I did this on a 2000 2500, but the speedometer stays at zero till you go a little faster, then it jumps to 27, and then to 42, and then to 64, depending on whatever speed bracket youre in. Do you have any clue what this means/how to fix it? I looked it up and dash issues are common, but no one has the exact problem and Im not sure how to reset it. Some guy jumped it with some expensive pack in a parking lot and all the gages freaked out after that, but apparently thats common with a bad alternator. Now all the gages work except the speedo? Any input would be helpful, thanks!

@@michaelmcginley1875 It's most likely the stepper motor. If your transmission is performing normally, start with the stepper motor. They're cheap and relatively simple to replace with a little soldering (I learned on the fly).

Tip to the tip - (2004 Silverado 5.3) Use a socket, almost the length of the bolt spacing, and simply use a pry bar/large flat screwdriver to push the shim/bushing towards the front (using leverage from the back/larger side). Takes about 5 seconds instead of doing all the other stuff. Also, no real need to remove the serpentine belt and just take it off the alternator pully and let it suspend out of the way. In addition, you can get away with only removing the throttle body side of the air intake tube (if you even need to). Simply flex it back out of the way. Everything else looked good but be sure not to get crazy on over tightening the stud on back of alternator. I have seen these broken off with too much force.

Cool! I can save the widow next door a few bucks. Mechanical skills are adequate, I just don't like working on cars, but this looks pretty easy. Tip for the mechanic. I doubt you could feel the current 12V can push through your skin. If you don't like sparks, there is a trick using a credit card that will minimize the archy sparky. Hold the cable in place against the batt terminal with a cc (a card without a chip might be in order) sandwiched in between. While keeping the cable firmly in place with one hand, slide the card out from between the two. Now insert and tighten the terminal bolt. Takes a bit if dexterity but it's not difficult.

Clear and concise. Nice job. My alternator boiled off some of my battery electrolyte. Found it was putting out 14.2volts. I don’t have a manual for the truck (2005 GMC Sierra 5.3), but I think the voltage should be between 12.0 and 12.5.

I am wrong about voltage range stated above. The battery voltage should be around 12.5v when vehicle is OFF. When running 14.2v is normal. Again, I don’t own the manual for the Sierra. Someone who does own the manual can weigh in to verify or refute.

Great video the only tip I could give that would help, those little washers that go with the long bolts that hold the alternator on. Take your hammer lightly tap on them to the left towards the front of the engine and they will loosen up space for the alternator to fit in easily. You can get your alternator on there without pushing or hitting with a hammer like some people do. But great video.

There are TWO different alternators for this series of truck that differ in amperage.... The easy key is matching up the location of alternator sensor. One attaches to the side and, as illustrated in the video, the other attaches to the rear.... You would the compression of the bolts would make it as easy to slide the new unit in but, it is always a struggle to get the piece past the forward bolt shims. NEVER beat on the New Alternator to set the piece. You may have to use a block of wood as a dead blow anvil or, the butt end of a rubber end of a fiberglass hammer to set the piece to line up with the bolt holes.....
