The Lenovo Thinkpad T440s was released with the nigh unusable touchpad with integrated buttons, that was a complete disaster from a usability standpoint. Unsurprisingly the touchpad was replaced with a proper one in T450s which turns out to be compatible with the T440s. Should also work with T440p.
The laptop is now much more usable than it was before.
You can find the parts from for example trough the affiliate link below:

without cable: s.click.aliexp...

all those flatflex cables: the connector has a tab you have to FLIP UP so it unlocks properly. that's also how it must be when you want to reinsert the cable. after reinserting the cable, flip the tab down again.

Excellent video - exactly what I wanted to do. Let me share some shortcuts I found: 1. No need to remove the keyboard. I simply skipped this step and it made no difference. 2. Use a magic marker to mark the screw holes used by the back cover - before removing the mother board screws - so you do not accidentally try to put mobo screws in those holes. 3. No need to disconnect the internal battery. Just unscrew it and put it aside. 4. Was not able to undo the connector to the left of the internal battery (was afraid of breaking it) and, of course, the ribbon cable under it. So I kept them both connected and gently lifted the mobo and removed the 2 left screws with a short, thin screwdriver. 5. I did not replace the upper left trackpad screw because it is not necessary and will make removal easier later if ever needed. 6. As mentioned elsewhere my new T450 trackpad did not come with a ribbon cable. Was able to re-use the old one with no problem. 7. I did have some driver issues, but disabling the device and rebooting seems to have fixed it. Double tapping on the trackpad only works if you tap slowly.... Yes, I tried to adjust it in the control panel.... even with high sensitivity. Will try the driver recommended by George E. 8. No problems with the keyboard backlight.

Rule of thumb, always disconnect all power when opening up electronics. Why? Apart from your possible electrocution, in applicable situations, you may drop a screw, or inadvertently touch contacts or traces with your metallic tool. In this context, the laptop may be powered down, but there is power flowing through some rails, which means short circuits are a possibility if you drop a screw on two exposed terminals or whatever.

From my own experience, I can say that IT IS NECESSARY to remove the keyboard before loosening the motherboard. There are two ribbon cables connecting the keyboard and the motherboard, one is for the keys and the other one for the trackpoint. Otherwise, you may risk damaging one of those connectors or even both if you lift the motherboard to gain access to the touchpad screws. In my case, I accidentally removed the smaller ribbon cable while lifting the motherboard and later found my new touchpad without functioning trackpoint and trackpoint buttons. First I thought it is a driver or compatibility problem, but it was simply my laziness not to touch the keyboard ;-)

You might not need to change the touch pad. I was planning to replace the touch pad and this video convinced me that it was not going to be to hard. Great video, thank you.Thing is that after reading the comments I found out smth and changed my mind. One comment was that the factory touch pad works good by JustJoe76. That made me think of my only problem with the factory touch pad - right click- hard to do it without moving the mouse. Mouse moves when I do a right-click, 90% of the time, and the selected text for example, deselects, what a pain you have to select again and try slowly really slowly to right click it. Not any more. As of few minutes ago I thought to check touch pad properties. Guess what I found. You can right-click by clicking/tapping with 2-fingers. Try tapping with 2 fingers and if your right-click is improved, you might not need to change the touch pad at all. :)

Thanks for this. I just replaced the touchpad in my 440s and it makes all the difference in the world. I like that you messed up here and there, makes it all the more approachable to others.. I almost fucked up the holder of the flat cable of my new touchpad, which didn't come with its own cable. It was therefore slightly too long, but that shouldn't make whole lot of difference. Next project: replace the keyboard by a backlit one.

My t450s Touchpad came without the 90° degree ribbon cable. What i found out is: the ribbon cable connector on the t450s touchpad is a few mm lower (away from the keyboard). So I had to squeeze it in so it makes an S bend. Fortunatly in this place there is a little nitch in the casing so the ribbon cable doesn't kink. Anyway it works, so don't be concerned when your t450s touchpad comes without a ribbon cable.

