What is going on?!
Ever since the day I got 33s 285/70/17, I like many, wanted 35s instead. I wished so much that I had. But over the years researching and learning I found that there was a lot I didn't know went into running 35s and also the consequences as well. That said I'm glad I started with 33s, it gave me more than enough time to learn how the truck behaves. Flash forward 4 years I feel like I was able to make a much more informed decision on the new tires I went with. Forget that cutting up a nice truck just for 35s. I have 285/70/r17 on a 3in front 1in rear no rubbing and didnt have to cut anything. Thanks for the video explaining things

The wheels are 17x8.5 zero offset but I am running a 30mm (1inch spacer).

That was well presented and thought out. Those MT Baja Boss are awesome tires. I have a 4Runner and stayed with the stock TRD Pro wheels and installed 255/80 R17 (33") "pizza cutters." I stayed within 2.5" of lift. Because I kept the same offset, I didn't have to do a BMC. I found that because of the additional weight to my rig and the increased size of the tires, I was really negatively impacting the performance of the vehicle in addition to adding considerable stress to the drivetrain. So, I did a regear to 4.56. The difference is night and day. It's doing better now than when it had 265s on it. You're definitely on the right track.

Nice! Yeah everyone says go to 5.29 for Tacomas but I think that is overkill. If and when I re gear I'll do either 4.56 or 4.88 which I hear are better for long freeway miles. I do a lot of that when traveling.

I'm biased but if you get the Baja Bosses you won't be disappointed these things are BEEFY! I haven't checked exact mounted and inflated numbers on other Mickey Thompson tires though although I feel like I should.

285s will fit with a 2 inch lift and minor trimming and no need for a CMS depending on what brand you go with. A 295 will definitely need a CMC and likely a 3 inch lift. Going from 285 to 295 is a bigger jump than you think. Also 275 is un common because I think if you are getting new tires for $1000 people want the difference to be sizable or even noticeable. Great Video!! I didn't notice if you mentioned if these are the SL or LT versions of the Baja Boss. There is a big weight difference between the two. I have the 285, 70,17 SL Baja Boss tires myself.

This is great thinkin if ya ask me. Weight vs 1/2 inch more tire… I went with 285s just for weight and what my needs where for my build and daily driving. But I myself where looking at all this for future ideas. This was great real world needs vs just a number to say on your build. 265/70r16 almost a true 32 inch tire. Standing around 31 inches when on the vehicle aired up. Good enough for me for mile trail riding. But I for sure dream about having a 6 inch lift for 35s will I ever do it absolutely the most I’ll ever do is a 33 when I’m out of warranty with a minor lift. But it sure sounds cool.

Yeah 33s are honestly the ideal size and 100% 35s sound nice but when you stop to think about the long term journey of 35s that's where I reconsidered.

Thanks for the video, definitely for something to consider. I’m still running 33’s until I get spindle gussets and upper bucket shears welded on. Just regeared to 5.29’s a month ago.

Thank you! One thing to consider is getting after market spindles. Gusseting spindles actually weakens the stock ones because of how hot the metal gets during welding such that it weakens the welds and material. I have stock spindles and wheel it pretty hard no issues.

@@quicksendtaco Is that from first-hand knowledge? All the other tacoma youtubers I follow such as DirtNation advise gusseting spindles. From my understanding, only Camburg makes after-market spindles.

@@khantra4568 Someone I know yeah and that's what the shop then confirmed by looking at where it broke in half while being gusseted. I think it's probably fine if you dont off-road much. Yeah Camburg is what I would upgrade too if I were to make any changes. You'd be surprised how many builds just run stock spindles. It is not as big of a point of contention as people think.

Great info! I was wondering since you have a tune, what setting did your tuner plug in for your tire size? I don’t think they have a 34” option. It’s 33 or 35.

I went with an OTT tune and the tuner comes into town seasonally and was able to dial the tune in for 34s. Did someone tell you you could only do 33s and 35s? People even tune their trucks stock so that would be for 31s AND 32s.

Great! Definitely look on the tire websites to see their true diameter each 295 or any tire is going to be different. I'm running a zero offset wheel that is 17x8.5 and I have a one inch or 30mm spacer sooo -30 ishhh?

I prepared my 2nd Gen for 37's roughly 11 years ago and run 35's (315/70r17). It's honestly not that difficult to do. Zero rubbing and definitely no wheel spacers. Proper backspace/offset wheels are always better. There is no need for changing out bumpstops that limit uptravel if you plan properly.

