Pretty much all the bathing boxes over here on the Mornington peninsula use metal roofs. Never noticed one with felt. Need to be very well healed , sure it's the same in England.

Never been sure what to do with the nails on the overlap before, just stuck tar over them but I guess if there's seal in the gap I shouldn't worry so much.

Ever thought about using EPDM single ply rubber, much better job, much more longevity. No joints or cap sheets and comparable cost wise, guaranteed you wouldn't felt again, we've done thousands of metres and wouldn't go back. Love the location though

I do like using rubber but have found it cost more than cap over felt and most beach hut owners like their money in their wallets!!

@SJWardBuilders probably agree, especially in todays financial situation. Although as a DIY project that's only gonna cost around £400-£500 in rubber. Bit of a no brainer really

The fascia line up the slope is called the Verge, the fascia line along the gutter line (or where the water runs to) is called the Eaves.

Last summer I had to replace my shed roof felt. The only place I could roll out the felt was on the grass...it was a boiling hot summer day and that felt got so hot it killed the grass underneath!

It was very tricky but persevered with my hammer and slowly but surely made my way along that side!

Shed felt is perfectly adequate and lasts well, i use boards rather than tacks around the edges too, however I NEVER nail lateral straps onto the felt, 9not referring to the strap protectors but those added at either end) it is always the nails that go through lateral strips that fail first, really bad practice, however the joint felt nails,, (not clouts, they are too long look for 13mm) as they go through 2 layers, work as self amalgamating and create a seal. to do close edges use something like a flooring tool or a chisel laid across the head then hit the chisel, side boards also make this easier and far quicker.

I used EPDM rubber on my summerhouse roof and it still looks like new 4 years on. Bought off ebay as a kit and it seemed more cost effective when you consider you often dont find out felt is leaking until the wood starts rotting so its not just the felt that you need to replace regularly. Would this be better at the seaside?

I love using rubber roof systems but have never put it on a beach hut because of the cost.

There is a company near me that does loads of offcuts. Works out cheaper than polyester felt.

Mine cost just over £100 with adhesive for about 3m square and the offcuts have been really useful in other diy and gardening applications.

Felt who uses felt anymore. EPDM glued down lasts yearssssss. It doesn't work out that much more expensive. When I built my man cave I put EPDM on the roof that was 12 years ago still like new. Do it do it do it do it😂😂

I prefer to glue the overlaps. Putting a clout through seems wrong to me.

EPDM for me. No seams to leak, just glue it on and it should last longer than the shed.

I'd use a torch on felt ... all that effort ...

We are not suppose to use torch on. Have you ever seen a gas torch in the dark? The flame goes a long way, every thing is dry wood. When one goes up about five others burn. Not to mention the families and young children, generally they don't like being torched!😀
