Simply needs a couple of small screws and a drill without needs of special tool. I have found this easier way of replacing the input shaft seal of a steering gear box. You don't have to remove the steering gear box if there is enough access room to work on. Hope this help you good!

It's important to drill the two holes with the drill. I once tried to drill holes with a spoon, this video saved my life.

This technique worked fine for me! I was worried about the effort needed to drill the two holes, but was pleased to see that I had drilled through only a thin seal, and not a hardened piece of steel. After removing the gear box from my 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis, I drilled 2 holes using a 1/8" titanium coated drill bit. Drilling took only 26 seconds per hole(!) and it was very obvious when to stop drilling (when the bit was through the seal). The seal removed easily with 2 screws. THANK YOU tgmac8288 for saving me from tearing down the gear box just to fix the input shaft seal! I wish I had tried drilling the box while it was still on the car using a rotary tool; there was probably room for it, meaning that I might even have saved removal and installation of the gear box. I removed the pitman arm from the gear box but did not separate the arm from the center link. With both front wheels suspended it was still a bit of a hassle getting the pitman arm back on, but it was possible to leave it connected to the center link.

FYI the retainer you call a C clip is a Snap Ring and the best way to remove and install them is snap ring pliers. Not an expensive tool but good ones pay off with snap ring pliers because the tips of the pliers can break off and happens often to the cheaper ones. A C clip has no holes at the ends where the gap is and they are generally used with the tension on the inner surface. Snap rings with the holes are used with tension inside or out and the pliers change for either and different gap size for the rings size sometimes.

I noticed he was having trouble with the snap rings getting them in and out with regular needle nose pliers iv'e had to do thing with the wrong tools before and the right tools too and the right for the job makes the job ten times easier. And also drilling the seal wont mess nothing up necessary but if u get metal shavings in that power steering gear box you'll be replacing more than a couple seals not saying don't do it just saying be aware of what your doing. But good video on how to do it without the proper tools because i know everyone doesn't have the specialty tools they may need to get the job done.
@tgmac8288
@tgmac8288 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for telling people to fix with specialty tool which is totally opposite to the purpose of this video. If a simple tool can accomplish the job, why do you need the specialty tool just for one job? Don't you know that "wrong tool" means the tool can't accomplish the job? If you did work on this power steering, your must understand the concern about the metal shavings will never happen.

This video will help you to fix the input shaft seal leakage only if you have the same type of power steering. If you are not sure that is only input shaft seal leakage, I would suggest you to clean the power steering up to find out any other leaks in order to repair or replace it properly.
