When I worked for Radio Shack in the 90's while in College, they were still honoring...or..trying to honor the lifetime warranty on the Realistic tubes. If we could not get you a replacement tube, we would give you something of equal value. I don't think anyone ever came in the store while I was there to trade in a tube.

Another excellent ham video. I know how much you like the Johnson line, have you ever seen the Viking "500" transmitter, it claimed to have an output of 500-600 watts. I found it the the 1963 Allied catalog for $1050.00, that's $8798.00 in 2020 dollars.

Wow .... that was super cool getting to see inside the VFO! Seemed like a pretty intense and extensive job. Thank you for loving what you do and for having the patience/know how to keep those old units running! Amazing work Terry!

Last I heard a(a few years back), if you pressed the issue, they would make some calls, and get you a replacement tube-the new one would say longlife instead of lifetime. Of course, this is probably impossible now.

Lacquer thinner Eh? Good tip.. we still have 2 Radio Shacks in Wisconsin.. I am amazed that these Johnsons still go for over $500. You sure are good with your Johnsons.

I once pulled the face off of a PRC 77 xciever and spring tensioned gears flew everywhere. That was fun. Nothing in the tech manual about it or how to put humpty dumpty back together again. Jewelers tools and patiently playing.... Thx for the video, stay well. You don't use acid brushes for cleaning? They were my favorite tools. No debris left behind.

I worked on the PRC-77 in the Air Force. I also worked on the PRC -25 which is basically just the Tube version of the PRC-77. Also repaired many VRC-43 and VRC-46 mobile radios.

Hey Terry, great vid, as always! If possible, would you be able to set up an overhead view the next time you are showing us something like the cleaning of the vernier drive? I ask, because there were several times where your hand or the paper towel was getting in the way of the view of what you were doing. Thanks again!

Damn. You Johnson fans are a tough crowd. No advice on a DX-60 in AM mode? No speaking to a Heathkit fan? I see how it is around here... I'll stick with my DX-60, and you boys just keep playin' with your Johnsons. I'm good. My DX-60 will sound better than your Viling IIs, Rangers, and the rest of 'em! This is my last comment post. Thanks for the vids Terry

2nd comment cuz I suck obviously. I think the grids are supposed to stay home until such a time that the freak-out is over because Trump is da man. Don't drive grids, stay home. Also - your videos are very very pleasant to watch. Informative? When the heck would any of us have a chance to even see this beautiful gear, let alone learn abuot it's features, weaknesses, etc., and get to see it repaired properly? Very cool work you do.. and very entertaining vids as well. Thank you - and be careful.. from your friends at the Northern Outpost (clio. lol)

6:07 there is no evidence someone is inside before. En that's always my problem that some is inside before, whit no background of electronics but think repair something. And then just move all the evidence and tracks. And worse, they do more damage. If it was open before the nut and lock washer was gone = evidence. That is why I no longer repair devices that have been messing around with before. But we know the expression of some people here "12 crafts 13 accidents" .

I've completed my purchases on flee bay and am now ready for restoration. First off my Proud New Novice in '65 station featuring the star of the show: the amazing HW-16.. then with the addition of the novice's christmas present after he upgraded to General that year - a box of parts that said Heathkit DX-60A on the side - and the station becomes the 'Happy General in '65 station'. Now I'm afraid it was all for naught... wanting of course to work some quality AM with the old farts, goats and buzzards. Give it to me straight D(oc) Lab: will I get laughed offa the bands with a dx-60? Even if i do acceepted audio mods? Seriously. Will I? I think DX-100s are respected but mainly cuz they weigh more than the ham and besides I don't own one. I'm but a lowly QRPer you see..... 73 OM

Could you use vaccuum grease instead of the stuff you were using? I used it for years doing instrumentation mechanical assembly and the like and had no problems with it hardening or gunking up rotating assemblies and such. Just wondering.
