How To Replace The Starter Motor On A 2007-2013 MINI Cooper Base (R56) - Not Starting or Turning On?

In this video we install a new starter motor on a 2009 Mini Cooper 1.6 base. Might be similar for the S (turbo) model.
The method described in this video you don’t have to remove the intake manifold like other videos. In fact, I think you can get by without removing the intake box. But I did and it allowed a bit more room on the top bolt.
The trick to this method is the use of the two wobble extensions together giving you the right angle you need on that top bolt.
Tools Needed:
- Rubber gloves
- Safety glasses
- 13mm wrench
- 2x Wobble extensions
- E12 Torx
- 13mm socket
- 10mm socket
- T25 Torx
- Ratchet
- Flathead screwdriver
- Mirror
- Magnet
- Floor jack
- 2x jack stands
- Flashlight
Starter was $90 from ebay. Save $200-$300 in labor by doing it yourself.

The part number is the same for the Mini Cooper Countryman 2014-2016 and Mini Cooper Paceman 2013-2016 so these instructions MIGHT work too.

TIP For a 2010 S model clubman take off the pass front tire and pull the starter out that way. Super easy. No need to fight pulling it down.

Thank you so much for the posting, extremely helpful. Would not have been able to replace mine without this video. Those torque bolts were so nerve-racking, one wrong move and one can strip the head and you’re completely screwed. Had to be so careful. Why couldn’t they just put regular starter bolts in there like they did for one 13mm it has?!? SMH lol thanks again!

Pretty good video. Mine was a lot tougher to get out. I went from the top And I had one e12 (rear) and another e11 (front) bolts so be careful....the e12 fits and will even turn it but you could strip it if you're not careful. The starter might need a good wack to get it out also. The righting pins on mine were degraded a bit and made it pretty tough to move. I also had to disconnect two coolant hoses to see that 3rd boltr (the 13m)

Thank you! It's a wireless endoscope camera. About $20 on amazon. The particular brand I have is "NIDAGE." It connects through bluetooth to your phone.

Dont suppose you know if this is exactly the same as a mini one? 07 plate. Engine bay looks pretty similar. Think the solenoid is going, starts up fine the starter comes on by iit own and weird wurring noise all the time.

Is it on too tight? Adding extensions will give you more room.

He doesn't even try, the starter isn't activating! It's as if I have an activated mode that won't let me send it! As a maintenance mode or something similar.

Same problem my mini cooper D have l change battery l check all pins all good light radio Window all work but l think have problem with a starter because dosen crak nathing 0 ro thanks for the video was haed to film for u but now we know what to do thanks

Yeah, fuck that shit, taking it out from the bottom lol. I spent 10 minutes trying to yank it our from below. Gave up and pushed it uprlwards through the engine compartment. Took me 30 seconds that way.
