Best video on the web regarding this. I love how they explain how different grips can effect it, and the simulated lesson style with questions that we would ask if we were getting it. They cover all the bases on how different positions cause each thing, rather than "You should do this" approach. When he said something along the lines of "flat shoulder plane, hips go up and out" this is so many of us, me included. Im just blown away. We get so focused on what the arms should do and forget to turn to set the club. Awesome video.

So glad for this topic as its hardly ever talked about and strangely something I was having to experiment with. Slight pronation deep into the backswing helped me regain ability to hit baby draws after I "fixed" my too much inside & open takeaway. But I'd like to work it in gradually. So many videos on right arm/hand when I believe most of us are dominant right hand swinging with lead being left and thus need help on what left arm and hands should be doing. Really nice that you gave TJ room to share freely. Lastly, each time I work on a different part of my backswing, I find my release has to change. Maybe a topic that you lead into.

This is the key that turned my swing around, terrible slice for 30 years now a straight shot or slight draw. This one tip of where is the club head right before the wrist hinge is it straight up if so you'll struggle to close it or is it leaning forwards much better, is the back of the hand visible, bad, is the back of the hand towards the ground, much better. Thank you Eric, this short tip has literally changed my life.

Another great explanation of the take away which is so important, more so for those who can rotate fully with a straight left arm (younger golfers) I watched a video of yours similar to what was shown here which helped me so much Eric! I have a back swing to around shoulder height keeping my left arm straight and I make good contact with the ball as long as I do not rush the take away! Have you any footage of short back swings for senior golfers?

First few swings of the season today and I was hitting miles behind the ball. I found feeling as I was shallowing/going in to supination during transition resulted in a much better strike. I think a few arm rotation drills and shallowing the club might be my first practice area this year. This video seems a good place to start. 👍

Really, really good stuff - I just wish I could have watched this type of material 30 years ago to have saved all the pain. If you ever get to teach a right-shooting hockey player, that had a big shot (that was me), the top left hand would learn to be in a VERY bowed position at impact (this is to keep the puck down on a slapshot so you don't kill your own player in front of the net) - I now finally understand why I like a weak left grip in golf - I just naturally bow my left wrist a lot through impact. Nice collaboration.

I struggle with pronating too early in the backswing, which makes shallowing harder. When I can feel like my left palm faces the sky longer, it’s so much easier to turn it over into a shallow position in transition. This explanation couldn’t be any better 👌

Thanks for the video. I used to be close to scratch player....played college golf....ect....now, I just hack away. Been in physical therapy for pelvis/back issues. Long story short, realized my left arm is very supinated at address ( inside of left elbow pointed at sky, outside of elbow pointed at my thigh). I can take a 4 knuckle showing strong grip with left hand and this problem persists. There is an issue with my left scapula not functioning correctly. Not a good way to play golf.....feels almost impossible. There is basically zero natural pronation in my left arm. I've got a wicked flop shot though

Would need to see your swing to say for sure. Rotating left arm toward the ball (internal rotation of lead shoulder and lead arm pronation) all else equal would make the shaft more horizontal (flat) and open face. If you have strong grip that can be OK....again it depends on what you do in late backswing and transition from there Consider www.cogornogolf.com you can send in videos there and we can go through things more thoroughly

Eric, this video focuses a lot on rotation in the backswing (and does so superbly), but you go over rotation in the downswing quite quickly. Especially near the moment of contact. What I miss: how do you create the rotation in the downswing? When I try to do it intentionally, the clubface is way closed at impact. Anything on that by chance?

Good video, this is not talked about enough. As you say, this is a "stock" swing, others like Wolff, Rahm are available. Also, as we age and are unable to turn our shoulders, it is important to pronate the lead arm earlier or you can get stuck too upright, unable to drop inside. Sad to see Jack Nicklaus at 80 struggling with this, a short Rahm-like swing would help him but he insists on swinging upright as he did in his youth.

Nope. This is orthodoxy but it's inferior. The idea that we can both rotate the forearms open and then close them in the milliseconds of a downswing consistently well is folly. It requires immense practice and tolerance for wild swings in ball striking consistency. Which is what we see with almost all golfers and most pros. And I guarantee you won't be able to do it without a significant deceleration of the arms. I know, I did it for 25 years. My theory on why this became the orthodoxy is because of the first 400 years of golf with hickory super flexible super high torque shafts and the physics of that system. Study Morikawa and Hovland, phenomenal strikers, if you want to do it a better way. Among others . Another good visual is a video Mike Dunaway did with the model airplane in his hands. Look that up for a great visual. So I'm going off the reservation on this one with you Eric. Had you guys not sold it as THE way, and left options ok then. But you didn't. Again, and I've said it before , if you make a throwing sidearm/overhand motion in golf posture your throwing hand will wind counterclockwise and unwind clockwise. That's the best way to hit a golf ball. Imagine throwing the way demonstrated here: When you rear back wind the forearm clockwise and you'll immediately see how goofy it is. The pro here sort of slipped by the shallowing problem without a good explanation. Because unwinding counterclockwise goes steep. And the momentary clockwise then switching to counterclockwise is problematic. Imagine something new where the entire downswing was unwinding clockwise. Then shallowing is simple. In any case, there's more than one way to skin the cat.

YES BUT NO! LET'S just call this the famous "shallowing out" at top recommendation. Great, but the average golfer doesn't have the time to do this. they rush. so if they don't have some rotation earlier, they are too VERTICAL at the top and all hell breaks loose on the downswing (lifting etc). You can play being too flat, you can't play being too vertical.
