This is my 4th year living in the Dominican Republic and my 2nd apartment. I had no idea what to expect when I moved to San Pedro de Macoris in 2020, but I learned along the way. I was able to get an apartment with just a passport the first time and a letter from my employer the second time. There were a few delays along the way, but it was a fairly simple process for the most part.
Here is what to expect when renting an apartment as a foreigner in the Dominican Republic!

HI Kayla. Gone gif you and everybody a very usefull tip... If you rent a house or an apartment in the DR do check in advance before you seign the contract that it does NOT HAVE a clause / a paragraph mentioning that they're going to raise the rent anually with ten (10) procent... a practise that is used frequently but is NOT legally obligated... so depends totally on the goodwill of the landlord and/or the lawyer. Personally I refuse to accept that line in my renting contract for obvious reasons you mentioned... I don't want to relocate every two or three years because the rent is becoming unaffordable. Not every landlord or lawyer is putting the anual raise of 10% in their contacts neither... and if they do and don't want to get it out of the contract I look for another house or apartment. My rent is 14000 pesos for a solitary house on a plot of 600 m2 and is not anually going up... that way you have at least some years of stability in the same place. Greetings from La Caleta - Boca Chica

That's a good deal for a house! And that's so helpful to know for the future. I didn't know some landlords do that...

They raise because they want's more money for no reasons, the concept of economy and market strategy is very far from the Dominicans. If I have a person who pays punctually, then they should appreciate that and readjust the rent every five years instead.

I do understand the desire to want more money. But at the same time, I see many apartment owners lose good renters because they move to avoid paying more. We hope to buy a house one day and avoid this altogether. For now we will just keep moving 😅

We had to drive around and look ourselves. Most apartments here are listed for rent in a sign in the window. Facebook marketplace has a lot of apartments but I have never heard of anyone getting a reply.

Is it realistic for a single person to live on a 1000.00 dollar budget in santo domingo?

@@MrJoseTiger We live in San Pedro de Macoris which is cheaper than Santo Domingo. It depends how you want to live and what you want to buy. If you want to get air conditioning, to eat out at restaurants, to go on trips to other cities, and buy a car then you may need more than $1000 a month. But here are our monthly expenses: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y5iieZScm6yrj40.htmlsi=RktVC2NK3m3OpRgV

@@MrJoseTiger If you have to rent this is only OK to SURVIVE not to live... In my opinion and my experience I live next to Santo Domingo close to the airport, you need minimum 1500 US$ to have some life... and this is not for living in a big city.

Hello, good afternoon. I have a question, what kind of job do you have in the Dominican Republic, what do you do there and how much do you earn?

Hello! I teach at a bilingual high school here and that just covers the cost of living. I also tutor math online through the state of Florida and that's $15 an hour.