I'm sure I could run 35s on my current setup without rubbing If I wanted to I just enjoy the form and function of the 34s. I get great V6 gas milage, still look beefy and I'm not putt as much stress on moving parts in the suspension as I would with 35s or 37s.

@quicksendtaco I understand. That's why I opted to not go with 37's and stayed at 315s (which cost substantially less than 35's and are nearly the same size). I tell people all the time to stick with 33's because it's easier, and the ground clearance difference is an inch at best.

@quicksendtaco The difference is maybe 0.4" wider (not really much) and probably 0.5 to 0.7" taller (depending on brand). So, you really cannot go wrong with anything in the 295 to 315 range if you have a healthy BCM or relocation kit (I did the relocation). They look very similar across those sizes side by side, and it's roughly 1/4" more ground clearance, which is practically nothing. So, if you like the 295's and they're better cost than 315's, there's no harm in staying with them.

Hey so you convinced me to go with the same lift tire package. My only question is the spare tire. At this size is it small enough to still carry under the truck or is a swing out required?

In my eyes a spare does not need to be a full size a spare, it just needs to get me off the trail and to the nearest tire shop. I will be mounting a 33 inch tire under the bed, that I know will fit and will only be a hair smaller.

I hava a long bed with bilstein 6112 suspension and 285/70R17 ko2’s and planning to get 315/70R17 baja atz, you mentioned that bilstein’s will not work for, can you explain why ?

The 6112s only give you about 2.0 inches of lift and you need 2.5 or 3.0 inches to start. At only 2.0 inches the only way to clear something that big is to cut ur fenders and body a bunch and get a a re-location kit. You can see all the work I had to do just to fit these 295/70/17s on a 3.0 inch lift.

Since the truck gets driven daily on the road I can say that after a few thousand miles they are very quiet and smooth. But with the larger size they do grip the road imperfections a little more. The suspension parts can all be found at www.iconvehicledynamics.com

I will eventually when I have the extra $ set aside and will probably do 35s later for that reason too. I currently am running a tune and that helps a lot I think especially just daily driving I get about 14 mpg around town. I also have a lot of friends on 35s and not re geared it's just a big investment so it takes time. But let's be real it's all expensive haha

I just made the same decision and came to the same conclusion. My main reason to stick with 295s was keeping the spare under the truck as a tall skinny 255 which is close enough to get us home. I don't want a swing out and keeping weight low is always a good idea. Plus regearing isn't cheap

Yeah no gears for me or swing out as well. Keep it simple and still a good daily driver. What is the full spare size you are running? I was going to go 265/75/16 and call it a day just a profile bigger like you said can get you where you need to go.

You say the 295s Mickey Thompson weigh less than the 285s Falken but according to each website the 295 Mickeys are 72lbs and the 285 Falkens are 63.3. Those Mickeys A/Ts are even heavier than the equivalent Falken MTs (72 vs 69)

@@quicksendtaco aww that was a typo. I meant to ask about the offset of your wheels. I run a zero offset and I really like the stance of your Taco. I saw you answered another person saying you run a 1” spacer and that answers it. Who did your body mount chop? I love that angle. We’re in Vegas and we have a great local shop called Rogue Off-road that specializes in custom fabrication. I’d love to show them a pic of yours to see if they can replicate it but I wouldn’t be opposed to rolling out to your neck of the woods to get it done either.

They are pretty good but you can definitely feel the road more than my older 33s even if they were MTs if that makes sense. Small imperfections give more feed back into the steering wheel than before. But they are very quiet and don’t really jeopardize any performance from what I can tell so far. It’s been about seven months.

Hi Zac, the wheels are a zero offset with a 4.75 inch backspace without the spacers. -30 is the final offset.

Depending on which brand you go with if they are light and large like these, the main benefit is clearance and over all approach and departure angle. That can definitely vary depending on tire size and compound you go with because those factors will affect rubbing and or MPG.

I agree with a lot of what your saying, I’ve also been debating the whole going 35s decision. I have a long bed Tacoma that I commute about 80 miles 2-4 times a week on 285/75r17 Yokohama mud terrains and they are heavy but not as heavy as a 35 MT could be. Now I’ve done research and I’m deciding between Nitto Recon grappler AT in a 35/12.5 which weighs only 1 pound heavier than the tires I have now of a Nitto ridge grappler 35/11.5r17 which is 2 pounds heavier than what I have now. All of these which are lighter than the mickeys you have. Could you possibly help me decide between the 2 I’m looking at? Please and thank you.

