This is a step by step instructional video on how to replace the spider gears inside a Ford 7.5 & 8.8 open differential. While I’m working on a ’98 Ford Mustang, this video applies to many Ford models & years since these rear ends have been in use for decades.
I show many tips & tricks to make this job quick, easy & painless. The actual labor part of this job takes about two hours. If you use RTV for the differential cover gasket then you’ll have to wait 12 to 24 hours for it to properly cure before adding fluid. There are gaskets available at most auto parts stores that work very well too that don’t have a wait time.

Simple and to the point, not full of a 10 minute speech on the backstory of how the vehicle got to this point, where I bought the parts, why my dog is barking, what I had for breakfast, how I like my new tool….bla bla. Thx

The best video I’ve seen on the spider gear swap. So easy, but not easy unless you’ve watched this video on how to rotate those spider gears in and keeping everything in place for center pin. Thank You!

Extremely helpful ... Thanks a ton! I wasn't planning on touching the spider gears in my 2007 V6 Mustang when I upgraded to the GT500 rear brakes but I found a leaky axle seal and the spider gears fell out when I went to reinstall the big pin in the differential. After 30 minutes of "I almost got the &%a0a$ spider gears lined up that time", I took a break and found your clear and explicit instructions. Well done! Thanks to you I was back on track in less than 3 minutes.

ok i know my rear end is going out only one wheel turns but, now the side that doesn't turn the brakes are grinding against the rotor! so my question is will this be fixed once i fix the rear end or is this something else causing this!? they have brand new brakes in the back
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 8 жыл бұрын
Gekkou Raion, the brakes shouldn’t be touching the rotor with enough force to prevent the rotor from spinning if the brake pedal and emergency/parking brake is not set. Something is going on there that is likely independent of the differential issue. I’d take the caliper & rotor off and see if both wheels rotate when the rear is off the ground. Good luck...

I intended on repairing a seal and axle bearing, but now I'm wondering if I should go ahead and put new spider gears in while I have it apart. It is a 96 Ranger with a bunch of miles. It did appear doable from your video, though I know "looks are deceiving."

If the spider gears are loose or worn then definitely replace them. They aren't a normal maintenance item. So, in my opinion, if they aint broke, don't fix 'em. I never comment on videos but after watching I have to say one of the best how to videos I have ever seen on youtube. My wife has a 2001 Mustang is it pretty much the same as the 98? She has a leak on the right rear seal and I noticed lot of play In the axle so it is probably due for some new gears also. Thank you again for the video I will share and watch all of your videos.
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 8 жыл бұрын
+Stephen StephenB, Yes, your wife's '01 is pretty much the same as my wife's '98 (in terms of the differential). I wouldn't condemn the gears before pulling the diff cover and having a look inside. The play could be due to a lot of things, including but not limited to, bad driveshaft u-joints. Good luck...

Great video. You didn't clarify in the video, so someone may do unnecessary work, but you don't need to remove the spider gears if all you are doing is removing the axle shafts. I always just leave them in place.
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 6 жыл бұрын
True, if you have a center pin with a cut out in the middle like the aftermarket one I installed in this video you can just rotate the center pin to give clearance for the axle shafts to be pushed in etc. However, if your center pin does not have the cut out, like the stock one I replaced on this car, you have to remove the center pin. At which point it is super easy for the spider gears to fall out and potentially get damaged if they fall out of the diff & bounce around on your garage floor. So it's often easier/safer to remove them in this case. But go with whichever method works for you.

Very good video thank you for the little tricks. I have 1992 ford ranger with drum brakes on the rear I’m curious what you think about me using a donor mustang for a disc brake conversion??
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 4 жыл бұрын
Not all 8.8's & 7.5 diffs are the same. While the center part with the gears is the same, the axle tubes and suspension mounting brackets can be different. It all depended on the car it was installed on. Mustangs have a 4-link suspension. I don't know what style Rangers have. If it's a 4-link then it should bolt right up assuming the axle tubes are the same lengths as your stock axle tubes. There are tons of other model cars & trucks that came with 7.5 & 8.8 diffs. So, yes you could find a donor car and convert to disc brakes. However, you need to make sure that the axle tubes lengths and the mounting brackets are the same as on your truck. If the mounting brackets are different you could pay a shop to weld up new brackets for you. But its easier/better to find a diff with the correct brackets already installed. Hope that helps & good luck.

