Video: How to unclog tree roots in sewer yourself with drain auger
• How to Remove Tree Roo...
Sewer camera inspection is very expensive to have done, and to buy a sewer camera is even more expensive. In this video I show how to make a diy sewer camera to inspect tree roots in a sewer. The sewer camera is made from a wireless endoscope which is waterproof, which makes it perfect for the diy sewer camera. The sewer inspection camera connects wirelessly to a cell phone, so your cell phone is the viewer for the sewer camera. The sewer camera is attached to a drain auger or drain snake, via electrical tape to make the sewer camera easier to snake in to your sewer line. I use this sewer camera before clearing tree roots from my main sewer line, then inspect the main line again with the sewer camera after snaking the line for tree root. I also discuss some products used treat roots in sewer line such as copper sulfate, zep root kill, rock salts, and rootx (RootX root x rootX ROOTX). You can then later inspect your sewer line with the sewer camera after using the chemical treatment to kill tree roots.

Thank you for this video! I built this sewer camera and it worked great. We also used your video about using a rented "roto-rootor" and completely fixed our drain woes. We owe you big time! I modified my camera in two ways from yours: I used the center part of a plastic hose slice for garden hose to surround my camera and centered it with a small piece of foam weatherstripping. I also cut the bulb head off the snake drain and attached it behind the camera head. It worked great, and was almost half the price of renting for a day. After I was done and had cleaned the length of it of sewage I wiped it down with argan oil to stop the rust of the drain snake. Argan oil won't break down the plastic camera line like a petroleum oil would. Thanks again! I would give you a hundred likes if I could.

I have the same 33’ camera. The DEPSTECH-View, which I call the “dipstick”. As semi rigid as the cord is, it’s hard to feed it into anything, let alone a sewer line, more than a few feet. Attaching it to a snake is an excellent idea, and I did just that. I put the camera about an inch and half back from the auger end, that way the auger usually hits things first, and having a couple of inches of flexible snake out front seems to help it go around corners. These inexpensive endoscopes are not as good a real sewer cameras, but if you can get the job done a couple of times a year with low cost DIY tools, you’re doing good.

I think your idea of attaching endoscope to small manual snake is good idea for small pipes inside the house, but for outside main sewer line, I recommend any of the cheap sewer inspection camera. Actually I have two such camera. One 300 feet and another one 100 feet. Both work incredibly well, and it can go out to advertised length in 4 inch main sewer line. Much easier to use than trying to shoe horn an endoscope camera for this purpose. Not very expensive, from $200 and up to $500. These sewer camera saved me from calling plumbers when there was difficult clog issue in main sewer line. Paid for itself on first use, so well worth it. Only thing you have to watch out for is not to attach the wheel add on to the camera as that can get camera stuck inside the sewer. Also be careful with that fiberglass camera cable as it can snap if you bend it too much.

I got a similar camera, but I have put the camera ahead of the snake's bulb. I've also build a 'roll cage' around the camera - essentially, taped a piece of wire that makes a loop in front of the camera, then taped another one 90 degrees off. The two loops crossed slightly off center so not to block the LEDs and the view. Think of a camera sitting in an egg beater. This allowed for two things: keep the sludge off the camera and keep the camera more or less centered in the pipe. That way, you get to look at the whole pipe and not just the one of the walls.
@thebumpchannel

Great idea. Yeah I would have to rotate a bit to see whole pipe clearly. I have seen where others use a wiffle ball to keep centered but I was afraid to introduce anything that might be more prone to getting caught up. Thx for watching and thx for the comment!

Great video, you Covered everything perfectly. I'm a huge diy for same reasons, feels like they do the least amount of work possible & there's always 1 or 2 guys just standing around that I'm paying for ( noone is that darn cute) so here I am 6 months later after a plumber came out & charged me out the Ying yang to clean roots out of my main, they took my tolit off & left it on my bathroom floor, took me the rest of the day to clean up wax ring, gunk, sewage..I replaced the tolit & the new waxring that I had gave to the techs they were from the Top Rated Plumbers in my area 👀. Basically they just ran a snake through (which I already had done myself & believe.I had knocked a hole which they then made a little larger) enough to drain until now. I thought they were just making a fail attempt to be comical as they left when they said "Just don't flush Tolit paper. Apparently they feel it's the norm for ppl to put used tolit paper in a waste basket. I refuse to call Jack & Leg back out even though I'm still under warranty for a 6 more month. I paid $375 for 20 minutes of actual work most of which was tearing my BR up. So thank you for an A-Z video on how to remove tree roots from main.

I recently hired a guy to come and snake out my sewer drain, and he brought a 50 foot drain auger. He probably got 40 feet down into the line nad got a chunk of root fibers out. He also said that I should call the city utilities because they would clean it out from the other side. (I knew this was not true, because I had done my homework) The city crew came and did a courtesy clean-out of the street line, and told the guy that city policy for plumbers required that when they use a snake, that they clean it all the way to the main line. Otherwise, he probably just pushed the blockage further down. He started to pack up and once he got paid, he split. The city crew guy told me that I would likely be having the same problem in a few hours, which of course, he was spot on. I called a different plumber in my neighborhood and asked about the sewer cam, and they charged $650! This is just the kind of thing I need! Great video! Thank you!

