When the pandemic started, Social Security stopped offering in-person hearings and switched to a "virtual remote hearing" model. Beginning in April, 2020 all disability hearings were held by phone, and, a few months later, a VIDEO hearing option was added.
Virtual remote (telephone or video) hearings worked so well that Social Security has now made this option PERMANANT and you have the RIGHT to ask for a phone or video hearing in every case. In-person hearings have now returned, but the vast majority of hearings are held by phone or a Microsoft Teams video.
Virtual remote hearings offer the advantage of eliminating travel and parking costs, they allow judges to schedule more hearings in a tighter schedule, and, most importantly they eliminate exposure to germs and disease for all parties.
I do not hesitate to criticize Social Security for its inefficiency and red tape but to give credit where credit is due, virtual hearings are a huge step in the right direction.

So how do you request a virtual remote hearing?
In this video I explain how - you can either fill out a form (I use a form provided to me by a trade group) but you can simply write a two or three sentence letter asking SSA to schedule a phone or video hearing. SSA's form is here: bit.ly/3FALI3b.
While I strongly suggest NOT going at this process without and attorney, if you choose to do so and want a telephone or video hearing, you should make that request in writing to SSA. But I'll say this again, don't do this entire process without an attorney. You have a 300% increased chance of success using one. If you don't win, you'll get nothing.