hey man thank you so much for the awesome videos. I'm changing the axle bearings on my 8.8 98 Cobra this week, and the instructions are very adamant about not damaging the spider gears when rotating the differential to expose the axle c-clips. in your video you say they just slide out when rotating it - this concerns me lol. what's the best way to rotate everything with the pin out to expose the c-clips without damaging anything? thank you so much in advance
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage Жыл бұрын
I think the damage they may be referring to is if the spider gears fall out and bang around on the floor. If the gears remain in the carrier then there should be no damage to them. When you get it apart it might make more sense. After rotating the carrier a little, with the pin out, you will see that the spider gears didn't rotate with the carrier. When this happens, just manually & slowly rotate one of the tires to rotate the spider gears back into position. Make sure to rotate the tire while you are watching the gears so you don't rotate it the wrong direction. If you are super worried about the spider gears coming out you could run some zip-ties through the holes in the carrier that the pin goes through & the center of the spider gears to hold the spider gears in place. Basically putting zip ties where the pin was going. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Hey I had a question. But first thank you for the informative video it’s literally a Godsent. So! I have a 2000 v6 mustang I was wondering if 7.5 rear ends had axle vents. I know 8.8s do so I went to research for 7.5 vents but found zero information on them for my generation mustang. On the right side of my 7.5 axle I see what looks to be a vent but I’m not sure, very rusted looking and has no play like a vent should. So would you know if we do have axle vents? Thank you very much
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, 7.5 diffs have an axle vent on the passenger side of the diff. Specifically on the "top" of the axle tube. The diff in this video is a 7.5", btw. I too couldn't find a vent specific to 7.5, but the one I did find for the 8.8 on AmericanMuscle.com looks a like the one on my 7.5 diff. Its likely the same part. I'd suspect it would be available at most auto parts stores. You might need to specify 8.8 diff if they don't have one specific to 7.5. Next best option is a junk yard. Good luck.

great video thank you. like some commenters i was just doing wheel bearings and seals and my spider gears fell down. tried and tried to get them in. can only get the spider gears back in without the washer, but cant seem to "slip" the washers behind them. looks like i might pull the whole carrier out and assemble on the bench, idk. working on a 2011 f150 with the 9.75 open diff if that makes a difference. thanks for the info.
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 2 жыл бұрын
The washer has a lip that centers it on the spider gear, so you have to install the spider gear & washer together otherwise you'll never get the washer in place. Unless you don't have room to work under your truck, which I think you would have way more then I did under this Mustang, pulling the carrier is a little overkill and could open up a can of worms you don't want to mess with. Its unclear from your comment on if you tried the technique I demonstrate in this video to get the gears back together. If you haven't, I would give it a shot. The gears & washers fit in there before so they should fit back in again (assuming the gear & washer isn't damaged from falling out). Good luck.

@@petrocksgarage finally just got it, took the whole thing out the pumpkin got everything lined up then pushed the main gears apart to get enough room to slide spider gears washer in then was able to rotate and all back together finally haha woohoo bit of a pain. question, about the rubber O rings on the inside of the left and right shafts. does it ride to the outside of the clips towards the splines or on the inside towards the center of the car?
@petrocksgarage

I’m not sure it matters. But on my case they were towards the center of the car on both axels.

Was the play in the axels the reason for replacing the spider gears (guts)? Had a shop swap gears 2.73 to 3.73’s on 92 lx and noticed vibrations on the highway when reaching speeds of 70 and above. Would this application fix this issue or would I need need a complete swap (ring and pinion). Thanks for the tutorial, I will be attempting this in a few weeks.
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, the play in the axles and the diff needing a fluid change is why I investigated. Its doubtful spider gears would cause your problem. Lots of things can cause a speed specific vibration. I'd start with the simple stuff, like unbalanced wheel, tires or drive shaft. Good luck.

Hey Pete my mustang differential fluid ran dry because i had a slow leak an my rear end went out it will still move back an forth when its in gear but has a dragging sound.....now if i perform what u did in the video would that fix it??
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage 8 жыл бұрын
+true wholesaleing, its Pet Rock, not Pete. it is hard to say what your noise is, especially from my keyboard without having seen the condition of your differential. The sound could be any number of things. Most likely you fried one or more bearings, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you also put a lot of wear into the gears (not just the spider gears). I’d recommend taking it to a differential shop and have them take a look. You likely need a new diff or a rebuild. Good luck...

Those pins can sometimes be a P.I.T.A. to remove. Sounds like your diff is a limited slip diff (via the clutch packs) which is slightly different then an open diff like the one in this video. But they are similar enough that you can get the gist of it. Glad to hear you got it done and that my video helped you out.

Have a dana 80 open diff. Both wheels are rolling as one. Was told the spiders seized themselves to the center pin. This is on a 99 3500hd . Trying to get more information before I buy a spider replacement set. Can't seem to find info online.
@petrocksgarage
@petrocksgarage Жыл бұрын
If you hold one wheel in place, can you spin the other? If so, then the gears are not seized and you likely have a limited slip differential instead of an Open differential. If you can't spin the other wheel, then they could be seized/welded or a locker has been installed. Only real way to know what is going on is to remove the cover and have a peak inside. Good luck.
