►If you're finding oil spots underneath your Mercedes-Benz, don't panic-it's probably not from your valve covers or oil pan. It's most likely your oil cooler gasket that is extremely easy to replace.
The M272/M273 engine is unique in the fact that it doesn't really suffer from valve cover leaks like a lot of other engines. Instead, what can appear to be a valve cover leak or even an upper oil pan leak, is usually the oil cooler gasket. You will typically find these leaks toward the left-hand side of the car/engine.
One way to check for the leak is to look for dirt on the oil filter seam. From there, oil trickles down toward the driver's side of the car. If you let the leak progress even further, you will start to notice dirt and oil on the serpentine belt tensioner.

I did this job about a year ago and now the oil filter housing gasket is leaking. They tend to go around the same time. My advise is to remove the oil filter housing and change both gaskets at the same time. I believe that job may be easier than this one because it does not require removing the p/s reservoir etc. Also, you can replace the thermostat at the same time so killing three birds with one stone.
@jedfehrenbach9470

I also replace the P/S reservoir o-ring when I do these three things to make it a fourth bird. That one tends to start leaking about as often, at least on my engine. And while you're at it, there might even be other things to replace, like a belt tensioner, so give everything an inspection.

I saw one a forum someone recommending to replace the housing and cooler when doing this job because they warp over time and cause the leak. Do you think that would be overkill? Mine just started to leak. Can't really tell if its just the cooler or the housing but I was gonna do both anyway.

As a youngster (like you are) I did lots of DIY maintenance on the lively, enjoyable Alfasuds I then owned. Now I'm beyond 60 years and prefer someone with your type of competence and experience to work on my non-update E350 / M272. I use a great specialist shop who have shown me evidence of their competence to tackle jobs like that awful balance shaft replacement which requires engine removal, etc. However, I'm making notes during your W211 presentations to remind me of jobs I should ask them about and the products you recommend. As has been mentioned by @ReMark, replace the entire oil cooler assembly or replace all of the gaskets. When you buy the oil cooler assembly you get the assembly, gaskets and an oil filter. The job does require you to drain the coolant and the oil. If your car is ageing, it's also time to replace the thermostat, belt, idler pulley and belt tensioner. Replacing the oil cooler requires removal of all of these parts anyway. It's easier than fiddling with the power steering reservoir and all of the gaskets should be changed at the same time or you will have to return to do the job again for the gaskets you didn't replace.

A large part of why I finally switched from Acura to Mercedes is because of fcp. Had tons of homework to do, & you guys consistently had exact info available that I needed (also on e90/e92's). Just noticed this leak on my c207 & feel good about getting into it this weekend. I can't rebuild an Acura transmission, or rebuild a $2,000 vsa modulator but I can handle some fluid drains & gasket replacements. Also, looks like I only need to remove my belt & hose connecting thermostat to radiator. Cam sensor (I believe) is more obstructing than my power steering res. M272.988 3.5L. Thank you!! Respect!!

@@fcpeuro I had this happen on a family member's 211 without an external oil leak from the oil cooler. When I went to replace a leaking cam phaser seal I had to remove the oil cooler and found the gasket disintegrated slightly, and connected that with the red particles I saw in the coolant expansion tank. I thought it might be an incompatibility with the coolant the body shop put in there... Needless to say it has MB blue in it now and has been fine since.

Good video ,,,just to let you know ,,this job can be done without removing the power steering reservoir and the coolant reservoir , which saves a lot of time and trouble. Simply use a small diameter wobble extension with a T30 socket bit.. you need to remove the p/steering reservoir cap to get clearance to access to one bolt. Use a magnet to pull the bolt out ,,,and use gum or blue tac to hold the bolt when replacing it. Although it is good to see how to remove the other things as well.

I'm getting a similar slight oil smell after I drive on my W212 2014 E350 4Matic Sport. Shouldn't it be the same, due to the use of the same V6 with more power. Unless they changed the "plastic" seals? What about using AT-205 Seal? I'm sure the gaskets hasn't been replaced in 70K miles, although it has been very well maintained with proper A+B services. B service just a month ago. (It also concerns me when one of the most reputable Mercedes Service centers doesn't reset the service computer after a B Service. All fluids, filters and oil was serviced) To sum up: My Lexus ES350 doesn't have any smell whatsoever after driving .. I was wondering if the Mercedes E350 oil smell is just age and common? It smells like oil/mixed with brake dust. (Description) Just wondering if that is just typical from this engine?

Great video. Do you have any video on how to replace an oil cooler gasket on a 2014 CLA250 Sedan? I greatly appreciate if you do. My situation is that there's an oil leak from my CLA250, and oil is going to the coolant reservoir. I never had this issue since I bought the car in 2014. Only three weeks ago I brought the car to get the coolant reservoir replaced and got the front brake pads replaced for a total of $2800. I didn't drive the car for one week because I went on vacation. But when I returned home and drove the car, I can clearly see the oil leak mark on the driveway. I asked the mechanic who did the work, and he diagnosed it as a blown head gasket, and that I shouldn't be driving the car because "it's dangerous". It felt suspicious at that point. I told him straight up that I am not paying $8,000.00 for another job. I searched the internet for "how to replace an oil cooler gasket on a 2014 CLA250 Sedan" to no avail. Thank you in advance for your response. My location is Pacifica, California, USA. GOD bless and thank you to anyone with a good heart and an honest character who'll respond to this.

Hey there pbcone! With your M270 engine, there is a real possibility that there could be an issue of coolant mixing with the engine oil due to a head gasket issue. The first thing we'd recommend would always be anything that can 100% confirm a diagnosis; there are a ton of inexpensive at-home tricks you can use to test for a bad head gasket, from color-changing paper test kits that aim to detect exhaust gasses in the coolant reservoir, to similar combustion leak detector kits. If those can verify your head gasket issue, you'd at least have a compass. The engine oil filter housing may be worth investigating, and isn't too tricky to get to. However, I'd also keep the transmission cooler in mind as a slightly less-obvious option. There's a cooler mounted on the filter housing for your DCT, and if the internal seal has failed for this, it could be your source of oil and coolant mixture. If you haven't noticed any engine oil decrease, I'd look into this. For reference and if this is your issue, the replacement transmission cooler is 2465010501. The seal is 0229977845 (and is one-time use, so any time the cooler is removed it must be replaced), and you'll also want two of 0229977945 to round out the reseal. The new housing/cooler combination should include a new filter, but if not, the filter is 2463772300 and the O-ring it uses to seal is 0229978045. The four bolts that hold the cooler to the transmission are torqued to 8nm. Make sure you keep in mind though, Mercedes recommends that the cooling system is drained to create minimal spillage when you disconnect the coolant lines from the cooler. You'll want some new coolant on-hand, and you'll also want to make sure you top off the transmission after a service. Again, double-checking to rule out the head gasket prior to another service is wise, but it may be a location worth investigating to remedy your leak! Let us know how it goes. Good luck!
