Just did this job. There doesn't appear to be any advantage in removing the tie rod. Check for play in the sway bar as it a great time to replace it if you're getting clunking. There is a bulletin on this.

thanks for the video. I didn't know that I could buy the complete assembly without having to deal with the 700 pound spring compression problem. You saved me from buying a coil compressor and scraped knuckles.

Thank you very much for this video. It saved me a lot of time and money. One note - I had to disconnect the front sway bar on my 2002 Focus on both sides in order to get it out of the way of the lower control arm enough to swing out of the way enough to get the strut out.

It should be noted that if the #30 torx bit strips out inside the bolt centre, you can use a 13MM wrench on the nut, and another larger(I think 16MM) wrench on the back side. Between the stabilizer arm and the mounting bracket. It will hold the stud from turning as well.

Mike, I first want to thank you for your exceptional demonstrations. I was able to get my strut off without removing the tie rod end or control arm bolt. I tapped with a copper hammer until I came loose, is this ok? Thanks

If the spring is broke you should be able to see it inside of the wheel well.

1A Auto Parts Hi! I got a 2001 Ford Mondeo FWD, station wagon, 1.8 l (european version). I just replaced the struts and springs on one of the sides, Im doing the other side tomorrow. With new spring/strut the car is smooth on bumps again, but when accelerating when exceeding 40 mph I get ALOT of vibrations from the wheels that wasnt there prior to the new parts. What might the reason for this be? I only get it when accelerating, If Im at 60 mph and take my foot of the gas pedal its not there. Did I not get the CV joint/drive axle in the right grooves when putting it back together perhaps....?

With the car in the air you could try to pry on the control arm with a pry bar to see if that works. It should be the same procedure as shown in the video. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

The car may sag on one side, or you may experiance a harsh ride on one side of the car.

great thanks for showing us .ive watched a few of these but when everything back together nobody recommends get your tracking done ,which would be wise since you've completely disturbed suspension and steering .

You should be fine as long as everything comes back together. Either way the car will have to be aligned when you are finished.

If you remove the tie-rod end be careful putting it back the video sounds like 55 ft-lbs but the spec is 35 ft-lbs(for a 2003 at least)

Are strut bearing failures common on the Focus? I suspect I have that problem on my '05. I've got clunking noises from the RF in parking lot type maneuvers. Car only has 93k, and the struts are fine, I also do not believe the spring is broken, so I don't want to buy a a brand new pair. I'd rather get a bearing plate and some struts spring compressors and disassemble the problem strut assembly. Thoughts?

In this video you are torquing the tie rods to 55 foot pounds but in your (1A) other Ford Focus videos the tie rods are being torqued to 35 foot pounds

i had trouble getting to lower part of the strut back into the steering knuckle completely. The more i jack it up, the more my car goes up but not the strut into the steering knuckle.

How did you get in back in...I been trying for like 3 hours to get in back in....I took the old one out in 5 mins lol but cant get the new one back in...it goes in like half an inch then just stops

So when I separated the strut from the knuckle, the cv joint came off too, nothing is broken, is that normal?? I can snap it back in, but I just want to know if that could be a problem, Thanks 1A Auto Parts!!

What was the symptom that lead to finding a broken spring? Did the car start bouncing or something? Cause that spring - although it was broken - had rust on the ends - which leads me to think that it was broken for a while. Just curious is all - never lost a spring on a vehicle.

Usually the cars are badged as such. If you're not sure,you can have the dealer run your VIN # and they can tell you. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

If the spring is not broken do you need to compress it before you start this procedure, or is that something you do after you have the assembly out? Assuming I've got a strut that came without a spring and I want to put re-use the old springs.

Turns out there was no way to compress it while the strut was in the car. But I did it once the strut was out, before taking the top of the strut off.
