How to replace an interlocking roof tile

This video shows how to replace an interlocking roof tile, such as the Marley Ludlow Major, or the Redland renown. Roof tiles can break easily and in most cases replacing the broken roof tile is not difficult. When accessing the roof it is essential to use the correct equipment so either a suitable scaffold or a roof ladder should be used.

While cleaning the moss from my roof I found a broken tile that had been bodge repaired but was hidden by the moss growth. I watched this video and was able to change the tile for a spare I had and it went just as described. Very pleased and thank you for the video.

Thank you sincerely, I’m autistic and have been working through renovating my house. During the disassembly of the scaffold for the main roof re-felt, I cracked a tile with a long pole. I struggle tackling jobs unless I know everything that I need to do. This being English and expertly explained, has totally put my mind at rest🥰🥰🥰😆😭💪

@@ultimatehandyman removed and replaced the broken tile, then noticed 2 more, where the scaffolder had walked on the roof. Second one swapped no probs, but the third one was two courses down from the Ridge, so was inflexible. Had to use a rubber mallet to even get the tiles above to retract, then they all became stuck. Fought them for 10 minutes no movement and it started raining☔️ 😭😭😭.😆🙄🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Luckily I had a professional car door card tool, which rocks them up and back. Then i used the claw of a hammer to bully them back into place, nightmare, but finally got it sorted😛😛🕺🏼🕺🏼😆😆❤️❤️❤️

Great video. We had scaffolding up on our kitchen roof to get to the main roof to replace broken and missing tiles and the scaffolding broke 6 tiles under the boards they'd placed to spread the load. Scaffolders said they'd inform the roofer. We've tried for a week to get in touch but all means of communication have failed so now I have to source replacement tiles and do it myself before the rain comes next week 😡.

Thank you so much, just got home and a tile right next to a velux window has slipped down. After watching this video going via the safety of the velux window with just my arms outside I pushed the above tile up, slid up the loose tile and screwed it back down followed by pulling back the tile above. Sorted!. The original nail for some reason wasn't long enough, the long thin screw worked a treat.

+neilobusk We had three wasps nests about two years ago. I searched the internet and the overwhelming advice was not to try and get rid of them yourself, as they recommended special clothing. I called out a pest control firm, a woman turned up in shorts and just sprayed them with a chemical and it wiped them out LOL. It's normally every third row, but sometimes they nail every row. Ultimate Handyman hey no worries. I’ve replaced the tile today thanks to you but I worry that if i ever have to get a nail out I risk cracking the tile where you’re having to lever with your jemmy. You know what I mean? I saw that you didn’t crack it when you got the nail out but is there another way to get a nail out if you think the tile might crack as you use the jemmy? Or is it just a case of putting some cloth underneath or something? Cheers.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 3 жыл бұрын
@@genericuser2339 I know what you mean, but normally the nails used are galvanised clout nails, so they are normally pretty easy to remove (not like annular ring nails etc.) As long as you use a wide jemmy bar there is little chance of cracking the tile. You could also use a wide piece of wood to spread the force out, under the jemmy ;-)

Hi mate , great vid , I have a dormer bungalow and all the water from the fibreglass part of the roof is channled down one row of tiles due to it collecting in the dormer gutter and flowing through the down pipe and as a result this one row of tiles are starting to look very thin due to the cascading water taking off the sandy surface , ( the tiles look identical to the ones you show in your video ) is it possible that I can just swap them around with some other tiles that are not getting the same treatment elsewhere on the roof ? You're advise would be greatly appreciated . Also now subscribed , have watched several of your other vids and have found them to be really helpful and informative, thanks and keep up the great work 👍

Was wondering if they're all nailed in how do you get the last nail back in? I suppose if they're nailed into the little wood risers any leaks would run down gaps in that over the paper if I left left one nail out but wouldn't feel comfortable leaving that hole.

You don't, you just leave that nail out. The tiles should not go anywhere 😉

Due to storm damage, I need to replace a tile that is directly below a velux window. Obviously I cannot push any tiles back as described in the video. Any suggestions?

You said not to use a ladder, i have to replace a tile in the 1st row just above the gutter. Now i do have a safety harness and rope i can do it from the roof but would my weight stop me sliding the tiles up and if its nailed would a ladder position be better? Thanks for the video

If you can reach from the ladder safely, that is fine- but please make sure that someone foots the ladder (I know a guy that died falling from a ladder) Thanks for the comment 👍

We've got Cedar shakes on our house in the U.S. (probably 5% of houses use this) -and we've got a steep roof (better for snow loads.) When it comes to roofing, no thanks. I'll call an expert, or fly the Ultimate Handyman over to do it. ;)

Good video. Those look exactly the same as the roof tiles I have been messing with..the annoying thing the roof tiles DO NOT have any make written on the back... dark red and similar to them or exact...?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 3 жыл бұрын
The best bet is to remove one and take it to your local builders merchants, they should be able to identify the make. I'm no expert on roof tiles, most of my life I have lived in houses with slate roofs. Thanks for the comment 👍

Hi, Do you have any tips for walking/crawling on all fours on the tiles. I want to remove my chimney and was quoted £450 but think ill do it myself for £30 in materials. Its a shallowish roof about 30-35 degrees on a bungalow with redland 50 double roman concrete tiles. My biggest concern is cracking a tile while moving across the roof. Cheers

No, sorry. The only thing I can think of is a roof ladder. I once walked on a slate roof at my old house and cracked several of the slates 😱
