Thank you so much! I was at our local new/used book store and they had the new Sara J Maas book for 2.99. It is 6 months old. But the duct jacket was damaged. So I picked the least damaged copy…or so I thought. When I got home and took the book out of the bag i felt the text block slip in my hands, but the hardcover hadn’t moved. I’m glad I found your video! Thank you!!!

This is so great! Just got a copy of Devilman Classic which is kind of hard to come by and expensive to replace and the binding is like the third book you showed which has pulled away from cover, imma just go buy a paint brush and some glue and fix it myself instead of worrying about refunding and replacing it!

Aha so glad I found this video , just received a copy of Coraline, a visual companion , and sadly at the top , it seems the textblock has come away from the spine . I was really starting to panic. It’s only a little bit that has come un glued , but i’m guessing that’s why the case has a little play where it’s come un stuck? I’m hoping I can fix it with the help of your video ! Would this be the same as the last book you fixed in your video ? Thank you a brilliant way to follow video .

Welcome! I am just starting to get back into the swing of making videos after a long year moving into a new house and creating (and vlogging) my dream library room, but I have repairing spines near the top of my list for upcoming repair videos! I don’t actually sew them, though. I glue them with PVA glue, but depending on the condition of the book it can end up looking pretty seamless. Keep an eye out for that in the next few months. I have one repair video in the queue before that one, but I’ll probably film them the same day and release in close succession. 🤓

Absolutely! I’d recommend using the same type of water-based PVA glue and wrapping some plastic film around the corner, then set a heavy book on top while it dries.

Interesting! In my case, I've a Fernando Pessoa's biography, which has almost one thousand of pages, and, during the read, the book's spine did stick off, but the glue is at the spine yet. Do you know how take off the old glues from the spine? It just has fixed solidly.

That looks lovely, im going to try that. But why do you press the book? Doesnt that just press the pages together? I thought you pressed the back (spine?) to the pages, on all three sides of the book. A press doesnt do that. At least i cant see it doing that.
@SquirrellyNerdyJess
@SquirrellyNerdyJess Жыл бұрын
No, you don’t want to glue the spine down because it needs the flexibility to move when the book is opened. The pressure from pressing will ensure the hinge paper sticks to the cloth where needed without affecting the rest of the spine.

I went to a yard sale and I found a very nice hardback lined journal that honestly looks like it came out of a harry potter movie. I have a couple books I want to carry in my satchel bag. They don’t fit vertically so I want to store them horizontally. Do I put them in spine down? I want to preserve them as I carry them. I’d assume putting them spine up could ruin the pages by putting the books pressure on the pages ?? Thanks for your knowledge

@@SquirrellyNerdyJess thanks. I was just worried if it could damage the binding of the books or the books themselves by storing them spine down in a messenger/ satchel bag. I’m just trying to think of the best way to carry the two books, highlighters, and the colored pens all together.any tips?
@SquirrellyNerdyJess
@SquirrellyNerdyJess 2 жыл бұрын
@@starfox2215 Putting them spine down won’t necessarily damage them, but it does depend on how the books might come in contact with other objects in your bag, which is why I recommended a book sleeve. But I have also carried books loose in my bag before, both spine up and spine down. If you treat them carefully as they go in and out and make sure they’re not at risk of being bumped by other items, there’s nothing inherently wrong with carrying them that way.

Thank you for this information. I've been scouring the internet for info on how to do this right. I just have a couple questions regarding the use of PVA glue for this. I have a newer (2010) hardcover book with this issue and want to do a good job fixing it, but am worried in my inexperience I will end up ruining it. First, I've found a few people who state the PVA glue will eventually cause the binding to curve inward. Have you ever noticed this happening after a period of time? Second I am a bit concerned about the PVA glue's strength. Given that this is a book that sees a lot of use, would you recommend using a stronger glue? Have you tested the method with other glues? I was thinking E6000 might be good because it is both strong and flexible. Have you ever had an issue with your reglued books coming unglued when you used PVA?
@SquirrellyNerdyJess
@SquirrellyNerdyJess 2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t experienced any problems with PVA glue over time; it’s possible it may degrade again over a very long time, as in decades, but that depends on the storage conditions of the book, handling, etc. which would affect other adhesives all the same I should think. If you want to try a different adhesive, that’s fine, but you’ll want to make sure it’s acid-free/neutral PH, clear drying ideally, non-yellowing, non-toxic, and strong enough but flexible. There are actually book binding adhesives out there labelled as such if you want to try one of those. I was trained to use PVA glue by my bosses, who have been in the book business for decades. Hopefully that helps!

So im not gonna lie, im not comfortable with breaking the pages from the book cover, but i seems as if i have to separate the end pages from the cover. Could I use an exacto knife to separate them and glue them back or would that damage it beyond repair?
@SquirrellyNerdyJess
@SquirrellyNerdyJess 11 ай бұрын
You don’t necessarily need to break the endpapers away to do this repair, but in any case, I’d avoid using an exacto knife as you then risk further damage.
@chadwalston28
@chadwalston28 11 ай бұрын
I see. This makes sense. The whole in the center of the spine isn't big enough to fit my brush, but the end papers still seem very sturdy which I would think may rip it incorrectly to apply the glue. That is why I suggested an exacto knife to help make a clean break and not rip down the paper attached to the cover
