Excellent commentary, Dave. You never cease to amaze us with the wealth of knowledge you have on the tractor and we love when you share that knowledge with all of us. I've learned a tremendous amount from your videos. Especially, "The Angle of the Dangle" (chuckle). Yep, you remember that vid, right? Again, excellent and thanks. Hope you're feeling okay. Was a nice day to be out playing in the dirt, wasn't it? Later, my friend.

yes in deed a nice day to be out on the tractor for sure. I had been wanting to make this video for a long time. I was waiting on a good driveway in rough shape with very little gravel. this one was perfect and a true challenge. it turned out a lot better than I expected. I'm feeling pretty good this week. my son came home and is helping me with a few things around the house. great hearing from you Don I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I have a few more I'm working on soon.

I do a lot of jobs like this on the side with my tractor. The information you put out is spot on. One of the best videos I've seen for dressing a gravel driveway. One thing I might add is that potholes (although I didn't see any on this drive) must be broken up from the bottom, or the gravel will "squeeze" back out of them in a short time. Nice video!

very true, typically i bust up potholes with a pickaxe before I dress the road a lot of people use the rippers on the box blade to bust the holes up. thanks for adding the additional information. peace love and respect!

On a serious note, we have about 1,500’ of drive that looks just like that and needs the same TLC + several loads of gravel. Now that I have a tractor (Ford 340 Industrial Tractor) I can get a lot of seat time bringing back the driveway so that our low riding car will also not scrape. Thanks for the great videos and “Keep on Keeping on!”.

All i have is a landscape rake from Land Pride and its OK. A blade would work better since it would be able to move the gravel more where the rake does fill in the holes and smooths the driveway with limitations. Thanks Dave for your explanations. Will look at getting a blade

I absolutely LOVE the road blade! it is my go to implement when doing roadways. there is no better way to crown a roadway other than buying a "motor grader" which is tens of thousands of dollars. when it comes to road maintenance you just cant beat a road blade and box blade. plus they can both be used for so many other applications other than roads. I was just forwarded the opportunity to test out one of the Dirt dog road blades model number 5060 and it is a beast! loving this thing!

I'm fairly new to this, but I tend to rip my driveway first to remove pot holes, then I use a land plane to get it smooth. I would use the road blade if I had one to add to the process.
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 3 жыл бұрын
I never rip a driveway. most of the time that causes more pot holes to appear. land planes are ok but no way they can perform the task that a road blade can perform. I have used both and prefer the road blade because its simply better and more versatile way more usefulness for your money. I will be doin an extensive road blade video in the future.
@phatrides222000

@@daveknowshow if you don't bust out the holes with a ripper here, they continue to hold water even after you resurface. We bust through the holes and resurface. Boom, no more holes. This is just from the little experience I have and from what the older guys have told me.
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 3 жыл бұрын
@@phatrides222000 busting up the hole is one thing ripping up the entire roadway is another and simply not necessary and generally creates additional holes in areas where you previously had no holes. I generally tackle holes that keep coming back in roadways by digging just around the hole by maybe one foot and the hole it self. then I mix in crush and run in that spot. or 56 gravel with sand in that one spot. this works most of the time. typically the hardest hole to fix is at the entrance / exit of a road way or hard curves. these holes generally always come back no matter what you do short of paving or concrete the roadway entrance / exit. the fact is gravel and dirt roads require regular maintenance and in my experience ripping up the entire roadway creates more soft spots where the road was just hard enough to not fail. so again I stress fix your holes at the holes and try to never rip up the entire roadway. this is just my experience your situation and soil conditions may vary. I hope which ever way you do it that you have great results. Dave

I have a gravel driveway of about 300 yards. I grade/resurface mine the same as you with one exception; I have to leave a slight crown in the center to assist with water drainage so as not to have erosion of the gravel. I very seldom have a need for additional gravel purchase and have lived at my location about 25 years. Also, the driveway is shared by two other families and receives and fair amount of usage. Great video.....as always.

excellent Max! yes a crown is ideal but this corvette was dragging really bad. I still left a small crown but not much. very subtle, I went back over there last night and the driveway is still looking great. the guy watched my video of his driveway and then got me to deliver his tractor out there and now he is looking for a road blade. I may lose that repeat business with these training videos. ha ha lol thanks so much for the comment brother peace love and respect have a blessed up coming Christmas holiday.

