In this tutorial I am going to show you a few methods to apply rivets to your scale model. For me riveting is a tedious but necessary task which gives much better overall appearance to the model air plane. There are many ways to approach this task and they are often times governed by the shape of the surface. How to achieve a good looking rivet lines? Watch the video :)

Guys from Europe, google and consider excellent riveting wheels "Rosie the Riveter" from Mr. Dousek - he has wide variety of pitches for different scales and also double wheeled tools. I am really satisfied with these... Metodi, you did nice job on this tutorial, thanks a lot :-) keep in mind, that it is also possible (and sometimes better) to do riveting on surface, that was already covered by Mr. Surfacer or other type of primer - so you don't have to worry about loosing your tiny rivet lines under surfacer/primer layers...
@MMScaleModels
@MMScaleModels 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I believe that Rosie the riveter uses the wheels from RB. Yes I have tried this but in some cases I prefer to do the riveting before I assemble the model hence the parts are still not primed.

how does the tool work in corners, i mean when you cannot finish the line because of an obstacle? ...or along circles of small diameter?
@MMScaleModels
@MMScaleModels 4 жыл бұрын
This tool can get into very tight spaces due to it's small diameter. Where it cannot go I use sawing needle in pin vice.. usually we are talking about up to 5 rivets so not a big deal... same for the circles.. needle

I completely understand the riveting tool leaving some "burrs" on the surface of the model, but by sanding, don't you sometimes fill the rivet holes you just created with styrene dust? To maybe answer my own question, I guess some isopropyl alcohol on a strip of paper towel would/could remove. Thoughts?
@MMScaleModels
@MMScaleModels 3 жыл бұрын
Plus some air from the airbrush to blow the dust out... sometimes it stays in quite persistently.

@@MMScaleModels Yup, that too! I'm in the process of my first big (literally) re-scribe and rivet adventure with the old Monogram 1/48 B-24J. Re-scribing is done but I'm going to put the fuselage halves together before I start the riveting. Obviously will need to repair some scribe lines along the fuselage seams as well. It took me 2 weeks to rivet a Revell 1/32 Beaufighter...I gave it a light sand afterwards...It looked really good...but then sprayed it...After a one coat of primer and one top coat the rivets were gone...so beware...I was gutted...I used the revell riveter and the Galaxy tools riveter...both disappeared

Thorough clean up to remove as much stuff from the rivets as possible and then very thin paint layers. For me this is the way.

@@MMScaleModels Thanks for the advice...I'm still learning after been absent from the hobby for 40 years...I'm enjoying it again and so much has moved on since the 70's when I was a kid...I didn't have the money back then to buy spray kits and compressors and I'd never heard or making rivets...The Beau 1/32 is a good model now (apart from the lack of rivets)...I re-scribed the panels and modded the undercarriage wells and cannon holes...and it looks pretty good with the weathering too...All in the name of fun!...Thanks again
