Having done this on a focus a couple of times now, I can absolutely tell you it's worth the extra work of taking the axle nut off the end, and removing the lower ball joint holding the knuckle to the lower control arm. It will save you from having to hammer so much and fight with sliding the knuckle off the strut. The reason it's so difficult in this video is the axle and lower control arm are still connected. And as the lower the knuckle slides off the bottom of the strut tube the parts start to wedge into each other. If you disconnect the axle and lower control arm first then the knuckle can slide down off the strut tube with no other force being applied to it from the side and such.

I agree with you. As a mechanic i do the little extra work to make the job easier, not have a difficulty removing or replacing parts. I know mechanics that remove little as possible but they have suuuuch a hard time. But they do create good times when you are with your friends.

@@kevinsmobileautomotiverepair completely understandable. I work in fleet maintenance, so time is money. And sometimes that works. But when removing less makes a job take longer and be more difficult, that makes no "cents". LoL

Easy to do with all connected, turn the knuckle while jacking the arm and it slips on.

For anyone doing this job, you need to wedge a chisel up the crack of the knuckle, that will widen the hole and the big black shock just slides right in and out. Turn the wheel to one side where you can wedge it in, very simple. No need to remove knuckle or axle nut or anything.

Big Thanks for this video from Michigan in 2024! Honestly you made it look a lot easier than it is. For anyone else out there, I got lucky and had a big flat head screwdriver that was just wide enough to drive between the pinch to open it up more so the new strut would slide down in a little easier. Was also a pain to get the old one off. The document I found online said the pinch bolt should be tightened to 60 ft pounds and discard the old bolt ! Well I didn't have a new bolt, so oh well. Got er done. The mechanic wanted to charge me $1200, autozone had a pair of struts for $360, good old internet amazon/rock auto has them for $140 for the pair.

@@kevinsmobileautomotiverepair Awesome yeah, wasn't the easiest job and so a big (f)thank -you to the engineers at ford :) for that design. I think I got lucky with my screwdriver being just the right width as opening up the pinch slightly really helped out, along with this great video. Awesome to get my lady's car back on the road at a decent cost!

You forgot to mention that the strut has a “lip” by the back of it where it has a guide which need to “slot” in the knuckle where the pinch bolts meet… that’s for steering alignment. Idk If I missed that on the video because I did skip a small part near the beginning.

The pinch area is that slot so you should not be able to fully seat it unless it's lined up.

@kevinsmobileautomotiverepair this is by far the hardest part. What's most interesting is that having done countless Mazdas with the same design. The strut slides right out once the pinch bolt is removed, and also slides right in. Sometimes it requires a little banging, but no where near as much, and no need to wedge open the pinch bolt area on the spindle/knuckle. Then, the alignment is super easy and there is a safety hook on the end of the much longer and improved guide. If the pinch bolt comes loose, the hook protects it from coming apart. The control arm is also much easier because the 2 nuts are welded into the control arm instead of being loose nuts you have to put a wrench on. Mazda just gets the whole Ford design perfected. Must be tighter tollerances, more accurate manufacturing & design. Mazda is what Ford aspires to be in execution, but Ford is what Mazda aspires to be in creating successful products that people want and are willing to buy.

I understand this is a roadside repair, but if you have jacked the driver side up, you would be able to wiggle the passenger side knuckle a lot easier because you will not be fighting the driver’s side tire that’s on the ground.
@kevinsmobileautomotiverepair
@kevinsmobileautomotiverepair 4 ай бұрын
If your referring to the sway bar link that would be the only item that is connected from one side to the other as far as suspension. and both sides were up already so no log on the sway bar.
@dekunp
@dekunp 4 ай бұрын
@@kevinsmobileautomotiverepair not the sway bar, but the two front wheels connected through the steering rack. Around 9:40 when you had to rotate the steering wheel to turn the steering knuckle was when I realized you still had the front driver side tire on the ground, because the front tire was rubbing as you turned the wheel. If you had left the key in the ignition, jacked both front wheels off the ground from the get go, then you could have turned the passenger side steering knuckle by hand, which also meant you could wiggle it off.

i never saw you do that. And, if you had, then the strut would have slid right out like butter with no hammering AT ALL. Also, it slides right back in like butter too. Maybe you aren't understanding what @cofty is saying- it's this: If you put the pinch bolt in backwards (from the other side) with a thin piece of steel in the slit and then tighten the bolt, it will open the pinch area as wide as you want and the strut will slide right out and in by hand- no hammering at all.

@@darthgreater7054 One word of caution though. I got too greedy with the bolt and it opened the clamp far enough that it was difficult to relocate the bolt without the danger of cross-threading. It took a bit of fettling to get them lined up again. It is a really useful tip but just need to be cautious
