Just what I needed to refresh my memory of what I did about 6 yrs ago. Thank you Toyota Maintenance for posting this super helpful video. My 2001 Tacoma 2.4L (240K miles) is running great after installing new spark plugs (with your help!). I can tell by your voice and manner that you are a good person and an honest mechanic. How lucky your family, friends, and customers are Keep up the good work. :)

Absolutely fantastic video good sir. I was having trouble figuring out how that air-box portion was attached to the heat shield. Furthermore I was having great difficulty finding a video of a 2.4L 4 cylinder Tacoma (my truck is a 2004). Thank you for this video, I wish other instructional mechanic videos were as articulate and clear as yours.

Have a single cab Tacoma and went to get an inspection and what do you know there was a misfire code but no check engine light, they suggested replacing all four spark plugs and here I am watching and I must say this video was perfect!

I have a check engine light on , on my 2008 Toyota Tacoma 2.7 L4 cylinder .When I replace all 4 spark plugs I'm hoping the light will go off. Just wondering if you replaced your plugs and got another inspection? Mine could be the 2nd air intact valve and I really don't want to replace it, 300 to 500 dollars if a mechanic does it.

Helpful Tip for Everyone: Buy the spark plug tube seals and also a new valve cover gasket even if you are 100% sure you don't need it. Why? I recently changed out my spark plugs and 2 of the 4 were drenched in oil. Had I known this, I would have bought everything up front and performed all of the work at once, but, because I didn't know, now I have to take everything apart again just to get things done right. WORST CASE scenario, if you have no leaks, return what you bought. Simple as that. Will save you lots of time and rework. Just my advice/thought.

Yep went through the same thing when I did mine. In fact I would have bought my gaskets on RockAuto if I'd known but instead I had to run to a parts store in the next city and spend close to $120 when I could have gotten them less than half the price online

Thank you.... Every time I do something to my old truck I have to rewatch videos.... Little things like understanding that the two nuts are under the air intake saves me an hour of pouting trying to figure out why I can't get a part lose.... ;-)

I always apply Dielectric Tune-up grease for spark plug boot. It prevents voltage loss and arcing and protects from moisture, salt, dirt and corrosion.Prevents fusing and tearing of spark plug boots and provides high temperature lubrication on rubber, plastic and ceramic.

That was very clear and helpful. If I could ask a question: I have a 2004 tacoma with this engine. It's missing at lower revs (Under 2000 RPM) and under load (acceleration: Like it's firing on 2 or 3 cylinders, instead of 4), If I lay off the gas and gently feather it, I can get it to run on all 4 cylinders. Spark plugs and coils were recommended to me to replace by a friend. Anywhere else I should also look? Thanks in advance.

Not sure if you fixed your issue, but for anyone who is experiencing this problem or will in the future.. it could also be your injectors, run some lucas fuel treatment thru your gas tank. Also check your fuel pump, may be time to get it switched out.

If you can't get the spark plugs out use one of the coils to pull them out. And always have a dust cover over the open spark plug holes. You never know what tricks fortuna will play.

Informative video. That truck is a 2003 or 2004 though, not a 2002. Those are the only model years which had the vertical grill....all the others had horizontal grills.

Incorrect. The vertical grill slats ran 2001-2004.
