My Kobalt 40v Max String Trimmer is running out of line. Which is the better way to refill it, buy a prewound spool to swap in or wind the string on yourself? I was pleasantly at how easy it was to refill it myself.
UPDATE: I have been hearing that the pre-wound spools are not working in some Kobalt trimmers. Best bet is just to restring the one you have (as shown in the video)

The Fixit Shed knocked these instructions out the park. The Kobalt manual instructions were woefully inadequate and at variance with actual way to restring my Kobalt trimmer. This video made life much much easier for me. Thank you and I have subscribed!

Thanks for your video, I have watched my son do this several times. I borrowed his weed eater and it was so hard to load. After watching a few videos, even though you do have to push down to get it to turn and load. You do NOT have to hurt your hands or get blisters like I did and a few others that commented below. Please add a video that shows how to take the head off and clean it. Grass clippings and sand get caught in there and that is what is causing the jamming / hard turning. It is very easy to do and saves a lot of time and effort. A little wd-40 after cleaning and it works like a charm :) Added note, if you are not mechanically inclined, take pictures during each step so you can put it back together properly. Placing of the internal head must line up. Thanks again!

You make it look so simple. My wife and I took turns and finally gave up with about 18" on each side. Knob was a pain to turn, and by the time we gave up it wouldn't turn at all. My hands hurt, hers hurt, just from forcing that knob around. A tool that fits the bump head would be awesome, something with a T handle so you can get the leverage to turn it. I think we will end up trying to manually wind it in the future, has to be easier than this. Would not have bought this if we knew what a pain it would be. Thank you for the video, it shows we were doing it right, no matter how hard it was.
@TheFixitShed
@TheFixitShed Жыл бұрын
The knob does turn kind of hard. It is possible that it wasn't winding on the spool properly and that is why it jammed. I just did this agian a week ago, and had that happen to me. If I kept tension on the line while turning the knob, that seemed to work better. I bet someone with a 3D printer could come up with a handle for it.

Poor design, tore my hand up. The instructions are worse and i didn't think that is how it came from thr factory. I was happy to find your video right away but it i just way to hard not worth my time or the injuries. Has to be a better way. I bought this because it was cheaper than buying a new battery for my lawn mower, figured get a new better string trimmer. Works great, just difficult to reload

I have been banging my head all day because the replacement spools you showed (that I had already bought) didn’t fit. This worked! The only thing I would add - you briefly mentioned that the spool inside has to be lined up so that the line feeds INTO it. THAT STEP IS CRUCIAL! Other than that I was able to figure it all out. This helped me a lot. I tried to follow the directions in the manual that came with a new trimmer using the other method but the directions were so vague and poorly illustrated that I could not do it even after hours of trying. Finally found a video showing me how to do the other method(the manual is worthless) but even then I could not keep the string from unwinding trying to put the spool back into the trimmer head. Your video solved the problem for me using the easier method. Thanks!

I'd like to add a suggested update. Lowe's, which is where I bought my trimmer, also sells a 5-pack of pre-curled line. I tried to follow your directions and couldn't get it to work since the pre-curled line, wouldn't go through the pilot holes, so the line wouldn't wind into the spool.. A trip to Lowe's solved the mystery. Your green line apparently was not hampered by the curl. We finally, after some experimentation, discovered that there is a slot in the middle of the internal spool that the line has to go through in order to come out the line-out pilot hole. We had to thread the line through that slot, hold the line down into the in/out guides, and put the top back on the spool. From there, everything worked as you advertised. I guess it should have been evident but wasn't. Perhaps add a picture of the internal spool and show the middle slot that the line has to feed through and it will simply the task even further for those who use the pre-curled line 5-pack. Otherwise, this video was very helpful!

Thanks for this guide. One reason I bought the Kobalt was the easy-wind string replacement. I have had trimmers in which you replaced the spools or re-strung them, but I prefer this. I've rewound the string on mine several times, but I always forget how to do it. I did a search and kept coming up with complicated guides that tell you to take off the spool and wind on the cord and replace it on the trimmer. Those never work for me. the cord ends up locking up and I have to take the head back off to free the cord. The winding method always works for me until I reach the end of the string. I have bookmarked this easy guide for future reference.

What model is it that you are working with? the one and four pack spools you showed are for the kst 130x-06 and are Not for an auto feed bump head spool like the model you have. The listed spools you showed have a total different assembly that dont fit the unit you are working with..

Will the stringed pool release the line out auto during use?

No. You have to bump it on the ground to release more line.

Question: I loaded it just as you did. However while I was using it, I was having a very hard time getting it to feed out. I had to twist clockwise with my hand to pull it out. Is there something that can help me prevent this? Does it need cleaning or wd40 or something? It was wearing me out. Got halfway through the line and then it got easier.

It probably just got wrapped around the spool wrong. I had that happen to me as well. Make sure you are keeping tension on the line when winding it. If you wind it loose, it may bind up.

How can I use it the right way? Because the strings always get small very often.
@TheFixitShed

When you are trimming, the string make a circular cut. you want to make sure you are only cutting with the edge of that curcle. If you get too close to a wall or sidewalk, or stone, etc, it will wear down your string faster. this video seems to have some good tips: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbh3l9OFu7uyZYE.htmlsi=vP-VuQ79MWguU5W8

I got the line in but it wouldn't come out the other side. I had to use tweezers to pull it out. I am now trying to turn the button and it's turning but the line is NOT winding up. It's just turning and nothing is happening. Ughhh

Sounds like the line is not fed properly through the spool. Pop the cover off and look at the spool. There are two layers that the line winds onto. In between the two layers, there is a hole and a tunnel that runs from one side of the spool to the other. That little tunnel is what the line needs to be fed through. That tunnel is what the holes on the outside case need to be lined up with. So make sure the spool is installed properly and the arrows on the cover are lined up when you feed line in.

That is one thing I am not happy with Kobalt/Lowes. The tools are good, but there isn't much help afterwards with parts and supplies. I wuld just take the line off of the new spool and wind it onto the old spool. I have a more detailed video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/od-kna6pnJ6mc2w.html

For me, it seems that the more string I wind on the more often it gets jammed. try winding on 9 or 10 feet instead of 12. This video may help with understading what is going on inside: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/od-kna6pnJ6mc2w.html

I’m a bit confused. I did this, but when spinning it counter clockwise it isn’t accepting the spool? Am I doing something wrong?
@TheFixitShed
@TheFixitShed Жыл бұрын
I am not sure what you mean by "accepting the spool". The spool stays in. You line up the arrows, thread the line through until you get to the middle of the line, and then turn to wind the line onto the spool.

@carltonholmes8743 Жыл бұрын
@@TheFixitShed Correct I have it all lined up, and I threaded the spool through. You know when you push the middle button and turn it counter clockwise? Nothing is happening when I do that. Sorry for the confusion

How do you get more string to come out?
@TheFixitShed
@TheFixitShed 3 күн бұрын
If you bump the head on the ground, the big button on the bottom should release more string. If it isn't releasing more, it may be stuck. You may need to open up the head to free the string. If it happens often, try winding less string, maybe 9 ir 10 feet, instead. This video may help answer some questions: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/od-kna6pnJ6mc2w.htmlsi=JgGLHRAU31gt2FSS

Yes, this is easy to do. But, I forget every time to run the string all the way out the other end and have to refer to youtube video to refresh my brain!! I cut the end of the string at an angle, seems to go through quicker and easier..
