For those asking about which pin goes on top and which goes on bottom, it depends. You should be thinking "leading edge" and "trailing edge". This video is essentially watching this guy remove, clean, and replace, with no real explanation! Theres a video which explains it and is more detailed than this one. And give some thought to not putting that little rubber bushing on the end of one of the pins. They swell up over time and prevent the caliper from sliding.

Ah, that swelling may be why we couldn't even get the pin back into the caliper of our 2009 RAV4. I was wondering if there was a trick to getting what Toyota calls the "Bush" back in without it slipping up the pin. It absolutely would not go in the hole without sliding back up. While I'm here, does anyone know if, other than replacing the Bush, there is a trick to get it to slip into the cylinder?

Boots are definitely an overlooked item on brake jobs. I've had luck in using a bore brush to clean the ports where the caliper pins go into. This was suggested to me by a field mechanic. Excellent tips Sir.

Thank you for this video. I have asked my Mechanic twice to do this in four brake jobs and this has got to be what he is leaving out. I could not have actually gone through four sets of rotors in only 58k miles. I bought the boots and pins today including the silicone brake caliper lube and might wind up doing this myself. I have all the tools excepting a small mallet. Also, I have been reading that this is the primary reason, if nothing else is found, for the front end shudder of the Pontiac Vibe. Great video. Edit: The very common complaint of front end shudder in the Pontiac Vibe.

thanks...just did pads a few months ago and they are bad already. noticed the boots were seized but never knew it they really had a function. typed in the search bar to see what all is involved and came across your video. Now i feel confident i might be able fix them for good.

There is a third reason for premature pad wear. If they aren't properly burned in, you won't get near the expected life from them. The last set I did were ceramic pads with drilled and slotted rotors, and the manufacturers recommended procedure was 10 applications in quick succession 40 down to 20 mph, then 10 applications in quick succession 50 down to 20 mph, then drive at least 10 miles to cool pads and rotors down. If you do a complete stop before cooling them off, the rotors will have deposits burned into them and defeat the entire burn in procedure. I got 140k miles out of that set. You will smell the brakes when you do this.

Thank you so much for sharing this how to video. Most grateful because of the following: This is a method I can try myself to do in DYI. I asked my regular mechanic if she would be able to do this, so as to not pay for brand new calipers, but he stated what seems to be a very reasonable dilemma for the consumer, that is me. Whatever cost I try to save on simply buying new or rebuilt calipers is gong to be negated by the cost of his labor per hour as he will bill for the time to rebuild the caliper itself, and in the end, depending of any difficulties, if any, that he finds, it may cost me more. Hence, his recommendation is, buy new or rebuilt calipers, even at $350 each, and one hour labor ($165) per each axle still going to be cheaper than him rebuilding those rear calipers. And note that at the GMC dealership, the cost of this is close to a thousand dollars or more. When all what may be needed is just the boots, the o-rings and maybe some new guiding pins. But labor costs kill any savings for the customer.

That was one of the very best auto repair videos I have seen, and I’ve seen many. Clear, precise, informative, to the point and excellent video. Quick question: is there a reason why one would not spray some brake cleaning fluid down into those bores to get them clean? I am about to replace my caliper pins, after just changing the front brakes and rotors. They were not seized, but the boots are worn and one was kinda stuck until I fiddled with it. When I replace my rear rotors and pads tomorrow, I want to replace the pins and boots on all four (2007 Jeep Commander). Might even rebuild all four calipers and change the brake fluid while I’m at it. Looking forward to more from you, sir. Thank you!

Brake clean eats rubber. If you use it in the bore make sure you clean it out and dry it off

A boar brush works at cleaning out the slide pin area of the caliper bracket compared to a screwdriver and paper towel, also you got to be careful not to put too much grease on the slide pins always it will cause a bit of a back pressure type deal

Can you use a silicone glue to seal the boots at each end? Salt water and rain water gets in and they seize up every year.

It appears that the boots for my caliper pins have an equal diameter to the bracket hole, so I can't fit in the boot, and then especially the pin. Any tips on how to install these boots when the diameter about matches the hole?

Thank you for conducting this video. I have one caliper pin that moves in & out when I pull on it but it doesn't pop back up when I push it down by hand. I'm assuming that I need to clean the pin & apply a new boot for the caliper pin & I will be getting the Toyota branded just to make sure it fits properly. Again, I really appreciate this video as it doesn't look too difficult to do myself.

Many videos & claimed professionals failed to tell which direction to install the ATG's Slider Pin O Ring. Reason just stated many dishonest shops/mechanics installed incorrectly or installed same 2 pins in. Remember shops don't allow customers/owners in the bay areas. And they surely have many junk parts.

If you haven't paid attention to which side of the caliper bracket the rubber pinned pin goes...does it matter? if so how do you know which side is the plain pin and which side is the rubber booted side goes?