CABLE/KINKS ! You will need a T450 Trackpad cable ! The original is too long and kinks. Most sell the trackpad without the cable, presuming you will use your old one (that does not fit PROPERLY !). The T450 cable/part no is 'DA30000EQ10'. The old trackpad cable is not only too long, but is it also just designed to work with the Non button version ? The T450 cable IS defo for the trackpad with the integrated buttons, so I suggest you use that cable as its the perfect fit! Someone on ebay does sell the pads with the correct cable for your laptop model for about £31. Or simply buy the trackpad & cable separate.

What's the story behind the "this is not a camera" sticker over the Lenovo logo
@Purkkaviritys
@Purkkaviritys 6 ай бұрын
I remember it being made because someone had put a camera in an Airbnb to spy on people and put a sticker on it, so some enterprising hackers printed a bunch more and distributed them during defcon 24 and they ended up on just about everything, especially things that obviously are not cameras. This is how I remember it, I might be wrong though on the origin.

Well, you aren't going to play games on this laptop as it only has Intel integrated graphics, however due to the power limitations that laptops have, a 4 year old laptop is still quite good for most tasks and this particular model can be acquired for cheap, but if you can get the T450s for a similar price, I would go for it instead as then you won't need to do this mod but if I remember correctly that machine comes default with no touch screen so if that is your thing, go for the T440s and do the touchpad mod as the original touchpad is atrocious. The fan noise isn't that bad tbh, you can hear it under heavy load but its not distracting in my opinion. That said the T440s is still my daily driver for linux use.

Thanks for the guide! I have put the T450s touchpad in my T440s and the touchpad works, but I can't use two finger gestures like scroll or right click in Windows 10, nor is there a menu for it. Anybody experiencing the same issue? I've found that manually installing the T540 touchpad driver on this machine gives the touchpad full functionality, but unfortunately Windows 10 keeps "updating" to the "correct" driver, which again corrupts two-finger gestures... also disabling Windows 10 automatic driver update didn't prevent this occurring. This driver works support.lenovo.com/de/de/downloads/ds101993 (it says it's for ThinkPad Yoga 15, but it works with the T450s touchpad in the T440s). To make it work first uninstall and delete all drivers for the touchpad from device manager (until it says PS2 compatible mouse in device manager). Then manually install the driver (that you unpacked before to a location on your hard drive by running the .exe and clicking install (which means unpack in Lenovo English) -> don't follow 'install now' after the install=unpacking part. When manually installing the driver, navigate to the unpacked folder on your disk and chose "Apfiltr.inf" in the Vi64 folder. Then click OK and pick "Alps Electric" => Model "ThinkPas UltraNav" . It will warn you. Ignore it. Done. Now smart windows will try to install a better driver for you on every update... which is worse and doesn't work. So we want to avoid that. So I edited group policy (which I think is not available in the home edition of windows). Run gpedit.msc . And follow this instruction www.howtogeek.com/263851/how-to-prevent-windows-from-automatically-updating-specific-drivers/ to prevent the update for this particular device. I hope somebody finds this helpful.

So, essentially, what you're saying is, that if I am having issues after completing the mouse upgrade, it's because I don't have a synaptics? I bought a 3 button touchpad on ebay (or somewhere), and I too am having the issues described above. I have both left and right click functionality, and my center button is acting as a scrolling button, but I really prefer the two finger gesture scroll function. You're telling me that if I follow your write up above I will keep everything I have now and I will achieve two finger gestures? You should make a video. Which files exactly do I delete? I feel a little apprehensive about that part. Afraid of screwing something up.
@george-rq8uy

@@th3frogman You don't have to delete any files. The device manager bit basically just tells Windows to not use certain drivers, which were associated with the device before. You may not need to remove the keyboard, that depends on how tight the keyboard ribbon cable gets, if you do remove it, be careful on how you press down the tabs with the flat head screw driver because I think I broke it while messing with those, you can see how ALT it mysteriously breaks between 6:18 and 6:28, its also possible that it was just broken before I started the modification and it was just the last straw that broke the tiny parts holding the key in.
