conditions. And extending tree root crossing over compacted ground looking for better growing conditions elsewhere. (The smaller the parkway strip Green space to grow in, the more important tree roots need to grow into someone's front yard once reaching other side of sidewalk.) Thus species like maple are scientifically just more sensitive to lack of oxygen and poor soil conditions. And same time will definitely grow deeper where leaking pipes running deep underground are producing optimal growing conditions. How could we falt trees for just doing something we unknowingly invited them to do? Crazy but true. Certainly does not help that similarly just like wood produced along extending tree limbs, top portions of roots put on thicker wood. Next time you cut a limb off a tree, check out difference in growth rings comparing top to bottom thickness. Next time when severing large root back from running underneath lifted sidewalk. Intentionally loosen up just a strip of compacted grade running from one side of sidewalk to other. Then allowing regrowth to extend deeper just like trees had evolvd to commonly do. This is why underground sidewalk piers as spaced-out foundations may be one of the best future solutions. That's If ever-changing Ada handicap sidewalk requirements does not end up banning parkway tree plantings permanently all together. Only resulting from folks failing to do research into reasons why these situations actually happen. Yeah coming back every 10 years to re-cut Roots back and repour new sidewalk is not like good job security, NOT. Instead of interested in discovering permanent answers for customers who may not want to lose tree or worse having fall over in a windstorm and then blame tree again. (If money grew on trees like leaves, money would be worthless) Worst compacted ground conditions usually around schools where kids are always playing at the base of trees. Even when walking dirt path through a forest. Notice how hardly anything grows, especially grass. It's not that tree species produces poison that kills grass. In fact you will see tripping tree roots crossing on top of ground from one side of path to other. Don't expect winter freeze to loosen up compacted grade anywhere past an inch or two deeper. Two hundred years later, settlers wagon wheel ruts are still compacted. And while deep aeration might temporarily solve problem, such loosen soil is more prone to recompaction. Just a light 2 inch layer of wood chips can cushion foot and vehicle traffic from re compacting grade.

You just go slow at start and work it in correct direction. Also can adjust orientation of the auger to help. The curve or coil of the snake will cause it to favor one direction or the other, so may have to adjust as needed. It isn't very difficult but obviously could be more tricky with a fully backed up cleanout where you can't see. Obviously you would want to know which direction pipe runs, and which was you want snake to go.

@thebumpchannel

It would depends on the damage to the pipes. Most common issue with clay pipes is root intrusion around the bell and spigot joint. If you are not able to controls roots with thorough mechanical removal of roots and regular maintenance using chemicals, repairing would be next step. As with anything I would look for second opinions and have the line scoped with a camera to see extent of damage and condition of pipes.

I used salt monthly for past 2 years and didn't seem to work. You can see what I am referring to in this video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/osB5nM5o26u0gqs.html Roots usually grow from the top, so pipe is nearly clogged and roots are mature before it would even have a chance to work. I have a 200 ft pipe so keeping the salt solution where you need it is tricky. I would just use RootX yearly if I were you. 2lbs would treat your length. See here: amzn.to/3y9ucj1
