How to Restore a Classic Car Steering Wheel - Auto Restoration & Repair Tutorial | Part 2
My Friend Pete gets down and dirty as we grind and sand the plastic steering wheel back into shape and ready for primer. Classic Car and Truck Restoration consists of a lot more then just paint and body!

It’s amazing how much skill, patience, effort and materials go into a restoration like this and how little some charge. I’ve been quoted what seemed like low prices in the past, for a basically irreplaceable wheel restoration. Looking good!

Thank you for sharring an excellent repair process. My challenge being how to get the multi color of a Mopar three spoke steering wheel. Not going to be able to take brown paint and call it good!

I have seen a hollow rasp/cheese grater like that. Outstanding! Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us. This will be the only 2 of 3 videos on KZfaq showing how to restore a vintage steering wheel. D.I.Y. Auto School is the best. Thanks again Pete!

Another great and informative video. I am pretty certain there is nothing you cannot make new. BTW the word for the ridges and grooves on the back of the wheel rim is "knurls" or knurling

You can make a mold from a wheel with knuckles and pour new parts.

Really like this series Pete. Not sure if you mentioned yet, can you use 2 part epoxies like a JB weld type? instead of buy the special gun? Thank you for spending all the time it takes to make your videos!

@@diyautoschool Thats OK Back when I had money I used to buy from them but the last couple years Ive been hearing bad reports. Everything sucks anymore. Have you thought of doing a video of how crappy merchandise is from the parts store? Especially electrical! Ive had brand new points sets that were bad, and you sure dont want to buy switches and that cheap stuff they have in packages..Its ALL JUNK. I thought it was just me but I saw one of these utube garage guys talking about it. We dont have any options do we?

@@charlesadamson7810 Napa has basically stopped selling any and all parts for classic cars and trucks. The only things they have for them is left over stock and once it’s all gone they won’t replenish. And your right the world of products has gone to the trash dumpster. High priced bullshit

Charlie, did you check the materials supplies in the kit? Overpriced stuff from other dealers thrown into a “kit” and priced at a huge mark-up. It was sandpaper, JB weld , q-tips and a can of primer. Give me a break.

@@Dixler683 Just checked, they dont sell it anymore. Its been 10-15 years ago when I ran across it. Didnt need it, didnt buy it. One thing I do still buy from Eastwood is 'Aluma Blast'. Works great on the aluminum parts on my flathead. I know theyve gone downhill but theres a few specialty items I still get from Eastwood.

Pete, funny how the comments in the previous video and this one point out the crack you missed. Like the wheel is only 2 inches from your face and they think you are blind and missed it.
@diyautoschool

The crack they are referring to is un-necessary to fix because it's hidden behind the horn button. But im sure they will complain when it's all done too!

I hate to bust on your nice looking job but it's a typical Texas restoration that won't last two years in the north. Why do steering wheels crack? The steel frame and plastic have different expansion coefficients according to temperature and the polymers bake out of the plastic over time causing it to shrink and become brittle. ALSO, when the steel is exposed to moisture it RUSTS. Rust separates the steel from the plastic. You never removed the rust before filling which means it won't last very long. I've done classic wheels that were missing whole sections of plastic due to rust. Acid does a good job on rust and it must be part of this process before the steel frame is covered. I have replaced missing sections by making a plaster cast of the 'good parts', then greased the plaster (as a release agent) and poured two-part epoxy into the mold. BTW, automotive paint shops usually have fiberglass epoxy in large containers for those who restore boats. The rest of the restoration can follow your instructions.
