Today we are replacing axle U-joints in a Jeep Wrangler. As you can see the ones that I'm dealing with are very rusty. I used an air hammer and a balljoint press to press out the universal joints and install new ones. As far as how to replace the universal joints the procedure similar on any vehicle with a solid front axle. Remove the retaining clips, press the old U joint out, and press the new u joint back in.

I used a 3/16" punch and got those clips out without too much fuss. I'm doing a 2001 F350 :)

Boy, I wish I had one of those tools. I used a hammer and chisel like you said. I sprayed it, heated it, and it finally pop those C-clips.

My battery impact wouldn’t take it off so all I did was use WD-40 and smacked it with a hammer, that moved it enough to break it free to use my impact. Great video by the way.

Wow, that was a lot of rust. I've gotta do this to my 99 F350 at some point, but I don't think there's as much rust under there even though it spent most of its life as an Iowa farm truck. Even still, I think I'll add a sand blaster to my shopping list. Nice ball joint press by the way. Been looking at upgrading to that same press kit. Was never completely happy with the one I got from Harbor Freight.

Press kit has been great. Little bit of grease on the threads and let her rip with the impact. No issues.

If you don't have a way to clean rust off of parts you can soak parts in white vinegar.

Got mine apart (Chevy K5) with a pitman arm puller and a small long socket. Had to use a breaker bar. Be sure to wear eye protection and cover the joint with some plywood or something to protect yourself.

I was worried about using the impact to remove the universal joint. I'll give it a go seeing as I haven't had any luck working a ball joint press manually.

Most people don't do it, but you should lube the threads on the ball joint press with a heavy grease before you use it the first time. It'll keep it from eating itself😅 He was rather daring though to turn that screw by hand because once they get older they can get wicked sharp and you'll try to twist it like that and It'll cut your hand
