DIY-How to Repair a Door Latch Cable on a Honda Accord / Civic
Is the door no longer opening from inside and only opens from outside?
In this video, I show how to repair the door latch cable INSTEAD of removing and replacing the door latch cable. This repair was done for the passenger rear door for a 2005 Accord. A similar approach can be applied to any car.
The other end of the cable is connected inside the door lock mechanism assembly. Some people are not able to remove the screws for that assembly, they are on tight. If you don’t use the right head that seats fully in the screws, you will strip them, and they will need to be drilled out if they need to be removed.

I used heat shrink tubing over the piece that broke. When and if it stops working, I'll probably use your method. My piece is smaller and white.

DUDE! You are a genius! I know this is a very obscure specialty topic, but I wanted you to know that it was exactly what I needed. This is the 2nd time I have had to deal with a broken door latch cable on a 2005 Accord. The first time, I bought the replacement part and went through the very difficult (for me) installation, got something wrong, and wound up having to pay a dealer to fix my mistake. This time, I found your video, and thought your solution was perfect. In about an hour, I made a perfect replica of your repair bracket out of parts I already had in the garage, and reassembled the door with its newly working inner handle. Thank you thank you for your clever idea, and for making this video. It may not have millions of views, but finding it was a great help for me. Keep up the good ideas!

Thanks! Used this to fix the door not opening from the inside. Great explanation on how it works. Though I ended up using two layers of heat shrink tubing instead to hold the broken pieces together. Didn't have a grinder or spare elbow piece. So far so good!

This is a great video for explaining what causes the door latch to stop working and how to fix it. As a result of watching this video, I found a way to use a zip tie to fix the issue. Not sure how long it will last, but here's what I did: After removing the door panel, I removed the door latch compartment (the section with the door latch, that is clipped to the door panel), and removed the small screw that holds the metal cable bracket in place (this is the screw that he had to file down for his fix to fit in the video). I placed a very small zip tie across the back of the metal bracket so that the ends of the zip tie are sticking out on both sides of the bracket, and then screwed the bracket back in place. The bracket has a little indentation on each side, which is perfect for accommodating the two ends of the zip tie. I re-attached the door latch compartment, reconnected the end of the latch cable, pushed the broken green cable clip into the curved catch in the metal cable bracket, and then tightened the zip tie around the cable clip, holding it in place. It works, at least for now...

Awww yes!!! Man you are awesome and a blessing!!! Once I found the broken cable (green tab) on my car, I was racking my brain and walking around home depot looking for an idea or part to achieve this fix. I decided to look at youtube for a suggestion and found your video. I completed the exact fix for all four doors within an hour because I have all the parts laying around. I urge you to submit this fix to Honda for a engineering change because I went to the salvage yard to see if I could find a cable , and they were all broken in the same location. I think the cable was made so owners would have to return to dealership for an expensive repair. Again Thank you and keep up the good work

gr8 video ! this gave me confidence to attempt this myself instead paying $$ to a mechanic. Ended up looking for a simpler way though not as robust as this. I figured since the cable comes off the latch because the green plastic no longer stays in place since its broken , if i could hold it in the slot it should work. I drilled a small hole in the bottom and top plastic and inserted a stiff wire to keep it in. so far so good ! thanks again. And thanks to you tube !

Nice job but I'm glad I came across it too late!! After ordering new cables and only getting the passenger side rear, I was thinking about any kind of repair adhesive or even tape that I could use while waiting for my driver door cable to get here. About 4 AM I had a bright idea!! Use a piece of shrink wrap tubing that will fit over the green part of the cable shield, shrink it around the green part and put the door back together!! Not sure how long this will last but works like new for now.

Many thanks for this video. This idea saved me a ton of time (and a ton of chances to break other plastic components)! I used a different kind of metal bracket that already had holes, and it's working! Thanks for the detailed explanation and the idea!

Thank you very much for posting this!... I (like you) was going to do the same thing [in a slightly different way but this solved the "engineering time" for me, so I just copied it (which is the best form of flattery!) I had to do 2 doors, and I had done one of these before and it was a nightmare with the new cable and taking of the J3 screws for the lock etc. Both doors are working wonderfully!

Dude. My fix was easier and took 1 minute. Basically i placed the Brocken cable back inside the u shape plate. And i nudged a perfectly flat metal piece after to hold it in place. Works. I used a portrait hanger metal piece. Just size the dimension you need and bent it back and forth till it snaps.

The new metal jig is to hod the two green plastic pieces togather tight The green plastic is being held in place by friction as it was held in place originally. It won't fall out. When you put the panel back in its place, there is no room for it to fall out anyways.

the door unlocks? i assume that is working fine. if that wire is broken at the inside door handle, the outside door handle should work, it's a separate cable for that.... i would start by removing the inside handle, and manually pull on the cable to release the door. then take the inside panel off and see why the outside handle is not working either. hope this help. let me know.