something you may advise me on......I have a Mahindra 4025 4X4...w/loader..and backhoe....and my lower boom pin, where the boom swivels....will stop taking grease quite often. I have to remove the pin....clean the passage out...and basically "over grease" in an attempt to reduce the plugging of the passage. This, in turn creates another problem by having too much grease attracting dirt. Any suggestions? I am a disabled VET, but spent most of my life as a heavy equipment mechanic and this one has me stumped.

good question! many people have the same issue. it could very well be the quality of grease. with that said I have never been a stickler on grease quality or brand. I always felt any grease was better than no grease and just grease it often to push the dirt out and keep the flow going. that Mahindra 4025 is a beast of a machine! if you come up with a solution to this issue please keep me updated I'm always open to learning new things myself. hopefully its no signs of premature wear at those pins. peace love and respect!

@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 6 жыл бұрын
the beard is getting out of control, lol its funny when people see me that have not seen me since the beard. they freak out. its the first time I have let it grow like this. the story behind the beard: some people told me november was cancer month and men were suppose to NOT shave the entire month as a symbol to fight cancer. so every Nov I let it grow. last year I let it grow and come December my mom took ill. I was looking after her 24 - 7 and simply did not shave. come January mom went into the hospital and while I sit by her bed side 24 hours a day by the third day I collapsed, bleeding and ended up down stairs in the ER where I was ironically diagnosed with cancer. I still have not shaved. Nov will be 1 year with no shaving. I'm not sure where this beard thing is going. maybe its a hiding place, I have yet to figure it out. I'm thinking maybe spring I will let it go and send the hair off to be made into a wig for someone else with cancer who has lost their hair. not sure how that works. I'll look into it though.

Dave, I am buying an older Kubota L2050 but when I actuated the 3 point to full up it stayed there... It won't come down and the actuating arm feels "free"... very little feel to it. Is there linkage somewhere inside that could have come apart or maybe it needs fluid??? I'd appreciate your comment.

the lever that controls the three point stays up on a position style three point. it raises the three point to the height of the lever position. the three point lift arms are power up and gravity down. but they simply stay at the position under no strain yet you can lift the arms by hand manually. you should not be able to push the arms down though. I hope that answers your question if not feel free to reach out to me here or my personal email at Daveknowshow@aol.com

HI Dave, Great VIdeo! Thumbs up and Subscribed! I just got a similar setup to yours but I am wondering how to break up ice on a gravel driveway? I'm in a new place and the road needs grading but for now I got like 3 to 4 inches of ice across a good part of the driveway to deal with. I also see this issue on others driveways in my area. Help!
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow Жыл бұрын
its not always easy to do. if you can get under the ice it will break up in sheets. trouble is depending on how it froze it can take the gravel with it. I'd use salt and sand to try and melt ice and create traction. ice is a real problem. if you find an answer that works without destroying the driveway let me know. wish I was more help for ya.

if its bad we sometimes put in a sort of speed bump to direct water to the side and keep it from washing out the middle. its a balance and what ever you can get to work for your situation I'm all for that. driveways can be tough in mountainous terrain. best of luck my friend!

I'm actually working on a video series that will take a ton of mystery out the blade and how to use it. the blade can be complex in how you present it to the ground. so look for that video in the future. you wont likely see anything like it any where else.

Nice video Dave. So is a road blade necessary to properly for a driveway? I have a 66" box blade, but I assumed that it was my inexperience that was not improving my 700 foot driveway condition much. Maybe a new toy, I mean tool is in my future.
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 6 жыл бұрын
the box blade is a great tool! it can do many things however as I stated in the video once the box is full it NO LONGER cutting. whereas the road blade angled cuts the entire length of your driveway moving rock from the outside edge into the middle and from the middle back out. image the row of gravel left in the middle from the road blade in one pile. that pile would likely fill a box blade several times over. I still like using the box blade when needed and you can have great results with just a Box blade. Road blades can be found used fairly cheap. I paid $300 for that Road blade which came with a three point spike aerator. " not a plug style " I see them on CL for between 150 and 250 all the time. mostly because people think they are only used for snow removal. a road blade is used for much more than just removing snow. so yes you need a new toy I mean tool, well we can call it a tool for the sake of the wife. lol this one I have is old and worn. it dont tilt or offset like some. still it works great and since its old its heavy and made solid. it was made by lienbach

I would have scraped the center part first to shave off the excess hard soil, then the sides to pull gravel toward the center
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 5 жыл бұрын
yes you can do it either way I find pulling in the sides first leaves me with a nice fresh boundary line to go by and keeps me from digging the center line any deeper. you don't want to go deeper with the driveway as in doing so you could open up a possible pot hole. typically the center of the driveway is close to where the over all finished height should be once crowned. if you don't want a crown just blade down the center a few times as a last pass.

