Find out how I managed to fix my deflated pair of Air Max 720s with super basic tools and some silicone.
This also works for Air Max zephyr and MX-720-818 shoes too. Mine are actually a pair of Mx818s but they all use the same air unit

So I keep getting a lot of similar comments about how I did it so I decided I'd pin this comment as a sort of FAQ. 1. "You only drilled one hole, you should have drilled another as an air vent" Yes, this is true BUT I believe that the fact I didn't drill air vents was a key factor in the success. Drilling air vents would have made it significantly easier to fill the unit with silicone however I think this would have resulted in a worse shoe. Because I didn't drill any, I actually ended up inadvertently plugging whatever tiny puncture was letting the air out, and was able to "pump up" the shoe again. This would not have been possible if I had let all the air out. This is what made the end product so good. Filling it with silicone completely not only would have made it even heavier, but silicone doesn't provide as much "pressure" as you'd think; the trapped air was necessary to take the shoe from "wearable" to "pretty good". My advice is to choose the method you think will work best. I kinda did this pumping up thing by accident, so it may be that drilling air vents and going for maximum silicone fill is more reproducible. 2. "How long does it take to dry" If you mean dry as in when does it stop oozing out, I kept picking away at it and removing the excess until it sealed itself more or less cleanly. This took maybe about 5 days. I don't really remember. If you mean dry as in stiffen up, it might never. Like I said for the previous question, I don't believe the silicone alone will provide enough spring to make it feel like it did before. This could be for a few reasons: Maybe it doesn't cure because inside the air unit there is limited air to react with, or maybe the silicone just isn't stiff enough. 3. "They are so heavy" Yes they are. But this doesn't matter. For me it's only noticeable when I hold them, not when I wear them.

The best way is to lay the silicone tube (sealed) in hot water for 20 minutes. It flows out much easier and fills the cavity loads better. Also, with a really small a screwdriver (ideally a small pick) poke holes all the way round the underside right to the end. Maybe 7 holes each side. This allows air to escape (but not sealer to escape) and again, it flows real fast and smooth and fills properly. This also speeds up drying time which btw is around 4 days. 1 sealer tube fills one shoe exactly and if you only have 1 shoe that’s popped, do both because they feel different when wearing them. They look amazing if done correctly

@a1d3nh0
@a1d3nh0 2 жыл бұрын
@@chewie3397 you’ll find that wherever you don’t have a small air hole, the sealer won’t flow because pressure fills up so small holes from a pick all the way around the underside, as close to the very front as possible too so sealer can get all the way around. Easy, honestly. If you don’t poke holes, sealer won’t flow so you’ll see if you need more. Good luck. :-)

This reminds me of the pair of Nike air-cushioned shoes I bought more than ten years ago. I only wore it for less than a month before the bottom cracked. When I returned the entire pair to Nike, they said it was caused by external force and refused to refund the money. I have stopped buying anything Nike related products since. I started buying Asics and some less popular brands like Brookes, New Balance, and even some long-established Chinese brands. I still have the shoes in question and use them as a reminder to me or others. I have kept this for a long time and thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my experience.

I did one of my 720s a couple of months ago and yeah it was really messy and it kept oozing out so what I did was make a very small plug so it wouldn’t connect with the floor which was perfect and the extra weight didn’t bother me at all but now the other bubble in other trainer has popped what an absolute rip off £160 and I’ve worn them about 12 times but I’m determined to get my money’s worth out of them so I’m gonna do the other one would you drill a couple of holes in them so the air expels so it doesn’t spew out what do you recommend Peter?

I've been wanting to try this for YEARS. I have had dozens of pairs die prematurely from the 4 other versions of polyurethane midsole death but no popped bubbles. But I take comfort knowing that when i pop a bubble at least it's the problem with an actual solution.

@@312BBthat was my idea as well. I have both shoes still ok, but on the right one, i can see it will be bad soon, so here I am. Only thing with polyurethane, is not so gel like, like silicone when dried... So i imagine you would have a harder sole, and it would start cracking inside as you put pressure on different place on the soles.

You should’ve made at least 2 holes -avoiding the air compression that made it hard to inject more silicone. And another top is to use crystal silicone, it’s more transparent and looks like water when you use it. Putting the unopened silicone in hot water for 5 minutes would also make it flow a lot easier. 9/10 for effort though

Man, it happened to TWO PAIRS OF Nikes. I found a video a while ago from a Brazilian guy (my home country) and it worked just fine. I came to the conclusion that the silicone itself offers spring enough to support my weight (I’m 150kg). I live in Chicago USA and I sent the first pair to Nike and they didn’t do anything for me. Shame on them. You did a great job, specially because you had to handle things that didn’t go as expected and you did it regardless!

The silicone I bought was advertised as clear. You might have to do some tests. I'm not really sure why it dried like that to be honest. Adding holes at the top sounds like a good idea but you gotta keep in mind that what made the shoes so good in the end was the fact that they were sealed because going in and adding more really increased the internal air pressure. This might be harder to do if you've got extra holes at the top

@@PeterWingFashion do the 2 holes at the front so when you squeeze in from the back as it fills the front the air will push out. You won't get any bubbles in the silicone then either. I think there are positives and negatives to doing this. In hindsight yes I would have been able to avoid a lot of mess and fill it with more silicone if I drilled air vents but I think I achieved such a good pressure by actually sealing the air in with the silicone rather than letting it escape. It's obviously your call which way you want to do it but I clearly got away without them.

You need three holes , the one you pump the silicone from and two small holes in the end to leet the air out while you fill it , simple physics !!!! You will be able to do it in one go .

Yeah absolutely! You can watch the end of the video for some more information, but apart from being about 400g heavier they're good to wear.

Ok I tried this it's ben 12 hours there not drying inside not to mention the holes are still oozing. There heavy like a pair of steel toe work boots. I won't be doing this too my other 2 pairs . Il try to send them back to Nike. My advice don't do it sorry it's a fail
@PeterWingFashion
@PeterWingFashion 2 жыл бұрын
Ok, first of all the weight was something I clearly specified in the video. I said that it was worth the weight because its only really noticeable when you pick them up not when you wear them. Second of all, they don't "dry" I believe this is mainly because while the silicone is trapped inside it can't cure. The consistency you get when you first pump it in is unlikely to change. Yes the holes still ooze but after a point the pressure will equalise. I just kept removing the silicone until it stopped. After it did, i let it dry. Sorry it didn't work out for you but I'm pretty sure I covered what you're saying in the video.

Saludos a todos desde Brasil. No recomiendo este procedimiento. Queda mal hecho y no dura nada.

Can you not just seal the puncture that caused the air leak? Existing air can no longer escape thus restoring to it's original state, theoretically. Unless the bubble holds compressed air originally. 🤔 But that would seem unlikely. If a puncture itself can be resealed, there would be no need to add the additional weight and mess of silicone.