Hello, thanks for the great video. I was going to try your method with Rootx in two weeks' time but was also considering digging down to the location of the roots/the pipe, as I've got a general idea where it might be located. Would it be worth doing this to stop the roots from surrounding the pipe externally? I don't mind the extra work, but if you think a 'Rootx only' approach is effective enough I'll go with that. Thanks for your excellent help already!

Wonder how often you do this to keep your drain clear, how often you use Root-X (toxic?) and whether you considered excavation and repair? Good DIY info, thanks. What do you think of using heavier guage clear plastic tubing to facilitate disinfection after use? I quarantine and disinfect all snakes and toilet plungers after use, and use a separate plunger for sink, tub and shower. Neighbor had squirrels blocking drain/stack by storing nuts back in house, so your tool has many uses inside too. Will consider 50 ft camera option. Thanks again.

Rootx is supposed to kill on contact (1HR), but will take time for roots to decay. If you have a complete blockage you will want to remove as much of root mass as possible via mechanical cutting, and use rootx at same time. Roots will still need to decay before they are completely gone, which time will vary on. rootx.com/municipalities/rootxperts/faqs

Should just jet the line out with a trailer jet that would remove the roots entirely for a decent amount of time. Unfortunately due the fact you have clay tile pipe that will allow the roots to continue penetrating the pipe because they will obviously continue to grow. Root x and root killer does work but water travels on the bottom of the pipe where as the roots grow in the top generally so you honestly only buying yourself some time till it does have to be professionally cleaned out or if you can rent a machine that you can put 4" blades on that would better suit the size of your main line sewer pipe.... but all in all back to what I mentioned about jetting.... just easier to jet those lines out when there heavily rooted like that

Not in side of pipe that is holding water. The water would normally be too cloudy to see anything clearly. You could use on the backside of a clog ( the side with no water) if you happen to have multiple clean outs. I was able to do this but I have multiple clean outs and clog was between two of them. But most people just have one clean out.

I have a question. How do you actually locate where the head is from the surface. Are there any cheap ones on Amazon that can achieve that goal? thanks!
@thebumpchannel
@thebumpchannel 3 жыл бұрын
I marked the cable on mine with red fingernail polish (you can see in video thumbnail image), when the head is at the blockage. Then pull the cable out and you can measure the length of cable (for me I think it was 13ft or so). Then you can measure down to get your pipe depth through access (3ft or so in my case) then in the direction of the pipe run. This should get you a pretty close estimation of problem location. So in my case the cable went 3ft down and 10ft out roughly, and you should easily be able to tell the direction the pipe runs. Not sure there are any that include locator feature for cheap.

Might need to call a pro or rent one. Not sure you can make a DIY version that will work well at that length.

How did you find feeding the camera into the pipe? I just bought one of these cameras, about 15ft worth and noticing that it is hard to feed down your pipe without it eventually just pointing towards the wall of the pipe and you cannot actually get a good view of the pipe from ideally a centralised point looking downstream. I need to attach the camera line to something more rigid so it will hold a straight line as i feed it down.
@thebumpchannel
@thebumpchannel 4 жыл бұрын
That is why I attached it to the drain auger. To give it more rigidity. Others have recommended attaching it to pex or a fish tape.

tried doing it with fish tape but it binds in the pipe. I have an iron mainline with a PVC fitting(installed later), a new clean out pipe that goes vertical into the back yard. I payed $1500 big oens for that clean out and installation! it lies behind my home directly north of my main bathroom's toilet. that is about 25-30 feet away and I am wanting to Y turn to my master half bathroom toilet. The line goes in and then a screw ring collar that blocks it mostly.-the way a PVC is fitted onto an old 1970s iron pipe. I did get past the ring collar but the fish line still gets bound up. I use Ninja 50Foot 6mm wide tape. a hard wired camera and LCD.Oiiwick 50 foot endoscope.I don't like iphone apps and hackers that hang out with them. my under home main line is covered in gunk so the cammy got blurred after a few feet in past the retainer collar. the turn is 90 degrees and the collar is maybe a foot from that. then the PVC turns to iron rusted calcified pipe. looks as bad as a colon in there but I can't see far enough to get to the problem as it won't go farther than maybe 8-10 feet from the turn. I do not recommend fish tape. it binds up and is not rigid enough though I maybe using the wrong leader.-the only one I got was the eye and a looped cable. I used the eye.

I know youre not a plumber but why do plumbers use the outside sewer line for scoping like you did here instead of an inside drain? It seems like if you want to learn about the conditions of home sewer pipes you start in the home and work your way out to the mains.

I think most of the time they first check the clean out. If it is holding water you know the issue is downstream not upstream. Roots are likely the most common issue I would guess.
@Mixwell1983
@Mixwell1983 3 жыл бұрын
Well if more than one inside line is backed up you already have an idea its a main line but generally for me my upstairs shower and sink back up and everything else is ok. I know its my gfs hair because I have to do this every 6 months. It clogs where the shower and sink connect and run down to the 1st story. If you cant isolate it to say the bathroom or kitchen and its both then you have a main line clog.. Just process of elimination.
