Yesterday morning my mirror just flew off mid drive to the gym! I have a VW Tiguan and auto zone wanted to charge $60 just for the mirror! I don’t even want to know what VW would charge. I bought a mirror on Amazon for $16 and am using your double sided tape technique and attaching it myself. Thank you for post this tutorial!

Popsicle sticks can help with gapping the mirror plate from the edges of the rest of the mirror assembly. Toothpicks in certain spots too. Pull them out once the mirror is affixed in correct alignment on backing plate.

The same thing happened to my Jetta 4 or 5 years ago. I used some type of glue, I don't remember what type though. Then I cut some cardboard to put against the mirror and wrapped tape around the face of the mirror where the cardboard was and the back of the mirror housing overnight. It's still working today. Sometimes I even see the outline of the glue when I put the heated mirror on. lol

Thank you for this excellent explanation of how to fix the shattered mirror (how the whole thing didn't break God knows) that happened when I brushed against a bush on the passenger side, well, I did think it was a funny-looking bush because there was no parking spaces open at the thrift shop. I did hear something scratch the side of the car (apparently it wasn't a bush but a funny looking tree!) but someone pulled out and I just went in and forgot about it. It wasn't until I got home that I even noticed it backing into the garage! Hey, what happened to my mirror? Oh...I didn't want to go anywhere, cost too much and I found you! I ordered the mirror online, I liked the part of the blue tape to attach it, I thought that was really clever! I used the 2 sided tape also-still sticking after 2 months and a few incidents :). I'm 70 years old and a granny...my brother was quite impressed! Thank you, my dear, for helping me with this! I wish we had internet with all the other 'small' accidents (incidents) I had throughout the years!! God bless you giving you such a great talent and speech. joan :)

Easy to assemble, good strong materials, feels good, looks good.

Tried using loc tite epoxy. Worked for about a week or two. Now it’s starting to vibrate again. I’m sure the -15°f doesn’t help, but it was fully bonded when re installed. Might have to try the tape method.

Instead of painter's tape to hold the mirror glass with when mounting it to the backing plate, why not use 2 small flexible plastic suction cup mounts used for mounting objects to glass or smooth surfaces? Once the glass is re-mounted, the suction cups can simply be peeled from the mirror glass and the job is done. Suction cup mounts can likely be found at your local dollar store.
