So you've made the drop, and are setting up for the tube, but are you positioning yourself right to drive through, and make it out? Lets break it down, and find out!
Before we get started, know that this is a VERY IN DEPTH look into different types of Barrel Riding. This isn't something you can learn in 5minutes, or even the 30min in this video. I dove into as much as i could, explaining everything you need to know, to get yourself through barrels of all shapes. It works for me, and I hope it can help you too!

@@MrGottaGo depends on how heavy the wave is, or if you are over reef or sand. Depends whether you NEED to get under the wave, or if it'd be safer to get blown inside some so as to not wear the next one on the head as well.

@@jhchnc honestly... can touch on barrel riding and late takeoffs, but trying to describe and explain anything else would be irresponsible. my technique in other aspects of surfing could use coaching as well, and i'm not a balanced enough surfer to properly provide insight into other areas of coaching. Honestly... even trying to put into words the barrel riding technique, was a challenge.

- Jesus dude, there's probably a hundred guys on youtube who have done surfing "tutorials" and there are exactly two that are even remotely worth watching and they are both your barrel riding guides. This must have taken a ton of time to put together and it really shows, it's excellent. Your frame by frame breakdowns are far and away the best analysis of any single waves I've ever seen. It's also super helpful that you don't just explain what you're doing, but what you're avoiding and why. - I rarely comment on videos but I felt like I had to show some support! Keep it up! Huge fan of your videography skills on top of your surfing.

Man these are by far the best tutorials - the slow mo and pointing with cursor is really helpful. Shoulder positioning and weight placement seems so critical even though it happens so fast and sometimes subtly. Thanks for these!

Dude.... Thank you... This was such a beautifully considered and detailed look at technique. Many of the best can't put what they do into words, but you succeed and it's appreciated. Would be so stoked to see this as a continuing series (bottom turns, snaps/top turn variants, airs...anything maneuver focused).

some of the most memorable surfing moments burned into my brain are from surfing the Light House when it was in its original position, back in the 80's. Fading off the bottom and standing straight up in the barrel. Love your videos and love Cape Hatteras. Keep up the good work. looking forward towards seeing the new stuff when you get back into the swing of it.

What a legend! I'm certainly not riding waves of consequence like you are, but this is so helpful! I had no idea I could use my shoulders to stay under the lip. For beginners, getting out there is half of it. If you get time would love your humble opinion about simply getting out (thru it)? Board ditching (no channel) in 8'+ bch break waves & over reef. Straight panic at the disco. Essentially, how to cope with all that violence? lol

Brett, As I said before, you are one of the most entertaining vloggers out there. I'm a lifelong surfer and am recovering from a hip replacement/femur fracture. Some days I wake up and want nothing to do with anything that reminds me of the surf, and some days I watch your old bits, chomping to get in the surf. I don't think I really need a tutorial, but know it will be helpful when I am released to finally back get in the water. Keep up the great content.

Epic stuff Brett. Don't be surprised at all the great feedback, no one on youtube does advanced tutorials, there's a huge hole waiting for guys like you! And you do an unreal job of it, really great editing and details. Just one thing, ditch the background music when you're talking, it's annoying and just not needed, if you look at other highly polished youtube channels, none of them use background music. Keep it up you legend!

Its like giving driving directions, you know how to get there, but have to think when explaining. After years of windsurfing, I was offered a job to be an instructor. I knew how to sail , but had to think about how to explain it. Brett is an excellent surfer, and teacher!!

honestly it's the same for me. This video was actually difficult for me to put into words, and took me a few hours to get right. My last one came a little more naturally. But trying to explain other aspects in surfing are beyond me. I've tried with friends and can't ever really put into word how to do an air, or a turn.

Hey mate, I watched this about a week ago and then yesterday surfed super fun shoulder high tubes here at home in Costa Rica... honestly, this video helped me SOOO much. I got the best tube I’ve probably ever had at the beach I was surfing and two other fun ones in the same session. Please keep making more of these videos. The hardest part of progressing your surfing and when trying to teach others what to do, is getting people to remember the little tips you've tought them when they are actually going for a wave/riding it. It's so easy in surfing to get caught in the moment and have everything you've ever learnt go right out the window!
