You're extremely welcome. I'm happy this video was able to help someone out. I can't afford a new canoe, and got this old one really cheap. It had a lot fiberglass rot, and would have just kept cracking. So I figured best to remove the larger sections. It's not the prettiest canoe on the water, but it's very strong, and it don't leak. Good luck on your fix.

No problem 👍 glad this video helped you out. Only thing I can add, is that it's not necessary to use as much hardener as I did in the video, I was under a tight time frame, and needed it to harden as fast as possible. So just use the recommended amount in the instructions that come with the resin for best results.

I feel ya. I took and formed a stiff pile to the bottom of the inside to stiffen up the keel and fiberglassed it in which fixed the flexing issue with my canoe. The other positive for doing that is if I hit a rock and it knocks out a big chunk there’s enough fiberglass and material there where it won’t cause a leak. Nice work on the patch tho. 👍

Biggest lesson learned after starting some fiberglassing last night, was how important it is to mix the hardener and resin well. In the same batch, I had some spots set up better than others. I suspect where it stayed tacky, I was pulling from the edges of the square container that were not well mixed. Live and learn. Round container, and mix well. Next time!
@3ToeCustoms
@3ToeCustoms 4 жыл бұрын
yes. deff important to mix well, and not use to much hardener. i find that certain brands clump up easier than others as well. also, dab a bit more than brush. i found a cheap 20$ set of fiberglassing tools really came in handy as well.

@3ToeCustoms
@3ToeCustoms 3 жыл бұрын
i purchased a fiberglass tool kit from Amazon. it comes with a few different metal rollers that really comes in handy to get all the air out between layers, and working larger projects. the plastic cling wrap makes separating the fiberglass from a mold easy, or in this case a backing that is removeable for a double sided job. i found fiberglass tricky to work with at first, but after some practice, and research. i find it's an awesome product to work with, and the possibilities are endless.

@dewith669
@dewith669 3 жыл бұрын
Also for your paint roller, are you using a specific roller or just the metal part?
@3ToeCustoms
@3ToeCustoms 3 жыл бұрын
what i'm adding to the resin a hardener so that it activates the resin. without it the resin won't get hard. depending on the fiberglass resin you buy it usually comes with a small tube of activator. Bondo is a brand that's quite popular, and you can buy the activator separate. you only use a few drops, and mix it well. if you add to much hardener it will set to fast depending on the temperature you're working in. if it's colder outside i like to use a few extra drops of hardener, but if it's hot out the resin will set faster. the roller i'm using is a purpose made tool for laying fiberglass, and it to remove any air between the layers. you can find affordable kits on amazon by simply searching fiberglass tools. it usually comes with 3 different rollers. you will need acetone to keep them clean after each use as well. fiberglass can feel overwhelming to work with at first, but once you get used to it, you can do so many things with it. get a box of rubber gloves, and change them often as it's hard to handle the fibered glass with sticky gloves.

Anybody ever try using long strand autobody fiberglass in plase of the resin? I have the cloth just no resin...
@3ToeCustoms
@3ToeCustoms 3 жыл бұрын
the filler won't absorb into the matting, so would be better off just trying to use the filler. that type of filler is strong stuff, but also brittle. the filler would prob work on the short term, but beware that it will prob crack, or break off if impacted on rocks. it's not really something i would use to try, and repair this type of damage.

thx for the tip. I use different techniques depending on what I'm doing, and material I use. this stuff sets fast, and globs up. so you don't have a lot of time to sit there, and dab it. after I'm done rolling it, the cloth's plenty saturated.

I wouldn’t follow this video. He does things you shouldn’t do. Will it hold, probably. Doing it correctly it’s stronger. Extra hardener makes the resin brittle and prone to cracks. One layer at a time. It doesn’t take that much extra time doing it right.
@3ToeCustoms
@3ToeCustoms Жыл бұрын
I did it my way, as I felt like doing it at the time, and it's been 4 years with no issues, so it's effective, and works. I used extra hardener because I needed it to harden faster, as I was limited on time, and during the time of year I was doing it, the weather, and brand resin was making it take longer to harden than I had. So I used my better judgement, and it payed off. Thanks for the comment though, gets me more views.

@@3ToeCustoms I’m glad it held. I did say it would probably hold. However, it’s always better if people know because if someone used that technique somewhere it did matter they could have problems. FYI, commenting is the best part of KZfaq.
