Lawn mowers starter rope always seems to break at the worst time. In this video I will show you how to rewind and repair a broken starter assembly on a Briggs and Stratton Platinum 7.25 hp lawn engine. The recoil starter is the pull-start mechanism on the back of the engine that enables you to start your lawnmower. The starter cord is also called a starter rope. The following video is a step-by-step instructions for replacing a broken cord in the recoil starter for your lawnmower.
My name is Ben Huttash and I am addicted to projects.

Add another happy DIYer to your fans. I just repaired the pull starter on my 1975 B&S mower. So B&S used rivets back then as well. Maybe I’ll get another 45 years use. The spring jumped out at me. It was easy to get it back into place. I started with the spring hooked into place on the starter housing and wound the spring into place - from the outside in. Once in the housing I lined up the second spring hook with the tab on the engine shaft. Thank you.

Real life repairs. Thank you for not throwing in the towel and stopping the repair when the spring broke. You soldiered on and succeeded. Treat yourself to a box of band aides for a job well done. And clean the cut out before an infection sets in.

Saw rivets and knew it couldn’t be right. Saw the bolts and thought maybe. Thanks for a real life vid without a factory production mower shiny and new. Best of the ‘how to’ in this department.

It is fortunate for me (and perhaps others watching this video) that you also had spring troubles when replacing the cord. I too had spring problems, and it helped to see how to deal with that in addition to just the cord. Thanks!

Thank you so much for the great instructions! You and your bloody finger make me feel less incompetent. (Lol) Last week the pull cord broke off and sure enough I had the identical problem you had with a Briggs and Stratton. My spring had also broken off. Local shop didn’t have one and it would be a week before they got another. I remanufactured my spring just like yours. Two hours later and recoiling it four times, I got it to seat properly. Thanks again!

THANK YOU!!! I don't know how much money that you saved me, but you instructions were flawless. I followed your guidance to the letter, complete with a cut on my finger (not thumb). reinstalled it & she started right up. My mower was a commercial job, so there were more screws, but huzzah, I didn't lose any & they all found their way back in the proper holes. Thank you!!!!

I have the exact same lawnmower. I had an extra part and I am wondering where the heck did this come from and I came into the house, found your video, you mentioned the spacer(!) and out I went to finish. I wound the spring eight times around and I measured the old rope and it was four inches shorter than my new rope so I put the pull handle back up on the handle. Pushed it outside and Bam! It fired up on the one pull. Your video is a wonderful blessing.

This was great for me. I first turned it the wrong direction. Pull cord didn't go in. Had to redo going the correct direction. still didn't work. I found that when I had turned it the wrong way I did something to the spring. Took it apart just like you did, used needle nosed pliers to get the spring all lined up. Put it back together and just finished mowing my lawn. Thanks.

Thank you very much! My spring was broken too but I managed to pull it all the way out and had to figure out how to rewind it. I watched complicated KZfaq videos and nearly threw up my hands, but was able to rewind it by hand and rump it the way you did. Unfortunately I wound it backwards the first time, got it all put back together, and nothing. After I rewound it the other way, voila. I feel so handy :)

Great video, simple practical explanation with good images of the detail that can be paused and compared with the reality in front of you!! The main spring dropped out of the assembly and I reinserted it the wrong way, disaster! Comparing the assembly with my effort solved the problem in no time, repositioned spring and job sorted!! Thanks

yeah I saw you can get a pre-loaded assembly but you have to drill out the rivets to get the old one off. So, I guess for the difference between the $7.00 pull cord vs the near $30.00 full assembly, plus having to drill the rivets to boot, I'll figure out how to get the spring on the hook.
