Yes, another Zenith console in need of attention. Not in line with my current priorities, but I needed some fun time. This one has the 5808 chassis. A very popular radio. Cabinet is in super condition. The radio itself, not so great, however repairable. I was almost ready to give up, since it had so many issues, then it spoke to me, I was sold at that point, time to restore this beauty. This is part 1. Part 2 will wrap up the repair. Not sure when I can get back to it. I have been swamped and need to address incoming repair jobs. Will do my best my friends. Thanks to all for being part of the D-lab journey. TD

This radio is very much worthy of great attention and care! It DESERVES new wiring, new capacitors, new belts, etc.!!! A thorough cleaning of the chassis, and all other parts, with tons of TLC as you go about it. Fantastic fix for that switch by the way! Good on you!

I had one of these when I was just starting out in electronics as a young teenager. It was already 20 years old, I'd lugged it home from the attic of the last farmhouse on the road in Long Island before they converted the farm into a housing development. It needed some cleaning and eventually some new caps, but it worked and was extremely sensitive, especially at night. Listened to a lot of DX on that old thing back then.

Nice work. Glad you showed the point where you were about to call it as a lost cause, we all reach that point, but you showed how old gear can surprise you. I especially liked the band select fix, similar to what I was thinking could be done but your method with the J-B Weld probably worked out simpler. If it's rugged enough and hidden from view, great! As for Part 2, we'll see it when you do it! ☺

Now you made me (thanks), have to take a look at my Zenith console Farm Radio 6J357 which just recently stopped playing. Picked it up around the block at a garage sale and to make it play initially it only needed a replacement audio transformer. Listened to Radio Australia from here in California to test it just after that component replacement....what fun. Also got replacement speaker fabric from Nico in Italy and visited him and his wife with my wife on vacation a couple summers ago and toasted with some local Prosecco.

I loved the repair! I am attempting to replace wires, switches, capacitors and tubes on an 1941 Wards Airline 80 watt AM and citizen band model 04WG-1168 radio!

That is well worth saving. I have a '46 Zenith console with both FM bands and it sounds great. Yours has the infamous 6X5 rectifier which is known to short and take out the power transformer. Best to replace it with a modern day one.

Greetings: The tuning eye tube is definitely tired, but an increase in plate voltage can usually help. Currently the plate is connected to the output side f the field coil. Moving to the input side (from + side of c24 to + side of C23) )should increase the brightness somewhat.

I just finished restoring one of these, my family heard Japan bombed pearl harbor on the set. It was the very set that inspired me to go into electronics when I found it in my grandparents closet in 1968. I inherited it in 2005 and after being dark since 1947, it works and talks again. After many challenges everything is back except I now need the correct power transformer for it. Back in the early 60's a local shop put a 10S transformer in it and is way way too high of B+, that and the 6.3 volt isn't right either....but that'll be soon corrected.

I changed out the 6X5 retifier, Put a 5Y3 in with a Hammond 270 DX power transformer. Radio works great and no worry of the rectifier tube taking out the power transformer!. I also insatalled a line fuse for added protection.

Terry- Why do you not make a speaker to chassis jumper? It is easy to do, & cheap too. Use the base off of a bad tube for the male half and a salvaged tube socket for the female half. A few feet of wire & VIOLA!. I have quite a number of these home made jumpers I have made over the years. Also many times they will work on more than one make and model of radio. Good kludge repair on the lever assy! I have 1 left in my parts box when I get to restoring another Zenith I have.

I have the same exact set I was given yesterday the person got tired of it taking space.. it had the same switch issue which someone fixed. they used a L shaped piece of metal with a hole in it and they used a small hose clamp over the pot metal shaft and a nut and bolt to connect the two..

Issue with IF can could be the infamous silver mica disease tho I'm not sure any of the silver mica caps formed by layers of mica between two plates actually go to ground.

your dial belt lengths are 9-3/8 JFD part # 80. and 9-25/64 length GC part # 115. If you can find these two belts there is the part numbers. these are the two listed for The zeinith 8S463 model from the "Radio Dial Belts" Book By Ray Bintliff. De VE3TYA

Maybe not economical for shop repair, but if the power transformer is good, always worth breathing life into the dinosaurs. Old rubber wiring in the old ZNths a given.

I love me some Zenith Radio's, but sometimes it seems like they practiced black magic. Mine had among other things a bad output transformer & speaker, a frozen volume control, several burned beyond recognition resistors and the usual bad wax caps....and pwr. transformer. Good luck.

I think I have that linkage you need. I have a pretty crusty Zenith that could be fixed. But, it needs completely re-wired and I don’t have the cabinet for it. So, it’s pretty much a parts chassis unfortunately. I have a deal in mind.

Also play the radio for a while once you get it recapped with the weak tubes. They are like a CRT where they become lazy from sitting around a long time and to wake them up the only thing they need is some use. I've seen it happen. Obviously shorts and gas or any other defects such as that get them out of there! Anyway if the set is performing well even with the tubes that are in it why change them? The best test of a tube is in the circuit.

If JB Weld fails, get some BONDIC UV activated adhesive, they use it to fill teeth, very strong,. Look it up on YT

Great suggestion. I was thinking of the same thing. The only thing is that you have to do multiple layers to build up the joint. And it's expensive compared to JB weld

I have a 1960 Zenith console and the FM frequency is no longer working. There is him but no reception. It did work but a little quarkie. There is a Stereo light that didn’t light up until I had the unit on FM frequency for about 20 minutes. The AM works fine. Would I need an antenna? Or is it another issue?

I did a 12S569Z with the rubber wiring replacement, bad tubes, and cabinet restore. It was a big job and unfortunately my oscillator coil ended up bad. Let me know if you happen to know of one available.

Oh I see now there is a shaft within a shaft one goes to the volume control and the other one has a flywheel that's probably the tuner of course

I've got and 8S463 in my basement workshop right now! Very minimal cosmetic work needed. Power transformer is shot though, so I'm working on sourcing one. Any suggestions? I ask b/c the schematics don't give the winding voltages :( As always, love your vids! Oh, and for the band selector link arm, you could try this stuff: www.muggyweld.com/product/super-alloy-1/ I've used it in the past to restore pot metal toys (fill cracks and pits) from the 30s and 40s as well as fix a pot metal bose satellite speaker wall mount bracket.

yes on the left for the tone and on the right for preselect stations .
