Great job! One addition to the excellent advice would be never to apply pressure while you are polishing, as this can create more scratches. Just go over the dustcover lightly using gentle pressure for superb results.

This worked like a GEM on my Technics linear turntable. Of course I masked off areas where there was printing on the cover so as not to "erase" it, but the end result was like brand new! Thanks for posting this.

3000 grit wet sand it also use a little dawn dish soap to get a nice polish. I just picked up two not one two like new 1982 Radio shack turntable cassette 8 track player and radio player so cool a old man gave them too me I was in awe of how nice they looked for being so old the wood on them impeccable none of the lettering is off its so cool to see something so old look so new happy happy.

I watched this video yesterday, afterwards I went to the auto parts store and bought a bottle of this stuff. I recently purchased a vintage Dual 1242 turntable. The dust cover and a lot of scratches on it. None of the scratches were deep, but it looked ugly. I did this three times. After the first time I was amazed how good it looked, but wanted to improve it some more. It looks almost like new now. Some of the scratches are still there, but I have to hold it up to the light and look hard to see them. Was very pleased.

Meguiars scratch x 2.0 worked awesome on my Pioneer Pl-530 Cover, it had some extremely deep scratches so I used 1000 grit wet or dry with water and a tad of dish soap then moved to 2000 and then Scratch x and boom looked amazing!!!! Thank you!!!

Great video! I found a near mint PL-400 in a pile of free stuff. I say near mint because the turntable was in great condition, but the dustcover was scratched up. I can tell you that it ain't scratched up anymore! Thanks for this tip! I will tell you that I used a different scratch removal treatment I had in my car but it worked great. I was already looking at buying a replacement but now I don't have to! You are awesome, my friend!

Well, I was really surprised that this even worked. I've got a technics sl1900 original cover and did as instructed (clean first, towel, soft tee) with the meguiars. I also wore latex gloves. Did 3 pass overs on the top and twice on the sides. Just lightly buffed without a lot of pressure. Seriously cleaned up the haze and "aging". Like he said it doesn't fill scratches but it made them much less noticable, and the surface is actually reflective for the first time since I've owned the player. The meguiars ran me about $14 at AutoZone and I used around half the bottle, but probably used more than necessary. No film on the surface that I can see. Very much worth trying. Worst case its not going to harm your dust cover. And I didn't want to deal with sanding pads, etc. And risk damaging it irreparably. Thanks much for the video!

My Technics D303 (an early 80s hidden gem) looks, feels, and plays like it's brand new, but the dust cover has some minor scratches (though still the best condition D303/Q303/D202 I've ever seen). I want it to look 100% pristine, so thank you for this straightforward tutorial. Reminds me of polishing headlights, which seemed like witchcraft when I was a kid because of how well it works. I'm easily mesmerized by watching the stylus glide and sway, so a perfectly clear dust cover will make my vinyl experience more enjoyable.

This product literally saved my Technics SL-1210 MK2 dust dover!!! I accidentally dropped a jewel case on it and caused some superficial scratches, but this product really solved everything... after 3 applications with 3 microfiber towels, not only it completely removed any scratches but it also polished the surface perfectly. .. it's magic, I still can't believe it! Thank you SO MUCH for your video, you saved my day!!!

Thanks so much for the tip to use scratchx for covers. I’ve cleaned 3x technics dust covers today. One of an 1210mk2 and two of an sl-1500c. Damn they really looks like new. They are so incredible shiny and light scratches were removed easily. Deeper scratches is a different story and don’t expect wonders but they blend perfectly in. It took me circa 1h for all of them. Also I started to polish a really bad looking dual cs-741q cover. Works too without any fogging etc but this cover isn’t in good shape and need way more elbow grease but it’s working. First round done and I guess I need 3-4 rounds more. Btw instead microfiber I’ve used the Meguiars soft foam applicators because I find them easier to hold for longer time. After that I cleaned it with a microfiber. This stuff is magical.

I have a Marantz 6200, and everything is in excellent condition, except for the cover. I’d like to keep it original, so I’m gonna try this first before I spend a lot of money on an aftermarket cover. Thanks for the video, this gives me some confidence that it’ll turn out okay

I'd probably suggest microfiber cloths for any polishing etc. they're the best .

worked for me. In the netherlands we don't have that particular brand, but Turtle wax and Commandant cleaner on an old cotton rag did the job.

This method does work well but the Scratch X seemed to leave behind a very, very light smudgy (waxy) residue, even after polishing with a soft cotton t-shirt. To remove this residue, I wiped down the dust cover again (using the same circular motions) with Goo Be Gone applied to a soft cloth and this lifted off the foggy Scratch X residue. I finally rinsed the Goo Be Gone with soap and water and a terry cloth towlette under the bath faucet, then dried it with a soft cotton t-shirt. While the deeper scratches remain, Scratch X did provide a renewed luster and clarity to the dust cover, which I am pleased with. Btw, "Scratch X 2.0" is now just "Scratch X," circa 2023, according to the company's website. (Dust covers polished: a 1976 Technics SL-1400, a 1979 Technice SL-B2, and a 1983 Technics SL-DD2.)

