Here are more tips on how to retring a Kobalt 40v MAX String trimmer. Since posting the first video, I have recieved lots of questions. I tried to answer most of them in this video. Hope it helps!

I have been taking the head apart, winding the line and then putting it al back together. Bad words are usually spoken, LOL

I have multiple Kobalt tools and love them but for the life of me I can’t figure out why they made it so hard to restring. Your video was super helpful but dang! Turning that knob is a real challenge!

Agreed. The concept of how to restring is pretty easy compared to having to take it apart and wind the spool by hand, but turning that knob is a bugger.

This video has been a godsend! I'm a 74-year-old widow and sorely miss my man around the house! Do you have a clue for my whacker not advancing the string? I hafta take it apart and restring every time the line gets too short, which has been a royal pain in the a- - . With other whackers, it used to be that you could bump it on a hard surface while running, to make more line come out, but that has never happened with this machine... is this not a feature anymore? I purchased this model for the sake of the auto-stringing. At least now, with this video, I'm able to restring it, as it was a nightmare prior (see last comment lol). Now, is there a way to make the string advance without taking it apart? Thanks, and your video is very well done and much appreciated.

I am glad you are finding the video useful! For me, I find that the less string that I wind onto the spool, the less often it gets stuck. Try winding on 10ft or 9ft and see if that helps. The bump advance should work.

Thanks for this video. I attempted to find a replacement spool and neither Kobalt or Lowes could identify one. As much as i dont want to have to restring it, this at least gives me an option.

I like the Kobalt tools, but getting any kind of parts for them is impossible. Rewinding is definately doable. I hope it worked out for you!

Thank you. Any idea why after I restring it and start to use it one of the strings doesn’t feed out. I’m basically left with one string to do trimming with which seems to work ok. I bought my Kobalt last summer and have restrung it several times with no problem. This issue just started recently.

Sounds like the one side is stuck. Remove battery and try pulling the short string by hand to see if it releases. You could pop the cover off and check the spool to see if you can tell where it is getting hung up. If you can't find it, pull the string out and try re-doing it.

The Lowes string at the store is .095 thickness now. wonder why it is a thicker gauge line than the .080?

Maybe the newer trimmers use thicker string. I would still use the thickness the manual for your machine calls for.

Can kolbalt 40v trimmer use different head called an ugly head? So it doesn't use string to reload?

I do not believe the head is interchangeable. I know tsome heads you can screw off, but this one looks like has an integrated fan for cooling the motor.

Mine is wired amd it doesn't open. So probably not.

Aren't you suppose to push down on the the middle when turning it to string it???

You can, if it helps you. The Kobalt manual doesn't mention pressing down on the knob, it just says to turn the bump knob counterclockwise.

what is the band tool? how big can it handle (an oil filter too?)

It is a strap wrench. Link in description. Yes, it will fit an oil filter. Usually, they come in a pack with 2 different sizes.

Thanks alot. I ran out and start cutting weeds with a knife. I was killing my back and legs. Vegas weeds no joke. I wish id known it was so easy. I kept trying to take top off like every other weed eater.

They would not work. The Kobalt trimmers have an integrated fan for cooling the motor. If you use the echo head, you will overheat and probably destroy it.
