This was a perfect explanation of the correct operation of this tractor. I worked for the company for 15 years that is still manufacturing the fuel filter and converter/regulator for this tractor. They are wonderful designs and lp systems today will never be as good as those original Century systems.

Thanks for showing that JD LP operation. I grew up on Dads farm driving a '57 Ford 700 (Tricycle Hi Crop) The oil stayed clean so long that the oil filter would start to rust. Good memories! Glad you keep that sweet LP tractor alive.

Ive always started them on liquid then switch it to vapor. I have a 67 IH 806 Lp

I've heard that works good on some tractors. When we first got this one, the liquid valve had to be open all the time, or else it would leak past one of the seals. Still seemed to start fine that way, but once we fixed the valves, we mostly run this one on vapor only.

Thanks for your video Have you done a video on fueling one I’m thinking about buying one it’s a4010 I have never been around a propane tractor not sure if fueling is a pain in the butt not worth the hassle

I have not, because I'll be honest, we kinda cheat, since the gas station a mile from the farm has a propane filling station, and we just use it. If you go on Facebook and search "LP Tractors Group" ask to join, and the topic of filling is discussed there frequently, and at length.

I beg to differ on the composition of LP. It's actually 75% propane and 25% methane. Much for the same reason you mentioned, it has to do with the vaporization rate based on ambient temperature. Only way you're going to get straight propane is if you get refrigeration grade propane, and if you ran that in your grill, you'd likely not be able to turn it down far enough to not make charcoal out of what you're cooking. That is straight from the gas separation and processing plant in Cadiz Ohio. The problem with butane is for our normal temperature winters here in the states, it won't boil, and propane is better, but not by much... Methane give it that little kick to get moving.

Thanks for the input. I was getting my information from the 28th edition of The Operation Care and Repair of Farm Machinery published by John Deere in 1957. It doesn't namely mention methane in the description of LP fuel in this book, but then again, this is 60+ year old information too.

I wonder how many hours could you run before refilling with LP. Very rare tractor.

Its about the same as a gas burner to be honest. The bigger tank is just room for vapor expansion

It's about the same as a normal tractor, Carnahan pointed out, but it's definitely cleaner than gasoline and definitely smells better

Does it have the same amount of power as the Diesel counterpart.

I would say that it's close, but not the same. Here's the thing, this tractor has 362 Cubic Inches, and 9:1 compression. The diesels are 404 Cubic Inch and 16:1 compression, so the diesel is pretty obviously going to make better torque. I'll have to look up the Nebraska Tractor Tests, but I think the LP actually recorded a little more HP than the diesel, but overall torque was lower and fuel consumption higher. Now, if you asked me if it has more power than a gasser, I would probably say yes. We have a 4000 with the 362 gas engine and 7.5:1 compression, and I think this LP 4020 would out-work it. Not by much, though.