Great results!! A cheap drill powered wool pad and Meguiar's PlastX will get similar results on worse condition dust covers (which is common) with less effort. Slim chance of burning the plastic with PlastX. I've even used it to buff scratches out of car clear coat.

You can use metal polish on lids , it's just as good but equally as tedious a job though.

Ive seen auto detailers in the UK clean perspex headlight covers with toothpaste to achieve a similar effect I wonder if that would work on TT covers too? It would be cheaper ;)

I have a like new Nakamichi Dragon CT turntable that I'm trying to sell. I may try this for the dust cover, it is the only thing that needs help.

I did my old Technics sl q200 and I probably went over it five or six times got most of the deep scratches out of it but it looks like somebody cleaned it with a piece of sandpaper when I got it it looks pretty good now there's a couple minor deep scrapes in it but it turned out pretty good from what it was polished up the platter replace the stylus and the only reason why I picked up the turntable is because it was a core clock direct ride with Asher am95 stylus and cartridge so the turntable was worth the stylist paid like $80

Didnt you use water or something after use the polish to clean?

I use Nu Finish and an electric buffer.

To work more confortable, you should remove the hinges from the beginning.

I hand sand with wet dry: 800,1000,1500,2000 then scratch x 2.0 on a heavy duty polisher.... then buff with a flannel cloth with lemon pledge with firm even pressure. Speed. Original condition depends on where you start grit wise.

I happened to have a bottle of Meguiar's Plastic Polish handy, so that's what I used. Although it looks WAY better than before, there are still some fine scratches - do you think the Scratch 2.0 would completely get them out?

Hello…. How are you doing?? Listen.. I bought a Technics SL-1210 M5G a couple of years ago. It is in good shape overall, and it is a late model turntable, and what happened was it has a dust cover that’s in good shape otherwise. But there is dry oxidation with old adhesive on the dust cover. Will this stuff get off the that old and dried up adhesive as well as that oxidation? Even if I got to use some mild soap and water with a little elbow grease first? And if so, can I buy this stuff at Walmart? There is one in my neighborhood. And on an unrelated matter. How did that old Denon turntable that you mentioned turned out? -Charles-

Just tried this. I used Autoglym on my Roland TT99 cover. I had a ant-slip rubber mat on it to stop the cats marking the cover, but I still can't remove the marks.

I use toothpaste. does the same job at little cost.

Go grab some disposable nitrile gloves to keep the oil from your hands getting back on the surface while you clean. Your hands will also stay clean.

Wishing to update this video with some information I received today from Meguiar's Customer Service Rep. After watching the video yesterday, I went looking for the product. Specifically, ScratchX 2.0. This product has been superseded by the latest version, Scratch X. I was told that the Scratch X PN 10737ow includes wax so that the user does not have to apply wax after the cleaning. Secondly, this product is designed for painted surfaces ONLY. Not clear plastic dust covers. I told the SCR what the intended use was and he told me that I should Meguiar's PlastX since it is specifically designed for clear plastic. After I refurbish the dust cover from my 1975 version of my Sony PS-4750 I will post the results - good or bad. I agree that the dust cover in the video looks great, but I am relaying the information given to me by Meguiar's authorized customer service representative.

You should have washed to lid with soap and water to start with.

I did 4 applications, buffing (by hand) for about an hour using brand new microfibre terry cloths and it didn’t do all that much. It still looks foggy, with millions of fine scratches visible when you bounce a light off it. Areas that were clear when I started seem less polished now, so it seemed like a waste of time and money.

So no sanding?

Why do they make this material so soft? I bet in a month or two it will develop scratches again.

I tried that and it did not work. I used headlight restorer, brasso,mothers, turtle wax rubbing compound and none of the work.

Micro-fiber cloths are at Dollar Tree.... much cheaper than T-shirts. Just sayin'... 🙂

Top tip, use a polisher and save yourself days of work.

You are using 100x more product than you need to. Wipe down more often and repeat.

Way too much product. Meguiar’s Ultimate Compound would be more effective with less work especially using a microfiber cloth. I would follow that with Meguiar’s ultimate Polish to achieve a perfect finish. Then, a light coating of automotive wax would help protect it further. This is really no different than polishing paint on a car. Deeper scratches can be gotten out with 1500 to 3000 grit sandpaper, then buffing. FWIW...nobody uses terrycloth and/or old tee shirts anymore to polish.
