@@kathleenadams6421 make sure you put hondabond in the corners of the valve cover gasket. That’s where the oil will leak out and down the block and transmission. Hondabond works great and resists oil. I am doing my 04 now watching videos and seeing who missed the most important step 😂

Missed an important step. Put a dab of RTV sealant in the four corners of the camshaft, otherwise it will leak. You can see the old one had it 3:45 (beige color)

You don't recommend putting gasket sealer in the corners? At all four points were at humps over the timing belt and opposite side. it would be the inside Corners not outside? I recently changed my valve cover gasket and now I have a oil leak on the passenger side. I wish I would have seen this video before following somebody else's recommendations. I don't see what else could have caused it to leak.

The Honda official repair / maintenance manual states "Apply liquid gasket, part No. 08C70-K0234M, 08C70-K0334M or, 08C70-X0331S to the head cover gasket at the four corners of the recesses. NOTE: Do not install the parts if 5 minutes or more have elapsed since applying liquid gasket. Instead, reapply liquid gasket after removing old residue." This step was not mentioned in this video.

I had trouble getting new valve cover bolt gaskets/seals on the bolts (tore through 2 of them following a method on another video). I ended up boiling water in a mug, then dropping the seals in the hot water for a little bit of time to make them more pliable. Then I applied a little dish soap on the center. I put the bolt head in a vice so that the thread end was up and applied pressure to the gasket/seal, mostly to one side of the gasket/seal, to force it on at an angle and it was successful.

This video fails to mention that the coils that attach to the spark plugs also have rubber gaskets on them that most of the kits include gaskets for. They're very easy to change. Also, lining up the round gaskets for each sparkplug well is tricky and if you don't do it right, you can tear them.

The valve bolt gaskets were a pain in the butt. The metal washer wouldn't separate from the rubber. I used side cutters to cut as much rubber out, and ended using a ball-joint separator to push them out. Putting the new ones in were a breeze.

Question: In the 1996-2000 Civic Valve Cover Gasket Video, you used a 1-1/4" socket to smack the spark plug seals in with a rubber mallet. In this video you pushed the spark plug seals in by hand. I have a 2005 Civic EX and I just did mine, pushed in by hand. My question is: Am I okay leaving them pushed in by hand or should I have used a socket and rubber mallet?

Hello I truly appreciate your video and has given me the courage to try it out but i think i bite more than i could chew on this project. Anyway I have almost the same case as yours where a friend of mine asked me to help him with his valve covers gasket and inspection from the mechanic said he needed to change gasket and timing belt and water pump, well everything was going fine until the harmony balancer part. i was not able to break the nut and in the process happened to turn it clockwise instead of counter clockwise and so now wondering if it will line up at TDC. Also it had asked us to change both the coolant lines. Any ideas i am most appreciated. thank you

They go over this step so quickly in the video but it's REALLY HARD getting them on. I finally figured out the trick to it. You need to use your hands to press the ring up against the bevel on all sides evenly--if you keep pushing like that it will never go around, but here is the trick. When you have it pressing up against the bevel pick one side (wherever is easiest for you) to push harder on, then slowly move that extra pressure around in a circle until eventually the whole thing will make its way over the damn bevel. It's hard the first time but once you get it you'll be able to do all five. Basically you can only push it over in one location sufficiently at a time so moving clockwise around the thing will pull it over kinda like moving a key onto a keychain ring. . Best of luck.

Most likely, unless somehow another leak gets thrown up to those spots specifically, without leaving any traces or residue anywhere else, and gets into the ignition coil tubes UNDERNEATH the plastic caps. So basically, there's not a higher point under the hood from which oil could leak into there, which makes it near impossible that it's anything else. You can probably get the gasket set at an Autozone or something at a higher price if you don't want to wait. One of my coils is absolutely covered in oil, so I'm going to be doing that.

When I tried to reinstall the cover, the new plug seals kept the front of the cover up. I used the 90* pick to help seat the new seals around the spark plug tubes.

I needed to do this as well but I was afraid of accidentally puncturing the gasket with a pick. Fortunately, I was able to push the plug seals into place using a rubber glove and my finger.

Probably an aftermarket gasket. I had the same problem even with the sealer in the corners. Changed to OEM and no issues for a few years now.

having a problem removing the gaskets on the five screws. the rubber doesnt seperate from the metal shield.

+HyakuNiJuSan123 Thank you for watching. You will need a thin pick or flat headed object to pry away the gasket. After sitting in the vehicle for an extended period of time pressed in they tend to be tougher and almost mated with the cover. 1aauto.com

I may be mistaken, but as I see it the metal shield (shield is washer??? or cover) does not separate or need to, because the kit includes washer and gasket. Side cutter removes gasket and metal washer comes off by hand. Maybe you have to cut through metal washer as well as gasket?
@cmking99
@cmking99 4 жыл бұрын
This was the hardest part of the job for me. The gaskets were fused to the screw and I spent a couple hours with a metal pick and side cutters chiseling them out. But I saw another video where a guy recommended in this case using a giant side cutter big enough to just cut through the metal washer at the same time. I'll do that next time.

Blow hot air on the rubber seals to make it rubbery than they come off easy. Try your sisters hair blow dryer.

hardest part was trying to remove the spark plug seals. if they are dry rotted the easiest way to remove it is to use a screwdriver to lightly CHISEL it out. BUT NOT from the bottom backside you have to do it from the TOP side looking down

A cringe worthy oversight was leaving the gaping hole of the oil fill cap off during the entire reassembly. Keeping dirt out of the engine compartment used to be a priority, has something changed?

I just did this today. Fortunately I did not need to remove the stock airbox. I found that just removing the top cover of the air filter gave me a enough clearance to get the vent hose off and get the those plastic clips off the posts in the back.

Please re-do this valve cover gasket video using a standard Honda Civic with a normal air cleaner. I have a square box in back of the engine. I had to totally remove the AC piping bracket from the engine and the host guide bolted to the front of the valve cover. It is MUCH harder than you make it seem in this video especially with teh racing air cleaner on this car. This video is quite misleading and I expect better from you.
