Should not the arm (humerus) be parallel with the ground?

Ten, Hut, Yo! Lower arm is supposed to be exactly parallel to the deck, His wasn't bad but not exact. Hand to be tilted down at a 45 degree angle. Again, his not "too" bad. Finally, I didn't like the space between his thumb and hand. Keep it tight, RECRUIT! From a Marine that finished boot camp over 40 years ago, but you NEVER forget this sh t! (-:

I’m in Afjrotc and when I turned around to salute the inspecting officer their assistant laughed at my salute... Even after I worked hard to get it right. (I am an As100 and flight commander so it was my first time) So hopefully this helps me get it right. I think I need to do it all in one motion and get the angle better.

The tip of your fingers should come straight up the gig line, not an outward motion as demonstrated. Tip of right middle finger barely touches right temple, don't try to position it on visor of headgear. If you are wearing helmet, temple is blocked, barely touch helmet were temple is. You will have plenty of practice at Basic Training.

What's the story with saluting with the fingers pointing to the head, back of the hand facing more or less foreward, and elbow foreward. Is this some kind of disrespect? I've seen it on television and some, but not most, ROTC cadets.

I think that a salute should go back to original intension. The salute comes from medieval knights before a joust lifting their visor from the chin to reveal their eyes before a contest. That's not how I was taught to salute in basic. This GI looks like a helicopter spinning up - A big No-No. Raising of the hand should NOT go outward but instead, follow a line up and close to the middle of the chest until the index finger reaches the end of the brow. The hand should be turned slightly inwards to show the top of the fingers. If you follow this advice, the geometry of your arm will naturally and always be correct when holding the salute. When Order Arms, the tips of the fingers and the hand should again and quickly follow the line down the middle of the chest until they reach the side of the body. And for heaven's sake, stand up tall and straight, snapping to attention if need be and never lose eye contact. Those two are a demonstration of respect rather than a required courtesy. You want your salute to look natural and not robotic. An honest and meaningful salute will go a long way towards winning the respect of your superiors. If someone worthy of a salute is passing you by, turn perpendicular the their direction of travel ,snap to attention and render a salute as they pass by, about five paces before they pass and again maintaining eye contact. This will give them time to return your salute. A "Good Day, Sir" is often another courtesy unless the one you are saluting is preoccupied, such as talking to another or reading something; then it is advisable to maintain a silence when they pass. Order Arms if they return the salute and in unison as they drop their hand. If no return salute is rendered, hold either for 15 seconds, or until they have passed, or if they stop to talk with you. Be sure to snap to attention and salute once again as they return to their prior undertaking. I don't know how a proper salute is taught now and i suspect it is no different than what I was taught during the Vietnam era. And Yes, I am a Vietnam Veteran. Hope this helps
