Acquired this old Crosley 655 Tombstone radio at the Chelsea Hamfest last summer. Just getting around to fixing it up. I knew when I purchased it that the caps all needed changing. Normally this is a basic task, but this one thru me a curve ball. Take a good look at this video and heed the warnings before slapping in a new cap and getting a big surprise! This was a first for me! A great project! I hope it is of value to you. TD

Cool... years ago I had a Crosley Model 515. The 655 is definitely my Crosley's younger bigger brother.. I can definitely see the familiar resemblance between the two sets. The thumbnail for this video really caught my eye and and seeing the video helped wake up some happy memories of the times I had with the 515, Terry and Emi :-)

YAYYY! Emmi's back... and she brought a laugh track! NICE! Ohhhh, but that BROWNIE! Funny - my second apartment had a Crosley Shelv-a-door fridge - first one to have shelves on the inside of the door. My friend had a little Crosley roadster that he was restoring. And of course, Crosley radios were a big deal back then. Thanks for the nostalgia, Terry! And thanks for pointing out/solving a tricky power supply problem.

Beautiful Crosley radio from the 1930s ...... I usually reuse these old unused electrolyte "Mugs" by doing surgical work, meticulously cutting the mug, removing and cleaning well inside and putting in new capacitors. In the case of threaded capacitors, I keep the same, and where there were POSITIVE terminals, I make holes for output wires, is very good ..... !!!!!!

Very tricky schematic if you don't know it too well. Same for the 635 model. Change out the paper capacitors as well. They are all DOA by now.

Terry, I just acquired a Emerson mod 641B ,I placed it on a variac and slowly turned it up and all the tubes lit and no smoke then static and then music and after about 2 min. the 35w4 went out and it shut down, I am new at this but I like trying to get old radios to play, if it makes it any worse I am 77 years young. I live off of your videos could you point me in the right direction, before I lose another tube! thank you and keep the videos coming. Frankie D.

yes, the main(probably 2 section)filter cap needs to be replaced...the 35W4 has a thin section of wire inside to act as a B+ fuse. So if the capacitor shorts, the 35W4 flashes and dies. After you change the capacitor, look up how to make a "dim bulb tester"(and use it)-that way, if there is still a short, you won't keep blowing 35W4 tubes.

Hi Sir, I'm a nube at this and I have a question about I believe is a filter cap on top of my General Motors model 252 radio chassis. It is aluminum can style with a hole at the top, and the bottom is a single threaded aluminum bolt that has 4 wires all soldered to a ring clip that is bolted to that threaded rod coming out of the bottom of the cap. Then there is an aluminum flange coming off the lower bottom side of the can that is soldered to the chassis plate underside near the mounting of that cap. There is no markings on the cap other than a red painted dot and that is it. Do you have any idea what the voltage and capacitance is I need to replace this or a link to the cap I need for this? There is a schematic on-line for this chassis but I'm not learned enough yet on schematics and how to tell where that capacitor is in the schematic and which label they give it (ie. C7, C8..etc). I would appreciate any help you can offer me and direction on putting in the new one and what I should get to replace that old one. Is the flange that was soldered to the chassis the Negative lead or a ground flange? Thank you for considering my question

Was the positive side of Cap Z connected to the positive side of cap y internally in the can? If not, was the case the positive side of cap Z? Surely not, as then the positive side of cap x would have to be connected to the case according to the schematic. Makes no sense the way that schematic is drawn unless y and z were connected positive to positive inside the can. Is that the case?

@@d-labelectronics , Have you ever worked on a radio like the Garod V Neutrodyne? It is a TRF type radio. I have 2 of them...well, parts anyway, at least 2 enclosures, but one is missing tubes, and capacitors, and there are issues with both. I hope to end up with one working at some point. Very cool that you are restoring old radios and saving them from the landfill. However the state of am radio is bad. I guess you can listen to sports? But take WGN for example. 20 minutes of adds for every 10 minutes of content. Too much.

I think you should demonstrate how to do a veanoe bong, you could get up on the D lab work bench and get horizontal and have your wife come in with a funnel and have her put that funnel in your mouth and start poring the bottle of Veano in and let’s check your capcitence, doesn’t that sound like fun?, in my time it was the good old beer bong and a lot of towels😆😆😆.

8:53 - I'm curious about how that x-y-z cap is shown in the schematic. The schematic shows X,Y and Z in series with no 'common' ! (?) That has to be among the WORST schematics I've ever seen!

The designer needed to create negative bias voltage for some of the tube grids. There is a three resistor voltage divider in parallel with the speaker electromagnet coil. If I am reading it correctly the resistors add up to 100 ohms and the electromagnet is marked 47 ohms, call it 50, all adds up to 33 ohms. With the full B+ current running through that path, it would generate a few volts, perfect for tube bias. But... the filtering got stupid because of this arrangement. Hence the odd ball ground paths. If it were wired in what we might consider a normal config, I bet it hums like a champ because the 120Hz would go right into the grids! The virtual ground at the junction of the three caps, X,Y and Z, has the AC currents in balance so they will cancel. Sometimes, a designer is just too clever for his own good. OR he was working around some one else's patent!
