Nextcloud is great, I run my own instance, but one of my biggest gripes is that it's so very difficult to migrate or backup and restore. It's actually easier to just put a new instance on a new URL, setup new user accounts, and let it resync all my data. And if you're using the snap install, migration is even more difficult.

They have a very nice password manager app that also has a firefox extension and android client. I use this app the most, the app can also create a random password for you, it can also detect if the set password has pwned. They have a ton of really decent apps. Nextcloud is just really good.

If you came here wondering how to share local directories, then you just have to install the External Storage app, then add an external storage with type "Local". Confusing, I know, but it works like a charm and far outperforms using SMB of AFP 😊

So... how hard would it be to mirror an entire local instance of Nextcloud to one that's hosted by Linode? I guess it while be easier to just backup the database.. The thing is, I finally convinced a few family members to get off the iCloud sauce and let me host them on my Nextcloud but I still want them to be able to get their files if my power goes out or something.

I have setup and used nextcloud as password sharing platform in a small company before. I did that with Passwords or Passman app don't remember now. For storage solution not sure what you are targeting at but if nextcloud can have a system to generate api addresses similar to other cloud blob storage solutions that would be great.

It would be interesting to see what the differences are between this and OwnCloud.
@ivailogeimara
@ivailogeimara 3 жыл бұрын
Basically in 2016 the founder of ownCloud left the company (and a lot of the original devs) and forked ownCloud into NextCloud because he wasn't happy with where the project was going ("The community was unhappy, the company was not in a good shape and other factors", ownCloud was not as community based as he wanted). The both projects are still going but NextCloud has a lot more development going into it because that's where the community is. ownCloud has Community and paid Enterprise version. NextCloud has pretty much only 1 version. NextCloud has more features currently (compared to the paid version of ownCloud). From what I read they have better security features. Besically NextCloud is the more developed solution and where the community is and I see no reason to use ownCloud.
@Maisonier
@Maisonier 3 жыл бұрын
@@ivailogeimara What are the best practices for security, speed and reliability for Nextcloud? 1. Use a docker image direct on Windows or Ubuntu? 2. Use a VM of Ubuntu with pre-installed Nextcloud on Windows? 3. Use Freenas, Unraid or Proxmox to virtualize Linux and install a docker image on that virtual machine? And about the hardware? use a dedicated raid 1 for the installation of that virtual machine? and then another SSD to the DATA of Nextcloud? and what about Collabora??
@ivailogeimara
@ivailogeimara 3 жыл бұрын
@@Maisonier Now for maximum security you probably would want to run NextCloud on separate Debian/CentOS VM on Linux host. This is inefficient as far as RAM and other system resources go and you have to maintain another distro (updating primarily) but it's the most secure. TBH I run it in as docker container in a Debian VM on CentOS host in which VM I run a few other docker containers because it's secure enough for me and I can share resources (mainly ram) with other apps. As far as performance goes, how fast do you really need it to be. It's cloud service like Google Drive. I normally access it when I'm not at home so the network connectivity is not Gigabit or not even 100Mbps. So running inside VM inside docker while files are stored on a NFSv4 share on mechanical drive is fine for me. Probably running it on directly attached SSD or using iSCSI will be faster but I'm bottle-necked by the internet speed outside my home so w/e. If you want to transfer files really fast I'd probably go for network share or iSCSI alone rather than cloud storage and that would work only on the local network.

Would it be secure if I installed freenas, centos Ubuntu server or open media vault and self hosted nextcloud ? Seems a bit pricey. Or would own cloud be better. And does anyone know anything about nitro share?
@sneakeyboard8305
@sneakeyboard8305 3 жыл бұрын
Haven't used nitro share but I do know that renting servers is expensive. For what you get, the price is fair so don't be discouraged if you can afford it. Every solution has some compromises, so you'll have to decide depending on what your needs are and whether the trade-off is viable for your project. The simplicity Linode offers is having everything ready in a few clicks; this includes cross-platform access as well as ease of use with their control panel. This is something that software like freenas/truenas has trouble implementing. Check out their previous video commenting on the one click feature that's not quite as polished as the one mentioned here. Self hosting is a great option though. Running a home server is more affordable but the compromise is that you're fiddling with your home network and ISPs don't always provide good hardware. Port forwarding can be tricky to setup with some of their routers/modems. I think storage is the most expensive add-on for these services. I'm sure the alternative isn't something you're interested in either (those "free options) since the whole point of this video is to avoid them.

If anyone is planning on using this with the android app; don't. It's the most buggy piece of software that has ever been created. Nothing works, it throws more exceptions than you can count, and it draws so much battery that you might as well bring a 10 mile extension cord with you wherever you go, because your phone won't last more than 2 hours without one.

Lol you may want to look at it another way if you have the need to access your files from someplace other than your computer. Nextcloud is safer than a service cloud for sure. Yes you can get "hacked" but there is a lot less likelihood that a hacker is going to spend the time to hack into a nobodys computer. They are going to spend their time hacking into something that has a better "return vs risk" like google drive. Yes you have to actually do things if you went this route to better protect yourself but that's life. Think of it this way.. You need to go shopping so you need to go to the store but ... wait if you go to the store you could be "hacked" (a car accident/mugged/get attacked by a bear/struck by lightening or anything) so you have to make a choice .. starve or take a chance and do everything you can to be able to do it as safely as possible.