Typically the pin with the rubber ring will be on the lower pin. The one closest to the ground if that makes sense. Its not always the case so pay attention when disassembling the brakes or refer to a service manual. Thanks for your comment.

You may get damage and/or corrosion to the pins or caliper bores from water, dirt and even salt intrusion. Eventually, the pins may not slide smoothly and the calipers may stick or seize.

I always have this problem. I lubricate the pins and after a short while I find them stuck and not moving... So what is the solution and what is your advice? Note: Silicone grease is not available in my country, so what is a good alternative?

ATG & I recommend Dielectric Grease (always available in electronic/hobby stores & cheaper). Steps & procedures: 1. 11 years+ or over 155K+ (255KM) 2. Remove one Slider Pin (male) at a time (discard) & clean very good open (female) 3. Remove second Slider Pin (male) & repeat with a used T-Shirt. Do Not use paper 4. Was Slider Pin's O-Ring on the top or bottom? Replace it & light DG on it & install (if car was serviced by dishonest shop or bad mechanic, same pins or missing O-Ring) 5. Remove Dust Boots. Install new Dust Boots & apply DG on the inside of boots 6. New Slider Pins = apply medium coat of DG on Slider Pins but not on tips (a little bit is ok) 7. Install brand new Slider Pins that were just DG & DG the end that cover the Dust Boots 8. Once you got the Slider Pins & Dust Boot popped into place 9. Push & pull the Slider Pins with thumb & 2 fingers. They should both move with little effort X. Brake Pads' Shims installed correctly. And torques all that you have removed Since you didn't what year/brand/model. Assuming on Honda = wheel lug torque is 80ft lbs You don't want to go back & do the same labor because you want to save $25 for not replacing the Slider Pins, O Rings & Boots

@@seragali1353 Those O-rings has enlarged /or stretched. Brake Pads' Clips brand new? Best since I am not present, buy a complete Caliper Set (2). If you are on a budget, get one only. Get only the side this the Slider Pins are the worst. Caliper comes with new ATG's Top & Bottom Slider Pins, Boots & Piston's O Ring. You must bleed the brake line completely. ATG & I recommend you to buy ATG's Valvoline Full Synthetic Dot 3 & Dot 4 (32 oz). 1. Open cap, screen. Suck out Brake Fluid as much as possible from the reservoir. 2. Install screen 3. Pour ATG in reservoir to the top 4. Remove wheel that is furthest away from the Brake Reservoir 5. Remove Wheel Rubber Bleeder 6. Jam a clear plastic tubing on the bleeder screw 7. Fill 1/4 of ATG on empty large clear drinking bottle 8. Other end on clear tubing- Drill 2 holes on the bottle cap, insert tubing deep to bottom 9. CCW to loosen the Bleeder Screw with a 10 or 12mm wrench. 111 degrees max x. The Clear Tubing has little to nothing inside. Get in the car & pump the brake pedal for 6X. A. Get out & check the Clear Tubing = Brake Fluid is inside & brown looking B. Check to make sure no bubble inside of the Clear Tubing C. Add more ATG to reservoir D. Get inside of the car & pump the brake pedal 6X E. Brake Line should now be almost clear. The clearer like ATG with no bubble = Stop F. Tighten the Bleeder Screw & install the Rubber Cap G. You just completed one wheel. Three more to go H. You just done the best pro bleeding job by yourself & saved around $150.00 If you need more assistance, please reply your email here.

@@seragali1353 Many today companies are trying to scam people. Dielectric Grease = Silicone Grease So if you buy Silicone Grease it will cost you more. In Canada, USA, Europe, China & even so called expert KZfaqrs = most will not touch the Slider Pins. The same can be said when doing a complete timing belt replacement. All will NEVER change Inner Crankshaft Seals. They might, but they should, change the Crankshaft Seals (Outer Crankshaft's Seal). Like dealerships & many car shops doing Coolant Flush. They rarely use Distilled Water = Dishonest

ATG & my tips = you can use transmission fluid to loosen bolts You can use used Brake Fluid to kill grass weeds & to remove paint You can use Lemon or Lime Juice for rusted bolts & nuts. Pour juice in plastic bottle cup, place bolts/nut in, close cap bottle. You can shake after 2 hours or should open it the next day

Learn from my mess up today.... don't have your hand in the path of the chisel if you're trying to pry the ring out.... damn thing slipped and I stabbed myself about 1/4 inch deep between my thumb and index finger....

I am so sorry to hear that. I've hurt myself many times over the years and it always sucks. You should see all the scares on my right hand. I'm a lefty so I'm usually holding the tool with my left that I injure my right hand with.

I found you video weak for the flowing reasons.: You didn't readily label your calipers left and right and most importantly you did not clearly state if the pin with the plastic/rubber tip is installed at the top or bottom location. If varies by car you could say so. When you were dealing with the second (left) caliper your hand action was like a magician hiding his slight of hand. Other than that it is a great video an is informative.
