Check around for a shop that will do it with the parts you provide. I bought the whole kit from OEM parts and saved about $500 on the job and also replaced the thermostadt at the same time--was included with the kid including the coolant too--gotta use special coolant and only DISTILLED water. Great video by the way!

I was nervous to tackle this job because I have heard you needed special tools to lock the cam and crank in place during the belt change. But after seeing you do this I now see this job is not really that big of a deal to do. But still looks like it would take many hours to complete. No worse than changing the timing chain on an old school V8, which I have done many times. THANKS for the video... I'm subscribed to this channel now!!!! keep up the good work!!!!

Looks pretty tough. I do have a Haynes manual too. Today is Thursday so maybe tomorrow I'll win the Megamillions and I won't have to do my own repairs. The jackpot is $32 million right now.

you can actually just get a bolt shrinker and if you cant find one of those you can just wrap it in aluminium foil and throw it in the microwave for 2 min on low and it will go back to its original state hope this helps have a nice day

Amazed that no one has commented in the fact that the motor mount bolt are stretch bolts are are not designed to be tightened twice.. Trust me its a pain when one breaks off flush with the block and you have to extract it

I didn't win the Megamillions so I later tried for the Superlotto and everything was perfect, the pot was at $9 Million, it was the 9th of November, and 3 squared is 9 so I bot a ticket but I didn't win. Now I'm taking the water pump off and it looks like some good tips at the end of this video.

You're welcome. The cam wheel at the top rotates once for every two times the bottom pulley (harmonic balancer) rotates once. So you could have the HB lined up and be off one pi radians on the cam wheel. (180 degrees)

Set the head on it's exhaust studs on your work bench so the valves don't get bent and install the cam and align the mark on the bench. You can take it back off for ease of install.

Just for anyone who cares, the TB tensionner on a 1.8 turbo consists of a hydraulic tensionner that you pull a pin on to release the tension. That bears on an excentric roller similar the one in the video but without the pin-holes. You can pre-tension it with a regular socket so you don't need the special tool and the hydraulic thing keeps it in pressing against the timing belt..

As far as my two cents I would not recommend buying a Bug. I drive one and have had several electrical issues. One that’s annoying is whenever it’s extremely hot outside you lose the electrical connection to your turn signals (Even after using silicon dielectric compound.) Also I’ve had several problems with the Anti-Theft unit going off and my dash acting funny. Before the Bug I drove a Ford escort ZX2 for 170,000 miles with very few problems my bug has 22,000 and has already been a big pain.

@Duitslond I like the $ I get from people clicking their ads. Beyond that if you have the money they look like a decent outfit for getting specific training quickly. Most tech's don't make HUGE money- so I'd recommend learning while being paid if possible and using the net to learn for free if you can. Otherwise you could end up with a pile of debt you don't want or blowing savings that may take years to rebuild.

You can use tapered pins from a hardware store and a screwdriver on the tensioner instead of the special spanner wrench. Ditto on the dumb design for the motor mount. The old VW Rabbits/Golfs had a much easier setup where you could change out the timing belt without touching the motor mount (though it was a PITA to remove the motor mount).

Brian - I have a small problem. My kids car stopped running (sheared teeth on a 2003 VW Jetta) I have the new parts. And chose to do the install myself. And here is my problem. I know where the timing mark in and the indicator is for the CAM but I do not know how to line up the Crank. I will assume the crank indicator is the small tab or dowel pin like entity that fits into the harmonic balance pulley how ever I do not know the exact location of that timing make. From what I can read, the # 1 piston needs to be TDC (top dead center) in the cylinder. But is this on the intake side or the exhaust side of the stroke? I want to make sure that its not 180 degrees off because I really could damage valves if they haven't already been damaged. The car died while pulling into a parking spot and not under a high RPM. Can you help me with locating the CRANK and the CAM?

Great video! I was wondering if someone could tell me if the 4 small bolts on the crank pulley are reverse thread or not. Having a hard time getting those off and wanted to check on the threading before I go to a more powerful impact gun. Also I am not seeing a mark that is supposed to be on the flywheel (Manual tranny) but i probably won't need that once I get that crank pulley off and can use that mark. Thanks!

I'm having trouble removing the harmonic balancer. The bolts are froze (unless they are reverse which I don't think is the case). But I've already stripped the hex out of one. Any suggestions? I've soaked them with penatrating oil already. Help. Also, is it necessary to fully remove the engine mount bracket or can you get the timing belt around it?

I'm currently doing a 99 2.0 beetle. I'm confused where alldata says to turn back the crankshaft slightly. Now the crankshaft marking is off a tooth, maybe a tooth and a half and I'm a bit worried I have no idea why they say to do this. I was happy just leaving the crankshaft the way it was I didn't move anything on the reinstall. I was thinking of putting it back in alignment was hoping you had any input. Thanks.

I understand that it's statistically improbable. I also understand what happened to Andrew Jackson when he went up against the bank as well as Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. If Ron Paul is willing to walk that path, the least we can do is support him. I have respect and admiration for him. I can't say that about the other candidates.