High crown and high sides, also other sections that have been taken over by soil and grass, but I can just see the remnants of the old top dressing, wondering if the TR3 would be the all round tool to do it? We have quite chalky rock here in South West France....

I have never used this implement myself so I can only go based off seeing the youtube video from their website. it seems like a solid built attachment. I can see where it would be perfect for a horse arena or a dirt race track to groom it before each pass. or even a base ball field or prepping for seed beds. I'm not convinced its a better option for a gravel road than a decent road blade and boxblade to really strategically move gravel from the outside in where its needed and then move that gravel with the boxblade to fill in the low spots. of course being an old dog sometimes its hard for me to embrace new methods of doing things with out really getting my hands on one and trying it in various conditions its hard to endorse it as a better option. especially when you can find very nice road blades and boxblades used for cheap. I bet this new implement cost a pretty penny. great comment by the way and thanks for dropping by always good to hear from you. Dave

Thanks for that Dave, I can see where you are with that analysis, and 'old dogs, new tricks'! etc. I cannot find a video with the TR3 that deals with a driveway in need of substantial renovation, only sponsored videos. Perhaps we can convince them to let an experience guy like yourself to have a free go??!!

@@tonynewnham3114 lol yeah that would be a good one if they did that. however honestly that thing would have to do things that from what I have seen cant be done by it as its configured. one thing particular is rotate side to side to bring in gravel from the sides of the roadway back to the middle like you can easily do with a road blade with out going to deep and creating more issues than you had before. going to deep can create a situation where a recurring pot hole is born that was not previously there. this is why I never use the rippers down on a gravel roadway unless its absolutely necessary and even then I avoid it at all cost. I would be a hard one to convince that the TR3 is a better option than a road blade / box blade combination. I cant even bring myself to admit a land leveler is as good an option as a road & box blade combination and it is about as close as you can get to having both tools in one. although in my honest opinion I would prefer having the two separate as they are so much easier and so much more precision tools when used separately. I doubt they will want to try and convince me this old dog is very skeptical of these new all in one implements.

Thanks for making this video! Question: could the blades be used successfully on a dirt road?
@daveknowshow
@daveknowshow 5 жыл бұрын
absolutely yes! the road blade is what roads are made with. typically on road ways you need to bring material from the outer edge inward towards the middle where it can then be used to fill in pot holes and such. so using the road blade is honestly in my opinion the best tool for the job unless you own a moto grader which is a road blade with its own motor and wheels. the blade is located in the middle of the belly of the machine rather than in the rear like a rear road blade such as used in this video. you can actually use the road blade to do the entire road with out the use of a boxblade at all if planned out correctly. travel down one side with the blade angled pull material inward. then the opposite side pulling material inward. then start at one end driving down the center of the road with the blade straight not angles and turned around backwards to back drag and spread the loose dirt or gravel into any pot holes and such. this method has worked for farmers for many years. the road blade can also be used to crown the roadway for better water drainage during raining seasons. just youtube search crowning a roadway and you will see many videos where a moto-grader is used to crown a roadway by state road builders. the same can be done with a road blade set at the correct angles. have fun and keep learning! thanks you for a wonderful question and thanks for dropping by my channel. I'm sure you will find many very useful tractor related videos on my channel. peace love and respect Dave in Virginia

Dave, I just did this 3 weeks ago. The driveway goes up a hill out to the pavement. Now going up the hill I have rows of gravel perpendicular to the driveway like rumble strips. I was thinking of doing it again with a box blade and scarifiers so it would pack with the dirt and eliminate the rumble strips. Thoughts?

that's a " wash board " effect. I see it a lot on many roads. the angled blade should help. a lot of times this comes from rain on a crowned roadway. I'm honestly NOT sure what the best course of action is. however I will try and find out!

this was a no charge job for a friend. typically 150.00 so long as travel is not to far. its additional for gravel if needed.
