How to repair fix an electric motor - replace carbon brushes

Often motors only need a cheap $2 part to be working as good as new. Carbon brushes can wear out and they are replaceable. The ones I used cost only $1.29 for the pair. And that included shipping.

Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. I am repairing my pool robotic cleaner, and need to replace the impeller motor brushes. I originally thought I'd have to solder the replacements' copper wiring onto the circuit board itself, but seeing your technique gave me just the info I needed! I appreciate your help!

Thank you so much man! This was very helpful! Keep it up! Took me ages to find brushes at a local store!! Finally found one at an old Mom and Pop store 20 minutes away! Now I spent $9 for my fuel pump instead of $300 by just changing the brushes in the motor! Cheers mate!

Wow, what a great vid! I quickly realized it's not the motor that I'm working on, but I couldn't stop watching - great angle, very good lighting, very clear and a thorough explanation. Good job, dude :-)

The "thing" that the brushes ride on is called a commutator. If the brushes are as worn as the ones pictured you should check the commutator to see if the mica needs undercutting. If the commutator is worn to the same diameter as the mica then the harder mica will eat away the new brushes and/or cause the brushes to chatter. But you can often get away with one brush change without undercutting. Luckily for all of us BLDC motors are coming into play and we won't need brushes.

They are called brushes. What they brush against is called the armature. They do not 'alternately contact' the armature. They constantly contact it. Using the new springs, even cut down, gave them the wrong pressure. Too little and the brushes will stick in their carriers. Too much pressure, and the brushes will wear out prematurely. Good job, though! Most people wouldn't even try. :)

The part of the armature that the brushes run on is the "commutator"...

Actually they stay in contact with the commutator.

Excellent tutorial, Carbon Brushes are very easy to alter sizes..Sand paper eats away at the carbon very aggressively..long as you avoid the area where the copper conductor is embedded

Beautiful. These days, people are so quick to toss it out, and buy new. Nobody looks into why it failed. Funny thing is, a lot of times, it's something as simple as this. Kind of a lost art...

My electric leaf blower abruptly started to smell and lose power. I watched this video and figured I'd do much the same. So disassembled the motor. I removed the brushes (which were in good shape) and lightly sanded the commutator. I reassembled it and it started just fine and at full power but quickly started to small and to lose power. Any ideas on what to check next?

Most Motor using brushes to convert from D.C. to A.C., the design is spring pushed the brushes touch near the armature to rotate strong magnet rotate back and forward to create Alternator current , brushes is cheap , brushes can grind down certain size.

I have a 1927 WHITE brand electric machine, the motor works but smells funny and I can feel a vibration when I touch it, not grounded? also, the electric cord (inside the motor) is old cracked rubber covered with cloth. the machine is great. does anyone know how to RE-WIRE this scary machine. I don't want a shock or a fire, thanks I like your instructions about the brushes.

The back plate of the motor where the brush assembly is, there should be two holes. If you push the brushes back in their slots, take toothpicks and stick them in those two holes. They'll hold the brushes back for you until you get them over the commutator. Then just pull them out once in place.

Sorry -- this is a good effort. But the narrator either does not understand the technology, or the terminology used to describe it. Those are brushes, not contactors. That is an armature, not a shiny round thingie. That is a braided connector, not a copper thread. Use words, and we'll all become better technicians. Recommend you go elsewhere to avoid some of the bad advice imbedded here.
