How to Replace: Lower Ball Joint on 2013 Honda Crosstour

Replacing the lower ball joint on a 2013 Honda Crosstour EX-L V6 4WD.
This information may apply to other Crosstour years.
We decided to replace the lower ball joint on our Crosstour because we started to get a clunking sound as we drove over bumps or dips, even pulling in and out of our driveway. We also started to get a squealing and creaking sound when we turned, which is another indicator of a bad ball joint.
Specialty Tools:
- Ball Joint Press
- OTC 6653 Press Adapter Kit
- Pickle Fork
- Rubber & Steel Hammer
- 36mm Socket
- Torque Wrench
- Breaker Bar / Impact Wrench
Torque Specs:
33-38 ft/lbs --- Upper Ball Joint
58-65 ft/lbs --- Lower Ball Joint
40 ft/lbs --- Tie Rod
242 ft/lbs --- Axle Nut
37 ft/lbs --- Brake Caliper
80 ft/lbs --- Brake Caliper Bracket
80 ft/lbs --- Lug Nuts
We wanted to share our experience with replacing this part because we love our car, and there is just not enough information out there about the Crosstour. We did purchase a Haynes manual in hopes that it might help us along; however, they recommend taking the car to professionals - but, we have the tools and the ability to do it ourselves! Of course, if you don’t have the tools or experience, we also suggest taking it to a professional to replace.

I'm about to replace my lower ball joint for the second time only I put a new knuckle on then did the control arms and fucked up the ball joint again. Lol I beat out my last ball joint with a galvanized steel pipe and a hammer. It was brutal

I like your style. Well done. Just a couple of comments. If you have a 6 or 9 inch bungy strap, you can use it to hang the caliper from the coilover spring instead of the zip tie. I have the Honda ball joint removal tool but you can get a similar one fat Harbor Freight for about $20. It makes child-work out of popping the ball joints. If you are small and old like me (123 lbs, 78-years-old), it helps to also pull the brake disk early in the process so that you don't have to screw with that 30 lbs of stuff while you are pulling and pressing the ball joint.

Thanks for the video! It helped a lot to replace the front ball joint on a 2014 Accord. There's no upper ball joint on this version of the accord, just a pinch connection on the strut, but everything else was the same. I chose to do the work in place so I left the knuckle attached to the strut. A little awkward at times, but sometimes it gave the needed leverage to get some parts out. One comment that may help Honda owners, the ball joint kits that only have three rings may not fit properly in the knuckle to pop the ball joint out. Fortunately, I had an old hole saw that was the perfect diameter. The ideal size would be 51mm ID and 53mm OD. Otherwise you need a ring with a cutout.
