Hey Sage, great advice as ever. I've an idea for a video. "Dealing with disappointment". Last weekend I completed my first ever marathon. It was a trail marathon here in the UK with a load of elevation and it was brutal. I completed the course in good shape, but wasn't super happy with my time. I'm not suffering a little from post-marathon blues after so much anticipation and preparation for my race. Obviously you're super successful, but you've have had a couple of disappointments this year. How do YOU go about picking yourself up and focussing on the next challenge? Thanks and keep up the great work.

Hi Sage, glad to see you're feeling better! Can you make a video giving advise to runners who have hit a 'plateau' in their training. Maybe you could give suggestions on when one should increase or decease speed training; or when one should increase or decrease long run mileage; or, perhaps, when one should consider strength training etc.. Maybe you could also talk about what the progression of what periodization ought to look like -- e.g. base-building phase, followed by speed phase, followed by race pace training... Thanks!

Great tips! Thanks!!! Your training talks are just great! I have a suggestion for another topic: How about your training plan for the upcoming winter-season? I know you don´t really have an "off-season" but since there are no races and you (even you :-)) can´t run on the egde all year round: What´s your approach to get the most out of the cold time of the year? I´m thinking to focus more on endurance: easy & long runs, long hikes & power-hikes (in snow if possible), less speed/intense workouts. And in addition core training, muscle mobilization, pilates. Would be great if you´d share your thoughts about that. Thanks and have fun running again (and cycling too)! Thumbs up please! :-)

@Vo2maxProductions
@Vo2maxProductions 8 жыл бұрын
+ninjaguy123 short answer: if you're sub 3:30 light weight flats are probably faster. Lighter is not always better though as one makes a trade-off with support. You also want to do speed workouts and even some long runs in the flats to prepare.

Question regarding "strength bringing out speed": Earlier in the year I ran a 5:49 mile with literally zero aerobic base (10-11min million jog pace)! In December I did ran a 62-63s 400m sprint, which suggests a lot better 800n-mile potential than what I did. In July I saw sense and have been base building properly ever since. My MAF/easy pace is improving nicely, as is my tempo/threshold pace. The thing is, my paces are still weak. My threshold pace is around 7:13/mile now, for reference. I feel like my speed in the shorter distances is never going to be "brought out" until I significantly build my strength further. For example, if I want to break 5 for the mile, then realistically isn't that only ever going to happen once I'm running 6mins/mile at threshold etc.? Even if I did speed/intervals and made my pace at anaerobic / VO2 Max a lot faster than my pace at threshold (which seems to be naturally how things for me), there's only so well I can run at these shorter distances, right? It's funny because now that I'm getting into running, I'm more interested in longer distances and long term base building. I have big plans of building my strength to better levels, where hopefully my relatively better speed can one day be brought out! So I'm mostly among m asking this stuff about short distances out of curiosity! Sorry for long comment.

sage, what do you think about the maf - method (run at 180 bpm - age - specific subtractions or additions) not only to build an aerobic base, but as a training in general? its proponents claim this is the only way to build your aerobic system and that it will build up your fitness so well that you should not run at a higher intensity.

Could you do a video about strength and aquatic training? I log about 300 minutes of cross training (lifting, water running, swimming, core, biking, and basketball) per week, is that too much for winter training? What are your thoughts on the FIRST "run less, run faster" method?
@Vo2maxProductions
@Vo2maxProductions 8 жыл бұрын
+Stuart Kelly Not good for long-term, full improvement. It's like a quick diet approach. Works well at first but then will backfire and you'll never reach your potential. Easy aerobic base building and higher mileage before adding quality workouts (intensity and speed) is always better long term. I guess if one is really short on time and they want to run a 5km or half marathon and get in shape it might work a bit...but it is very limiting. You can't add in a bunch of intensity for less volume and expect it to work for very long or allow you to progress very far.

I understand that 180 spm is an ideal cadence but when should I factor in increasing my stride rate into my training? I am returning from injury (sacroiliac joint and strained adductors) and am building up my mileage very slowly. Should I do it from the get go or should I wait until I am running more consistently? Thanks for your time.
@Vo2maxProductions
@Vo2maxProductions 8 жыл бұрын
+Keith Lai well you don't want to force anything or try to change too much too soon. Generally a faster stride rate will help reduce impact force...adjustments must be made slowly though...a little at a time. Check out Sandi's video on stride rate here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rbZ-fMWH3MvJqJc.html

Vo2maxProductions Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. After watching Sandi's video you linked and most of your other videos I think I'll focus on building a solid consistent base first then concentrate on increasing my stride rate. It is too stressful to concentrate on both at the same time.

A bit late, but I'm a high school cross country runner and I want to improve my three mile time. My problem with this is that elite runners have 10.x or 11.x 100m sprint speed. You can't tell me that they achieve that type of speed without sprint training. Running distance and putting in a lot of miles is great, but if your max 100m speed is only 13 seconds you're never going to be able to string together a great mile time unless you're at 90% max speed the entire race, which is obviously impossible.

I think the guy might know what he is talking about. However I do not like the terminology he uses. Arthur Lydiard indicates that you must first train the legs before you put in hard interval training. You should do speed development all year long. I doubt that Sage knows that. Speed Development is 6 X 60, short hills, or bounding ONE day per week. In anything you do you should build it up gradually. A long run should begin at your longes run recently. If your long run in the last month is 5 miles, then that is where you start. But you want to get that run up to 15-22 miles depending on your age. I don't think you want to do a 22 mile run at age 16!Then when you the 60s, 70s, or 80s you can start with 4 X 60 at 75%, 80%, 85%, and90%. Later you might be able to do 6 X 80 at 80%, 85%, 90%, 95%. Be careful when you introduce ANYTHING.You can run 20 miles but you take a step backwards if you overdo something. It does not work to go out into the forest and do squats with 225 pounds all day! Ask Arnold Schwartzeneggar. He actually tried that. It does not make you better.The same is true of any other training you do.Then 10 weeks out from your peak race you begin interval training and you build the volume up for 6 weeks. With 4 weeks before the peak race you begin cutting down.A 5K is 85% aerobic. Lydiard claimed that you did not need to count number, or time the repeats. You do not have to do 10 X 400 in 65, or 5 X 800 in 2:00!

When you are preparing to run a marathon for the very first time, you should attempt this marathon training program “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it). The book is full of good advice, ideas from those who have run one before, what to do as well as what NOT to do, and also training daily schedules. Strongly suggest it. .

"Strength is speed," he says. Be careful. This is a loaded remark.What is strength? If it is endurance...then that remark is false! Endurance does not necessarily make you faster. Running slow all the time, just makes you able to run slow for a long time!How ever it is true that you work on all three systems when you run. It has been shown that if the run is long enough it will develop speed. However one must do speed development ONE day per week or you will lose speed.10 X 200 in 27 is not speed development! Look up Arthur Lydiard and find out what he has to say about SPEED development.

Good for you, but please slightly change the title of your video. I was looking for 10K resolution video, and found this in the first 10 or so results. This video doesn't have 10k resolution. You're talking about running 5 or 10 kilometers. 5km, 10km; not just 5k, 10k. 5k is just 5 kilo, which if anything refers to 5 kilograms.

Kilo could refer to any unit of metric measure since it is a prefix...

Paul O'Neal it indeed is just a prefix, but in common language, when just saying 'kilo', it refers to weight. A person saying 'I weigh 65 kilos' isn't uncommon, but 'that town is 40 kilos away' doesn't make any sense.
