LOL, NOPE, he left the WHEEL On while taking the hub off, NO ONE DOES THAT..you always take the wheel off FIRST..so you don't have to deal with the excess weight and Bulk. Sad.

I've probably watched a dozen KZfaq videos on this subject over the last couple days as I begin a first-time project to replace my bearings. Your video is by far the best out there. Your explanations were clear and you had great camera angles. Thanks for putting out such an informative and well done video.

Thank you so much. This is a great “ how to “ video. I have helped my dad do this many times but always had the ability to ask him any questions. He passed away last year but the family and I are taking his boat on a road trip next month. I know at least one wheel needs new bearings and now I have the confidence to do the job. Thanks again.

Love it! I just got a brand new tandem axle EZ Loader trailer with the boat I cought and I'm looking at the wheels and thinking to myself "damn, I need to know how to change the bearings on this thing or even just understand how they look like just to have the know-how", and now, not only do I know what the inside looks like, I feel pretty damn comfortable tackling this operation on my own. Just gotta go buy that bearing packer kit and race installing tool and I'm good to go. First thing I need to do, though, is jack the trailer up to check for any noises. Great tip and what a difference from the original wheel noise to after you replaced and repacked the bearings! Thanks for an awesome and informative video.

I was intimidated to tackling this project but I didn't really know where to take my utility trailer for service. I decided to do it myself and this video was spot on. I had to ruin my seal when removing, but I was replacing anyhow. Original bearings are 14yrs old, I thought that's pushing it on age, so hopefully these will last another 14yrs. Thanks again - perfect video

Great video and the first I've seen that demonstrated what a bad bearing sounds and looks like. Good job. I also thought that the bearing grease looked a little milky on the initial disassembly and might have been worth mentioning ( or it could have been that extra beer I consumed while going thru several videos ) . I hope to produce some 'how-to' videos in the future and hope that I can do near the great job that you have presented. The fishing line into the bearing seal is another observation that I'm glad you mentioned, (who would-a-thunk-it). Yes I agree with the reviewer who felt you should find a sponsor. Great job... Thanks

Excellent job! I have watched a lot of video's on how to adjust the bearing torque. Your's is the only one that recommends a very slight amount of play which is the proper way to set the bearings. As for having the wheel on before tightening the nut, this allow a much better feel to adjust the slack. I always check the play with the tire on. Not leaving a slight amount of play is the best way to burn up a bearing. I've done hundreds of bearings and always back off the nut until I can grab the top of the tire and feel a very slight amount of movement. Very good job. I hope people realize, a slight amount of play is what you are shooting for.

Nice to see a how-to KZfaq video done by a real mechanic. Correct application of force is essential, and well explained here. I would tend to take the wheel off first (per the recommendation below) but a matter of style. There may be a buildup of corruption/corrosion between the wheel and the hub, and doesn't hurt to check. But Dustin makes it work his way.

Hi Mr. Dustin Hoover. I have studied your video taking my own notes carefully as this is easier way I can learn but it covers everything that you said so I can print it out while following your video offline and downloaded. I thank you for your in detail step by step task. Though this video is old, it clearly is outstanding and looking forward to doing this project soon. The one thing I seen a bit different is when you were announcing the initial tools, other tools you did not announce at first was announced during the actual job but that is okay as I taken careful notes and added them to my notes. I already started purchasing the tools and thank you for your education. I hope you have more videos I can review and follow, I will check them all out. God bless you Justin and thank you kindly sir.

@@boatus , thank you kindly, I started getting new tools today and doing studies on it a bit more before taking on this task. I had a stroke a few months from PTSD overseas a few months ago so my learning is a lot more difficult than a normal human now of days unfortunately. I will have this video and my notes as back up but the ultimate goal is to get my brain focusing again from the stroke. May I suggest that boat USA sorta mimick such videos for a variety of task please? I know that video was years ago but the explanation of every aspect was indeed excellent. The only problem he did was not announce every tool he utilized while covering what tools was needed. I am happy to of caught on to this but it would increase the companies sales on tool orders during a time the economy is not great and people need to learn small things like this to continue to boat in our waters. It does for me anyhow with being legally disabled after my deployment, thank you.

@@supportyourtroopsathletes6460 Thank you for your service, and I wish you all the best in your recovery. I love that you are doing projects such as these to help improve your physical and mental health. It should be very satisfying to complete it! As you noted, this video was done many years ago, and there are a lot of things that could be done better from a production end. We have a very different process now that requires detailed outlines and approvals (and a producer on-site to ensure we don't miss anything). And we also try to put links to tools and materials used in the video description. We still create a lot of step-by-step how-tos along with other types of boating videos. (Our series of gelcoat repair videos is a perfect example.) That said, I do very much appreciate your excellent reminder, and that will certainly factor in to future videos. (I take all feedback seriously!) We have been talking about updating this video, which I believe would address your recommendations. In the meantime, check out our article that was done in conjunction with this video: www.boatus.com/expert-advice/expert-advice-archive/2013/october/repacking-or-replacing-your-trailer-tire-bearings It has all the same steps plus photos for each and a full list of tools and materials you'll need. It might be easier to print out and bring with you while you're doing the project than trying to recall all the steps from the video (while also decoding your notes). Hope this helps, and let us know how it goes!

@@boatus thank you and thank you for your kind words. Currently, I am waiting for the rest of my new tools to come in currently. I am not sure how to size up the wheel bearings just yet however after doing some measurements on the outer of the bearing buddy prior to removal 11/16 seems to be the closest feasible option that I have unless you may have a suggestion. Though I have most tools in, I just do not want to remove it untill I do. I am proud to say that I memorized every part of this video completely and looking forward to getting started here soon. I noticed a couple differences in tools such as the metal hammer on this video to the soft hammer on the link you provided but that was the main thing. The gasket puller was not mentioned in either but I ordered that anyhow. The race drivers was not mentioned at the start of this video nor mentioned yet was shown during the video and in the case at the start of the video. May I ask you however just to be sure before entering this project, by measuring the external dust cap or bearing buddy. Is that a good indicator on what size bearings to order once again?

I like how u used a bearing packer too. And I swear by that green trailer grease you used. I always check my bearings like u did for sound. Also if towing I stop after about 10 mins to check them for heat. Replaced lots of failed bearings on trailers that I bought but luckily never had one fail yet (knock wood). Oh, I usually use a piece of wood to drive the other wheel up on instead of jacking it. Thx again.

Great vid I personally don’t use bearing buddies they allow water in I’ve done wheel bearings for years I use sealed caps and some sealant on cap to prevent water in. Then make sure to put some grease on your lugs so they don’t rust And I usually just replace the whole hub just easier and cost effective .

+Russell Devane Well, I am sure your quite used to being wrong, and here you are wrong again. I gave it a thumbs down because there is no possible excuse for leaving all of that grease on the back of the wheel. Great video, thanks for uploading. Stick an ad on it so you can make some money, I feel bad getting all this info for nothing.

Great informative how-to video. I do have a question, when you say the tire should have a bit of play, are you referring to a bit of rock or roll?

Hi Sergio. We're not sure what you mean by "rock or roll," but the best way to describe it is probably to say "side-to-side motion" along the axle. Hope this helps.

Best part of this video they use MARINE GREASE... Not regular grease. Knew some one who didn't use it. After a couple months regular launch use with a new wheel hub. The entire assembly fell off going down the road.