Hey there! I took a look because what you said shocked me haha those that you listed are in fact even lighter than the 34x12.0 Mickey Thompson Baja Boss! Nice find. I personally would go with the Ridge Grappler it is known to be an amazing tire all around. Weight aside you will have to consider the rolling surface and possible need for a re-gear to get close to the same MPG. I am running an OTT Tune as well for my 34s I didn't mention that in the video.

@@quicksendtaco I’ve pretty much done 90% of the work for 35s, body mount chop, pinch weld, fender cut on the front wheel wells, 5.29 regear, and total chaos spindle gussets and cam tabs. Just can’t decide if I want the wider recon grapplers or the 1” narrower ridge grapplers. Sounds dumb but I can’t pick which one I feel like is the best to go with.

I run 275/75/16 BFG KO2 on a 1997 Land Cruiser with a 2.5 OME lift. Could I go larger, yes, much larger. However it is my daily and I already get roughly 12MPG. eerr, uuhh Smiles per Gallon..Toyota Land Cruiser axles can run 38, no rub, but you will need to re gear. Take into cosideration the axle strength before you add on those massive tires and try spinnin them. I run the Rubicon with this set up no problem as the trail head is 10 minutes from the house and I am at the staging area. Plow through snow hood level high inJanuary, no problem, literally. Also, I pull the jeeps and Broncos running 38, 40 out of the snow and rocks constantly and looked at in amazement. By the way.. Jeep axles are designed only for 33s axle strength wise. What I am trying to say is you do not neccesarly need massive tires. Do they look cool, sure, however I still can get to anywhere others with larger tire get to. just my .02

Couldn't agree more 285/70s or 33s can get you almost anywhere, but man to these trucks look mean once you get bigger tires. So far I'm loving this size.

@@quicksendtaco right on.. I remember back in the day 33s were super large tires.. No one was running 35, 37 and certainly not 40s.. They do look cool however there have been tests and you can UTube it, but taller skinier tires actually have a wider contact once aired down.. science is cool.. I guess if you had a rig specific to running trails and that was it, I can see the bigger tire.. but on a daily. Last year we had 80 FEET of snow cumulative throughout the year, Nov- May.. we literally receive 3, 4, 5, 6 foot dumps over a 3 day period.. 275/75 16 BFGKO2, absolutely no problem. To go to my side job at 11PM, snow removal at a ski resort, lots of times I have first tracks going to work. Side streets here are not a priority and get stacked up quick with 2' -3' an hour. The big tires do look tough though IMHO.. Have a great day.

I did not and probably wont' I get about 13 mpg on average. On my current tank I'm at 14 mpg.

The short answer is no, but the long answer is anything will fit with enough cutting and trimming but it may not be as clean as you want it to be.

Check the video man there is no rubbing anywhere I even zoomed in, sounds like you need to trim and cut more stuff. Also watch some other videos of mine, never rubs. Even if I did and iI was hiding it what does that solve? This video is literally aimed to help people avoid other people who say they don't rub which is why I showed it. Just get a good alignment and manage you wheel offset.

The wheels are 17x8.5 with a zero offset but with the wheel spacer they are effectively a -30 offset.

@@quicksendtaco ok thanks. I’m running 17x9 with a -38 offset I want to move up from a 285/70/17 to 295’s because I feel it’d be too much work to get the 35 inch tire to fit hopefully when I do decide to go to 295 I won’t have to cut too much I already have a CMC but might have to do the viper cut.

@@Mikeynalus With a 17x9 -38 even if you went to this tire and size for example I think you may need to do quite a bit more trimming and cutting than I did but that is totally doable and will look super mean!

@@alexsua672 There is more to it than that but yes I have a 30mm spacer so the wheel is effectively a -30 offset. The issue without the spacer was the tire contacting the UCA, not necessarily any other rubbing on the bumper or CMC.

In this video I have a 3 inch lift in front and a 3.5 in the rear. I had 285/70/17 before and for these tires specifically even with the cutting and trimming I am not sure I'd clear these tires specifically but it can be done just need to get the hammer and saw out haha
