My CX-9 only has 66k miles and dealership says I need this done by next oil change. How can I tell if I really need to replace the tensioner? Great tutorial! I may just do this myself and save $400.

There can be a few different signs. If the belt is loose or squeaking/grinding it could be the tensioner. Mine was leaking fluid so I knew it was time or it would be very soon.

@@homemechanics3349 Leaking fluid for 3 years already maybe i should change it now. Me oem pulley lasted 45k miles sadly.

I couldn’t guarantee that a replacement wouldn’t fail eventually too, but the first one lasted over 100k miles.

So did you go through the wheel well at all? or just come up from under the car. Want to take off as least as many parts as possible on my Mazda 6.

yes, there is a special plastic cover. remove wheel, remove plastic, then you have access like on video. remember to secure car, when lifted, don't risk your health as some force will have to be used

Mine just had a 20k mile service and dealership told me I had to replace it😱 Tensioner is dirty like yours, but I really don't know bc there is dirt everywhere in there!

check for damper leaks and belt cracks. you can buy whole lart for 70$, i stead from Mazda. they use INA with Mazda logo

I also have this clatter noise whilst accelerating hard , I had a new Tensioner fitted 12k miles ago and I think this one sounds louder then the last that failed .
