This seems easier than expected. Don’t even have to take the tires off. My 07’ has around 160K miles with original suspension and I got quoted $1200 for new shocks in the rear and shocks and struts on the front. It’s around $200 for parts from Rock Auto. Can save myself a chunk of money. Do you have a video showing the front strut/shock assembly replacement? I know it’s a little more involved. Great stuff.

I've been sitting out in my garage for a few minutes trying to figure out how to get the top nut off after you run out of space to grab the tab with an adjustable wrench. I've also been wondering which order the washers and rubber spacers go. I knew exactly where to look. Thanks so much. Thanks for telling the torque specs too.

For these rear shocks no jack should be required! You also can compress the shocks quite easily and safely under your own strength.

A heads up for anyone doing this at home (at least with the 4600s, which are nearly identical). I couldn't get both new bushings to fit--when installed according to Bilstein's instructions and other net sources, I couldn't access the threads above the frame at all. I had to re-use the bushing that goes below the frame--it has a plug (the one pictured in the instructions) that seats up into the frame's hole. I could only use 2 of the 3 washers. This setup gives the exact same exposed thread as the originals (stocks) though.

Just finished mine yesterday in my garage. Three washers + two bushings fit in. The only thing I was doing differently was jacking up right underneath the pumpkin, removing the old shocks, putting in the new one and slightly tighten the upper position. At this time, drop the pumpkin with flooring jack and then slide in bottom and lock it into place. Then tightening all bolts and raise the pumpkin back up. Otherwise I couldn't use my own strength to squeeze in for the bottom position. I also noticed that the order for washers set up I did was slightly different than him. I had thick silver washer + bushing + thin silver washer for lower portion; and then bushing + thick blackish washer + nut for upper portion. Pretty much copy from the OEM set up.

Awesome video, and awesome channel altogether! I like the setup with the 5100's... I'm about to be that guy and ask the question... What's the biggest (within reason) wheel tire setup you'd be willing to go with this? I want to run the TRD Pro 4runner wheels and a 33" tire but honestly have no idea which direction to go to achieve it. Keep up the awesome content!
@teamoildrop
@teamoildrop Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Keep in mind that you get no lift in the rear from the 5100 shocks. They are simply just quality shock replacements. The front can be adjusted up to 2.5”. With that being said, if you raise the front to level with the rear I personally think 265/70R17 look best and have zero rub (you can see in my other video) however that’s not quite 33” tires. I’m running 4Runner rims in that video too and the offset is in your favor. You MIGHT be able to achieve zero rub on those rims with true 33” and a 1.5” lift in the front but I cannot say for sure… finally, not every “33” tire is a true 33”. Just another factor to consider. TacomaWorld.com is your best friend here. Good luck!

Yes sir looks great, looking to do the same. Yes staying humble with a light lift. Its a commuter/ Lowes runner, 0 offroad. 2WD long bed. Which blocks did you use for the rear? I'll keep my stock 16's and up the tire size later on once they've worn out. Personally not a fan of the front with or without the lower plastic valence. Too long, then removed its too bare. I custom cut it and trimmed it real nice. Looks good, looks factory. Thanks for the help

@teamoildrop
@teamoildrop Жыл бұрын
It’s not so much about the miles and way more about the feel. If you are bouncing after bumps or leaning away from cornering or dipping while braking it’s probably time. With that being said, pavement only drivers can easily get 100k out of factory shocks while off-roaders might cut that in half.
